Janice (jamasc) | 60507 comments Museum 12. The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Cairo

1. Location - Cairo, Egypt
Task: Read a book set in Egypt.

2. About - The building lay on the bank of the Nile River, and in 1878 it suffered significant damage in a flood of the Nile River.
Task: Read a book in which a river plays a significant role.

3. Collection - Gold Mask of Tutankhamun - 11 kgs of solid gold

Cherie (crobins0) | 21509 comments If you need a book that features a river for task 2 - About,
I definitely recommend Once Upon a River.
Another option is Three Men in a Boat.

Ayacchi | 1729 comments Anyone has read The Wind in the Willows? Does it fit task 2?

I am also curious about this one - I found it on a a list of books with rivers and would like to read it for this prompt, but I haven't read it since I was a kid so I don't know

Viji | 1586 comments Would Mara, Daughter of the Nile by Eloise Jarvis McGraw fit the task:
Read a book in which a river plays a significant role.

Thanks.

There's nothing in the book blurb that indicates that the river is significant. This might be one that you would need to read to make that determination. So, unless someone has read it and can confirm, I'll have to say no.

I stole this from a review. "The Wind in the Willows book is a classic tale of animals and river life and friendship."

I have it marked as read, but I honestly do not know if I actually read it as a kid or not. I kind of know who the characters are and some parts of the story, but like in a dream.

I guess there's only one way to know. Since it's a short book, I decided to give it a try. It can still fit other task in case it can't fit here

Cherie (crobins0) | 21509 comments If we had a task for "some furry friends and a toad", I would give it a go myself, Aya. ;o)

I guess if it does not apply for "the river", you might be able to make one of the interactive tasks fit the book. I can think of all kinds of crazy things to come up with. I actually made up a couple of tasks to fit books that I already owned - I just had to find a picture to fit with something on the cover.

message 11: by Ayacchi (new)

Ayacchi | 1729 comments It fits task "wind/windmill/mill" also an interactive task about animal. If only I haven't read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, it'd be a great book. But I've have a back up for river task 💪

message 12: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60507 comments If you can find a collection piece with an animal on it, your task could be "a book written from an animal's POV".

Thanks, Janice. I'll put some detail on it :)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 2330 comments I am struggling to find a link to this museum I put the museums name and get all egyptian museums do you have a link Janice to the actual museum and its collections. I have to say you are so clever with your challenges but this one is driving me nuts

When I wrote the challenge, the Veranda 40 Best Museums website contained a link, but it no longer does. According to Wikipedia, the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities is more commonly called The Egyptian Museum and the link is here.

This was one one of my favourites growing up. The river does play a significant role

message 18: by Emma R. (new)

Emma R. | 206 comments I'm wondering if River Monsters: True Stories of the Ones that Didn't Get Away by Jeremy Wade could count for "Read a book in which a river plays a significant role"? The book is all about fishing and rivers play significant roles in this memoir

It sounds like it will work.

message 20: by Grainne (new)

Grainne | 1418 comments I am a bit stuck on a book for this interactive challenge. I thought of basing it on the Sarcophagus of Kawit. https://egymonuments.gov.eg/en/collec...

I was wondering about reading a book about a queen who is buried during her husband's reign
Bring Up the Bodies (Thomas Cromwell #2) by Hilary Mantel

Or a book set at the site of an archaeological dig
Lion in the Valley (Amelia Peabody, #4) by Elizabeth Peters

or another book set in Egypt. Can I use location again?

While there are duplicates of tasks throughout the challenge, I would hesitate to duplicate it within the museum itself. You have two perfectly good tasks that I don't think you need to look any further.

message 22: by Grainne (new)

Grainne | 1418 comments Thank you Janice. I wasn't sure so I thought it best to ask.

message 23: by Jocelyn (new)

Jocelyn (jocelyn91) The Kingdom of Copper by S.A. Chakraborty

The first task being set in Egypt. Does an alternate magical Egypt count?

Yes.

message 25: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 3039 comments Would you think that Ink and Bone is set enough in Alexandria, Egypt to count for task Location?

message 26: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21509 comments I was wondering the same thing, Jenn. I think it was.

message 27: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60507 comments I see the book page says it's set in London and Alexandria. In order for it to qualify, it needs to be set there about 50%.
