Peggy (pebbles84) | 15795 comments I'm currently reading Once Upon a River, and one of the characters is a photographer. He hasn't been in the story all that much so far, but he is significant.

I also found The Lotus Eaters on my TBR, which is about a combat photographer in the Vietnamese war.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15795 comments I was looking for books set in California and came across The Kitchen God's Wife and The Bonesetter's Daughter. From the blurb, they seem to be partly set in China, and partly in California. Can anyone confirm whether the California part is over 50%?

Should there be a depiction of a photography as in One of Us Is Next, or do you mean the cover should be a photography in contrast with an illustration or drawing as in I Am the Messenger?

One of Us Is Next (One of Us Is Lying, #2) by Karen M. McManus I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak

It's been so many years since I've read them that I don't recall. It seems to me Bonesetters Daughter was set mostly in China, but I could be mistaken.

I want a depiction of a photograph. One of Us is Next is exactly what I mean. The other book, I am the Messenger, is not.

No problem that book qualifies for lots of tasks every year yet I still haven't read it. I own The Haunting of L The Haunting of L by Howard Norman so I might re-try it. It was a dnf a few years ago.

I found this one too, but I put it under the Museum 40 task for "postcard" or "letter" in the title. Letters Never Sent by Sandra Moran

No! Really? I just looked at his self portraits. Strange man...
I only remember his name as associated with the Campbell Soup can pictures. I do not think I knew that he had died. I had another Andy pictured for his name, but I am not sure who he is now. A much older guy though. hmmm

I have three books lined up for this museum, I might have to find something to link with his name/picture and a book to go with it. - Actually, I never finished the Andy/Don task for card 12 on my trivia challenge. I guess I better read Moon River and Me: A Memoir in honor of "Andy"

That is a hard one, Aya. I had way too many faces to choose from. I am reading a biography of John Wayne. He was my hero.

You might want to look up old movies or TV shows from the 60s. Or consider musicians/singers from the same time.

Ikr, some people have too many and some are just like me, lol. I don't follow any celebrity around that time either local or international so it's really hard. But thanks for giving me a starting point! I'll gopher more, and if I still can't find anything interesting, I'll pass it. My choices for task 1 & 2 can also fit other museums. Pst, it's not like I can do badge 3 anyway ; )

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15795 comments It's the other way around for me Aya. I have owned Love, Janis for years and she's one of my favourite singers, but for some reason I never pick up the book. This museum/task is perfect to finally read it! But I have difficulties with task 1 (I have 2 books that might fit but am not sure if enough of it is set in California; still, this task shouldn't be too hard) and 2 (actually, I just realize I did find a book for task 2).

I found task 2 accidentally, when I read Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: A Therapist, Her Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed's blurb. The page says it sets in California. And I just checked, your book (?) The Circle by Dave Eggers also sets there.

message 31: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15795 comments Thanks aya! I abandoned The Circle as I really didn't like it, so I'm not even going to try that one again ;-) I should probably just look a little better, there must be tons of books set in California.

Ayacchi | 1729 comments You can start here, though I'm not really sure we'll find what we want.

Or here. It's Los Angeles, California.

message 33: by Peggy (last edited Dec 16, 2020 02:19AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15795 comments Thank you Aya! That is very helpful. I already see a couple I have on my wishlist on the first pages of both lists. I could always use it as an excuse to buy a new book :)

There are many pages though so I'm hopeful I'll come across something I own.

I wish it was possible to sort lists, so that you can see all your books that you have rated or shelved in a certain way together.

Kristie | 19699 comments Ayacchi wrote: "I've no clue about task 3 so if anyone have a recommendation I'll be grateful!"

I'm thinking about reading one of the following if I manage to get to this museum:
Love, Lucy - Lucille Ball
In Pieces - Sally Field
Dutch Girl: Audrey Hepburn and World War II - Audrey Hepburn

A couple other possibilities pending approval:

Becoming Dr. Seuss: Theodor Geisel and the Making of an American Imagination - Dr. Seuss - Would an author be considered a celebrity? He wrote some of his most famous books in the 50s and was popular in the 60s and beyond, even won a couple of awards late 50s early 60s.

The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe - Marilyn Monroe- She was very popular in the early 60s, but died in August of 1962, so maybe not enough? Though she did remain popular even after her death.

message 35: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Dec 16, 2020 07:38AM) (new)

Kristie | 19699 comments Oh, another great option might be Keep Moving: And Other Truths About Living Well Longer by Dick Van Dyke. I didn't immediately think of it because I'm planning to use it for the man with a hat task, but it works here too.

Edit - Actually, Janice, it is tagged as biography/memoir, but reading the blurb sounds more like self-help. I'm not sure how memoir-ish it will be. Does it still work?

message 36: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19699 comments Aya - This page might help. It lists the biggest movie stars from 1960-1969. If you find someone that is interesting to you, you could plug their name into Goodreads and probably find something that way.

message 37: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60695 comments Good job on all the sleuthing, Kristie! Marilyn Monroe would work. If it's tagged as memoir on the main book page, I'll accept it.

I will be reading No One Here Gets Out Alive which is a biography about Jim Morrison.

Year of the Monkey
Year of the Monkey by Patti Smith

I was also thinking of I Am Spock for my 60s personality: Leonard Nimoy

Cherie (crobins0) | 21509 comments I read Dick Van Dyke's book My Lucky Life in and Out of Show Business and thought it was pretty good. I have read several memoirs and enjoyed most of them. Viji | 1600 comments Task: Read a memoir/biography of a celebrity who was popular in the 1960's

By any chance, would The Sound of Music by Julia Antopol Hirsch work for this task? This is the only non-fiction book set in 1960 I have coming under Biography category.

Some excerpts from the synopsis -

Through exclusive in-depth interviews with cast and crew, stills from the movie's most memorable scenes, snapshots from personal scrapbooks, and papers from the Fox Studios archives, Julia Hirsch re-crates the magic that is "The Sound of Music." Julie Andrews recounts some of her more humorous memories of the filming, from her "first kiss" with Christopher Plummer, when neither of them could stop laughing, to rushing up the mountain for the famous opening scene only to be continually knocked down by the downdraft from the cameraman's helicopter.

... But most of all, Hirsch captures the extraordinary camaraderie shared by everyone involved, a group whose friendships would last a lifetime. This engaging narrative is both an insider's guide to, and a delightful celebration of, a film that truly is "the happiest sound in all the world.

If this would not work, book suggestions or links for this task would be a great help.

I think this is very obvious. The movie was wildly popular in the 60's as was Julie Andrews. I don't think you need a ruling on this.

As it mentiond only the movie in the title, I was not sure though the synopsis referred to the interviews with the stars and crew of the movie. Hence, I thought of getting it cleared before reading the book.

Thanks, Janice.

Task: Read a book in which a significant character is a photographer, or there is depiction of a photograph on the cover. (The cover cannot be the photograph.)

Would The Code of the Woosters (Jeeves, #7) by P.G. Wodehouse work for this task? I am not able to make out if it is a photograph or not. We used to have such heavily framed photographs in our houses.
Help needed.

Thanks.
