Museum 17: Musée D'Orsay in Paris

1 Location - Paris, France
Task: Read a book set in Paris.

2. About - The museum was once a railway station.
Task: Read a book with a train on the cover.

3. Collection - Emile Galle - Hand With Seaweed and Shells.
(view spoiler)
Task: Read a book about people who's work is derived from the sea.

4. Interactive item - based on the Musée D'Orsay in Paris.
Task: Your choice based on your selection from the collection. Required - link to the picture and explain connection.

message 2: by Marie Claude (new)

Marie Claude (mariecg2001) | 1030 comments I would like a precision on Task 3: Read a book about people who's work is derived from the sea.

How "close" from the sea should the work should be. For example, would a book set in a beach vacation village work? In the ones I think about, the main characters are hotel and store operators whose business depend vastly from the tourists who come for the beach...
Another possibility, would operating a lighthouse work?

message 3: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15795 comments I immediately had to think of The Island of Sea Women

message 4: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Nov 29, 2020 10:36AM) (new)

Kristie | 20298 comments I have that one listed too, Peggy. It was the first one that came to mind. I'm not really sure I want to read it though.

I had a similar question to Marie Claude. I was thinking of The Light Between Oceans. I suppose a lighthouse worker's work derives from the sea, since if there was no sea there would be no need for lighthouses. However, I wasn't sure if Janice only meant fishermen or sailers and the like.

I'm not so sure about hotels & stores, since those are still needed elsewhere. Unless maybe they sell seashell necklaces or something like that?

Oh, I read a book about a seashore artist before... using sea glass and the like to create art. She wasn't "the" main character, but she was a main character. I bet that would work. Now to remember the name of the book... edit: I think the book was The Forever Summer. It is another character though, none of the women in the blurb. It is set at a beach side B&B.... so maybe, maybe not.

Of course, leaving the final decision up to Janice. :)

message 5: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15795 comments Why are you not sure about reading it Kristie?

Kristie | 20298 comments Peggy wrote: "Why are you not sure about reading it Kristie?"

I'm just not really interested in it. My real life book club read it and I skipped it. They all seemed to really like it, but it just doesn't tempt me for some reason. It is the one I currently have listed for that task though.

message 7: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Nov 29, 2020 10:48AM) (new)

Kristie | 20298 comments I also tend not to like pirate books or books set at sea that involve battles. I could read something about fishing or sailing or some other sea-related job though.

Oh... there are always marine biologists, conservationists, and the like. Or something about water security - harbormaster or Coast Guard or Marines.

message 8: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 20298 comments Could we go with something nonfiction, such as Beneath the Surface: Killer Whales, SeaWorld, and the Truth Beyond Blackfish? Or is that too loose of a connection? I'm thinking they depend on the sea for the animals, but maybe you'd prefer someone working more directly in/with the sea.

There are a lot of nonfiction books about whales, dolphins, octopi, etc. Some are not in captivity. If it's written about research with the animals maybe?

Sorry to make this complicated for you, Janice. I seem to have gotten hung up. (Moving on to another task...)

message 9: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 62354 comments I was thinking of occupations/businesses like sailors, cruise lines, shipping, fishing, fish canneries, etc. The examples Kristie and Peggy have used would all fit.

But, tourism because people are coming to the beach? No.

Amanda | 1881 comments For task 2 - "train on cover", will either of these books work?
The Institute by Stephen King Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline

For task 3 - "work derived from the sea", would this work? It's about the musicians on the Titanic.

Task 2 - The Institute works, but Orphan Train doesn't. Because of the title, you assume it's a train, but it's not clearly identified as such.

Task 3 - That's a tough one. They were working on an ocean liner, but it's work that could have been done elsewhere. If it was a story about the captain or the engineers, it would be different. It's very similar to the question about hotels being by the sea. So, I'm going to say no.

Ayacchi | 1729 comments I have a similar book background like Peggy's, The Mermaid from Jeju. But I don't know if there'll be actual sea diving or if it has an important part in the book

It sounds like it would work. Based on the book blurb, she's a sea diver.

The requirement is "about people who's work is derived by the sea". It doesn't require that the activity of their work be carried out throughout the book.

Okay, Janice. Noted!

Janice (jamasc) | 62354 comments Katrisa wrote: "For living derived from the sea can I use The Mermaid?"

I'm having trouble wrapping my head around this one. Her work is that of a circus performer because she's a mermaid? She's a creature from the sea, but she's not really making her living from the sea. I'm going to say no. Sorry.

Viji | 1660 comments 3. Collection -
Task: Read a book about people who's work is derived from the sea.

Would any of the following books work for this task?
1. Seven Letters by J.P. Monninger 2. The Other Half (Door Peninsula Passions, #1) by Katherine Hastings 3. Match Me Perfect by Jessica Ames 4. Black Diamond (Wilds of the Bayou, #2) by Susannah Sandlin 5. The Whiskey Sea by Ann Howard Creel

From the synopsis for these books, I could understand it has fisherman characters/MCs but am not sure which would fit this task.

Thanks.

This first book fits because one of the main characters is a fisherman. If the other books have a similar premise, they would also work.

message 21: by Viji (new)

Viji | 1660 comments Thanks a lot, Janice. Most of these books have fisherman MC. But the 'The Whiskey Sea' has a MC who even turns to being a smuggler. I am just quoting a few lines from the synopsis for ready reference:

"... Frieda Hope is determined to make a better life for herself and her sister, Bea. The girls are taken in by a kindly fisherman named Silver, and Frieda begins to feel at home on the water. When Silver sells his fishing boat to WWI veteran Sam Hicks, thinking Sam would be a fine husband for Frieda, she’s outraged. But Frieda manages to talk Sam into teaching her to repair boat engines ...
...is lured into a money-making team of rumrunners supplying alcohol to New York City speakeasies. Speeding into dangerous waters to transport illegal liquor..."

Could this also be considered for this task? Thanks.

Janice (jamasc) | 62354 comments Jayme wrote: "Hi Janice - for task #2 -train on the cover - will you accept this book? A Burning by Megha Majumdar"

I'm going to say no. It is similar to Amanda's selection (above) but Amanda's choice is more prominent. You see the train immediately. My first reaction to your book was, "There's a train on this cover?" It gets lost in all the activity of the cover. You could use this one for "fire on the cover" (Museum 18, about).

message 29: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1881 comments For task #3 - work derived from the sea. Would Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania work? It's about the sinking of the Lusitania, so it talks about the sailors on the ship and on the U-boat.
