Kristie | 19688 comments Any suggestions for a book with a man wearing a hat on the cover? I found plenty of women, but all my men have issues - too far away to be the focus of the cover, I already read the book, book is too short, not the version I own, etc.

I only found one that works so far. Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith I don't own the correct cover, but my library has it. :) I'm looking for other options in case I'm not in the mood for that one.

If you like Fantasy, I think the Dresden series would work... Am I right Janice?
Here's the first in the series
Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher

Kristie | 19688 comments Marie Claude wrote: "If you like Fantasy, I think the Dresden series would work... Am I right Janice?"

Thank you. That's one of the ones that I've already read, Marie Claude. I thought most of them in the series were too far away. There are a couple closer ones, but I've already read them.

I'm up to Grave Peril (The Dresden Files, #3) by Jim Butcher which you can hardly see the hat. I skipped ahead & already read Dead Beat (The Dresden Files, #7) by Jim Butcher which is, of course, the one with the best hat view. lol

Of course after posting this, I finally started to find more. Janice, can you let me know if these are close or central focused enough for the task? I'll pull out any that don't work from my options.

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith , Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1) by Cassandra Clare , The Lost Wife by Alyson Richman , Babylon's Ark The Incredible Wartime Rescue of the Baghdad Zoo by Lawrence Anthony , The Yard (Scotland Yard's Murder Squad, #1) by Alex Grecian , What Angels Fear (Sebastian St. Cyr, #1) by C.S. Harris , The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells ??

Yes to Abraham Lincoln.
Yes to What Angels Fear
Yes to Invisible Man
Iffy to The Yard & The Lost Wife, especially since you have better options

Thanks, Janice. I will pull out The Yard, The Lost Wife, and Babylon's Ark. Should I pull Clockwork Angel too? He's sort of tipping his hat.

Sorry about the rabbit hole. I think I've been at it too long today. I only found one that worked after looking at 800 book covers in my TBR and google wasn't very helpful with this one. After I posted I found a few hatted men in the next couple of hundred books. Sometimes having an obnoxious TBR is helpful, sometimes not so much.

Ok, I've been researching art and gophering books all day. That is the second spiral I've gone down, so I think it is time to move on to doing something else. lol

Yes, Clockwork Angel was a no for me.

Tell me about it. I found a few rabbit holes when I was creating the challenge.

Kristie | 19688 comments No problem, I'll get rid of that one too. Thanks again for your patience and help with all these questions!

The second one is better. The first is hard because the hats get washed out.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15795 comments Haha, I can't read a whole book in French unfortunately ;-)

The white may be a bit washed out because it's always a bit small on GR, but I have the paperback and they're clearly visible there and stand out more from the background. Is that okay?

He's wearing a hat? I can't tell because it's not in focus. So no. Sorry. I seem to have it in for that book even though I really enjoyed it.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21509 comments Kristie - most of the Sherlock Holmes books and a lot of the Hercule Poriot books have them wearing hats on the covers. Baseball players wear hats too. 😉

I looked at the Hercule Poirot books! I thought they would have hats, but none of the ones available to me did. I did not think of Sherlock. 🤦🏼‍♀️ How could I not think of Sherlock?? lol

The baseball cap is small, not prominent nor the focus of the cover. I would read it for the romance task.

message 33: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 3052 comments That's kind of what I figured when I started it, but I had to ask lol Romance it is :)

message 34: by Hobbit_Marco (new)

Hobbit_Marco I am also gonna use a Dresden book (Death Masks) for the hat prompt.

Another question. If I use this for the interactive task:
https://www.museodelprado.es/en/the-c...

It's a triptych. Can I use that as justification for the task: "Read a book part of a trilogy" ?

Yes, that would.

I will be starting Triptych in the next couple of days. Coincidence.

Hobbit_Marco Thanks. Haha, funny coincidence. I didn't even knew that word in english till yesterday.

I'll accept it. He could be the invisible man and all you see is his clothing. Well, there is an ear visible.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19271 comments Rethinking this one. For the man wearing a hat, do you guys think these two guys wearing turbans in the bottom corner would count?

The Railway The Railway by Hamid Ismailov

message 43: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19688 comments Oh, I feel like Queen Meanie today. lol Is a turban a hat? I'm not sure that any head covering would be considered a hat. Maybe Janice will pop in and override me, but I feel like it needs to be an actual hat.

message 44: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19271 comments I am not being argumentative at all, it's another I have to read no matter the answer. But you did lead me down a rabbit hole of the existential question: "what is a hat?"

That one has plagued generations for centuries. What is the meaning of life? Is there life after death? What is a hat?

Wiki says: "A hat is a head covering which is worn for various reasons, including protection against weather conditions, ceremonial reasons such as university graduation, religious reasons, safety, or as a fashion accessory." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hat

Not sure what the definition is that Janice is going with. I can hang out on this one until she has time. Not like I'm running out of things to read lol

message 45: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19688 comments Hahaha, well using that definition I think it might fit. I guess we will have to let Janice have the final say. I'm pretty sure I've had this discussion before for a task, but I don't remember the outcome.

message 46: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Apr 11, 2021 07:50AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19271 comments Me too! And I can't remember either.

I did laugh though. I mentioned this to Lexx, and his interruption was "What is a hat?!?".

Either this is a deep philosophical question for the ages, or we are really showing that 17 years together has blended us into the same person...

message 47: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19688 comments lol!!! Maybe a bit of both!

message 48: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60637 comments Hahaha! This group really does dive deep into the existential side of things? What is a celebrity, what is a vessel containing water, what is jewelry, what is a hat?

I have ruled out things like crowns as being a hat because it's more ceremonial and purposeful. You don't just walk out the door and put a crown on. And turbans seem to me to be similar. That takes me to a nun's habit. I would classify a turban in the same category - a religious purposeful attire.

When I wrote the task, I was thinking more of the casual common hat that you park on you head when you walk out the door.

What do you think?

message 49: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19271 comments I think that's fair. I'm sure it can fit somewhere this year. I'm more annoyed the book called The Railway doesn't have a train on the cover.

message 50: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15795 comments Janice, is this enough 'man with a hat' for the collection task?
