I just added The Tailor of Gloucester to my 2021 Short Classics Challenge! I'll switch it out with something else and read it this month. I have my daughter's small copy.
Just finished The Tailor of Gloucester. Yes, Rosemarie, it's a wonderful story. I read many Beatrix Potter books to my daughter years ago but don't think I've actually read this one. It's fun to look at Potter's drawings--they have such detail.
I'll plan to reread the Tailor of Gloucester with my daughter (6) this month. We have an illustrated Tales of Beatrix Potter as well as the audiobook. In case anyone is interested, I highly recommend the audiobook (2012 with multiple narrators) as it is really well done. If I have time I may try to squeeze in The King of the Golden River.
We read it for bedtime tonight as a family by the fire. It was perfect! I had forgotten that the story took place at Christmastime until I came across this thread.
'The King of the Golden River' is a deft little fairy tale. Very elemental. Fire and earth and water and wind and ice all make important contributions. I didn’t know Ruskin wrote this kind of thing. There are some fun surprises in it. A pleasure.
I'm glad you enjoyed them, John.
I have just reread The Tailor of Gloucester-and loved it just as much as ever. The language flows, the illustrations are lovely and the story is heart-warming.
Just what we need this year!

The Tailor of Gloucester by Beatrix Potter is a wonderful Christmas story. You can read other of her stories as well, of course.
The King of the Golden River by John Ruskin is a fairy tale with a good story and a good message too.
Happy reading!
