Nikki | 663 comments This is a book that I genuinely thought I’d read – some elements of the plot were familiar to me, and I have strong mental images of at least two film versions of Miss Haversham – but it turns out I never had. In fact, apart from reading David Copperfield as a child because our family was watching a BBC adaptation together, I’m not sure whether I’ve actually read anything by Dickens. (I suppose that if I wanted to feel smug about reading a classic, I’d choose something more pretentious, and for pure pleasure, I’d normally pick up something less Victorian.) I really enjoyed this though: it was like revisiting my nine-year-old self’s experience of being captivated by David Copperfield, with sharp observations about human failings and the misery they cause mixed in with all the melodrama, sentimentality and ludicrously named caricatures.

Karin | 9355 comments Dickens is a great author. I haven't read nearly all of them, but in the past few years have greatly increased the number. I read this while growing up but haven't reread it. I don't like them all equally as well, of course.
