NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11281 comments I read the first section of this book several times over the years, and I always stalled out before case #2 was introduced. I finally took the time for this book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think this was the exact time I needed to read this book. The main character is a detective, but this is not a generic mystery by any means. It reads more like a novel with many interesting and complex characters. I also saw the PBS series, which is good. I far preferred the book because it gets inside the heads of the characters. I know that this author isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I really like her and I'm going to read more of her books next year.

Nikki | 663 comments I love her! Glad you enjoyed this. Sometimes it does just need to be the right moment - I'm currently experiencing something similar with The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet which I've started and set aside at least twice before, but am loving this time around, even though I still keep pausing it to read other things!

Shipping News is another one like that. I kept reading other books in between sections. Parts of it are moving and beautiful but some of the sections (or characters) just put me to sleep (literally).
