Janice (jamasc) | 61992 comments And your flood book we were talking about fits! Not sure if it's climate disaster or natural disaster. Or both, maybe.

message 9: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21509 comments Yes, I already have it slotted into my spreadsheet. I don’t think it was a climate disaster. I just remember that the dam breaks, but I don’t know why. I WILL find out this year though!

I cracked up at the list of Kick-Ass Military Science Fiction books! Of course I have already read the Old Man’s War books (I’m reading the last one now), but I had several other titles on my TBR list to pick from.

I am having fun setting up my spreadsheet and looking at the tasks. You are amazing! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

message 10: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21509 comments I don’t think I got to the museum task in my challenge for 2020. I will have to check out the book and see if I can fit it in somewhere.

message 11: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 61992 comments I'm glad you're having fun. You'll have to link your spreadsheet. :)

message 12: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21509 comments I’m still having trouble figuring out how to link things like that, Janice. I think it is the security settings and the firewall in my work laptop.

It is not so much a spreadsheet as it is a Word document that I copied and pasted all of the tasks into, one museum per page. The active links are lost but I can always get on-line to check them. I add the book titles under each task and color code them for what I own and if it is a text book or ebook or audiobook. When I can, I will look up the titles on my library website and note if they have them, and in what format. I am still gophering for titles.

message 13: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 61992 comments At the top right hand corner of either a Word or Excell page, there's a link called "Share". Click on it, remove the check mark from "anyone with link can edit", then click on "Copy Link". Then you can either post your link as it, or hide it under an a href=" html coding.

message 14: by Cherie (last edited Dec 29, 2020 06:01PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21509 comments I don't know. I have filled all of the tasks on my spread sheet with book titles for all of the museums and enough interactive tasks to get me through the first 4 to 6 museums. I have 30 hard copies and paperbacks lined up on my real life book shelves to read. I have 32 books on my Nook e-reader chosen, and I have no idea what I museum task I want to do first. I feel like I am under water trying to swim up and all I can do is look up at how far the surface is away. It has been a strange last couple of weeks. I have been getting a Sherlock Holmes fix, which has kept me happy reading, but I do not want to DO anything.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21509 comments Janice - I know you said we can read books in any order.
For the reporting, do we keep saying Badge 1, book X, until we have all 16 books completed to apply for badge 1, and then move all of them over to Badge 2, book X, etc. So, potentially, I could report 24 books for Badge 1 before I get all 16 needed for the first four museums completed.

I have all 16 books planned for the first badge, but I need to read a book from another museum before I can read one of the ones for my first four museums, because they are series books. Are you setting up a tracking sheet for all of us, like you did last year?

Too funny - I am looking at my spread sheet. I have a book chosen for the Interactive task on museum 8 that says "create a task to use this book".

hahaha (but it is a good one)!
I suspect that it is looking for my password for my log-in behind the Intel firewall and I don't think I can give you that. ;o)
The spreadsheet is not password protected.
I may have to copy it to my gmail account.

message 23: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21509 comments I have been trying to figure out how I am going to tackle the challenge this year. I read all over the place last year and kicked off so many of my owned books. I want to read my books first, but they do not all line up to museums that I can tick off of the list. I also had an issue last year, with how I could see what books needed to be read without booting my laptop and opening my spread sheet. I think the Goodreads folks have limited the mobile apps to what can be seen in messages. If there is a bookcover listed or a picture shown in the message in the thread, I cannot see the text content below. I want to be able to see my list of books to pick which one to read next, from my iPod mobile app. So, I am going to test it with a few lists.

message 24: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4668 comments I know what you mean about being all over the place when it came to deciding which book to read next. Last year I had a bit done on one card, a bit more on another but nothing that lead to completion in a logical way. This year has to be more logical. I have a spreadsheet that I play with, rearranging, moving books to a better spot. Once I had 4 museums set, they became the ones I'm starting with and I plan to "not deviate". The problem was often that the books wouldn't be available when I wanted to read them. So I also joined Kindle Unlimited (I found over 100 that were on my tbr so it became worth it) and I'm using those -- they're always available.

message 25: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1547 comments Yes, it's difficult to know - I had good intentions of not deviating last year, but it all comes undone when a book becomes available at the library, and it just HAS to be read whether it fits a task or not. Thankfully Janice allows us to read out of order, so we can read books as they become available. This year, I have decided to "go with the flow", having books earmarked for tasks, but also being flexible with reading books for no other reason but for enjoyment... and to read some books that have been on my TBR for a looong time. And Cherie, I also find the app very limiting.

message 26: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21509 comments I completed the list of all of the books that I own, and I can see them all on my iPod. That is good!

I am starting with The House of Unexpected Sisters to read and The Thin Man to listen to.

message 27: by Ayacchi (new)

Ayacchi | 1729 comments Cool emojis! I'm curious about the 🔗. Series?

message 28: by Roz (last edited Jan 05, 2021 06:28PM) (new)

Roz | 4668 comments I like your stars better than mine. Big fat ones.

message 29: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21509 comments Ayacchi - series books icon is a chain link (two links joined together). It is from the list of pictures on my iPod. I made a comment in my thread from my iPod in the mobile app, and picked them from the list and posted it in my thread. Then, I edited the comment on the on-line app and copied and pasted (edited) them into my lists.
I thought it “fit” the series thought. I just wanted to track which books belonged to series that I was either currently reading, or in the case of the #1🔗 - this means that they are “the first book in a series that I am not currently reading”. Many of them are ones that I picked up at ebook sale prices from Barnes & Nobel, the Nook distributor.

message 30: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21509 comments Roz - I liked the big fat gold stars too. I saw them on Janice’s reports last year. They are from my iPod (Apple). They look terrible in the on-line view, but really nice on the Apple mobile app.

message 31: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4668 comments I took the liberty of copying and pasting your big fat stars into my thread. Hope you don't mind. They say imitation is the highest form of flattery. 😉

message 32: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21509 comments Roz wrote: "I took the liberty of copying and pasting your big fat stars into my thread. Hope you don't mind. They say imitation is the highest form of flattery. 😉"

No problem. Actually, in my original attempt to respond to you, I had included all of the stars in my iPod app, but the response was lost and ended up on the wrong thread, and did not have all of the content included.

On another note, I cannot figure out where to include my interactive tasks. I did not copy and paste everything into my thread. I have it on my spread sheet, but, when we post the books we read for it, Janice has to look at the content somewhere. I think I will make a separate thread and post them there, with a link to my challenge. I cannot decide.

message 33: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4668 comments Did you save the interactive task pictures to Photobucket? That way you could have 1 (or 2 or more) messages and just have the interactives in them. I included the Interactive task pictures with each museum. Then when I did my first book (an interactive) I could copy and paste the link into the reporting message. I have to say it took me a while to set up the Museums in my thread, and a while to figure out the whole picture-Photobucket thing. But Janice will want to see them.

message 34: by Cherie (last edited Jan 06, 2021 09:41PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21509 comments Roz - I haven't used photobucket in a long, long time. I am not even sure that I have an account. I will have to check.

I have created a few tasks. I decided to use the messages that I originally started and I have redone them today. For the first badge information in message 3, I have added my Interactive tasks and a format for reporting the books to apply for the badge. I have done the same for badge 2 in message 5. Janice said we could use her pictures, and until I figured out a couple more, I did. I have links to my others. Would you see if they work for you? Do they make sense?

Janice - please check the ones that I used the pictures from task 3. Are they okay as is?

I am brain dead from work and updating all of this stuff today. I found a book to go with a picture I found for museum 7 and created the task for it. I have a book that I want to read for the interactive task for museum 8, but I cannot stay on any longer.
I want to finish my monthly challenge book tonight.

I didn't know that emoji is exist (on my keyboard) until I saw yours. And that big star as well 😂

message 36: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4668 comments I checked out the links you have for Museums 1, 7, and 22 and they brought me to the pictures you wanted. The one for the swords (#22) had some other pictures (armor, horse) on the page so I think it was good that you clarified which picture you were referring to. I don't think Janice will have a problem with them.
I know what you mean about Photobucket. I hadn't used it in a couple of years so remembering my password was tricky and then figuring out how to negotiate the site was a pain. I would have been better off using Janice's pictures but I always seem to make things more difficult for myself. If you want to use any of my pictures let me know and I'll send you the links.

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11650 comments Cherie wrote: "Roz - I haven't used photobucket in a long, long time. I am not even sure that I have an account. I will have to check. ..."

I gave up on Photobucket a couple of years ago. If it gives you trouble you may want to try https://imgbb.com.

imgbb uploading is very very easy.

message 38: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Jan 07, 2021 07:24AM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 61992 comments Cherie wrote: "Janice - please check the ones that I used the pictures from task 3. Are they okay as is? ..."

I must be brain dead as well because I'm not sure what you are asking me. Are you asking me to confirm your use of pictures from task 3, and the tasks you assigned to them for your task 4? If so, yes, they would work.

I use Imgur.com. Their upload is easy. Copying the link is easy too but you have to add the extension .jpeg. If you like, I can send you the html coding to post the pictures to your reports.

message 39: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21509 comments So, let me see if I can recap the responses.
Almeta and Roz - photobucket is not worth it!
Almeta and Janice - is Imgbb.com and imgur.com the same?

I can save the pictures in my spreadsheet (and the links) but getting them to show in goodreads is the other issue. I have been having more fun looking at other folks’ tasks than trying to look up the pictures on-line. I copied a link from someone the other day and I could look at other pictures in the same link. That was enlightening. Copying pictures is another story, but I think the goodreads link should work too., right?

message 40: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21509 comments Janice - I think you answered my question, but I just want to be sure. I do not intend to use your task 3 pictures for any more of my Interactive tasks (at least not yet). What I wanted to know was IF the way I used them and my wording was ok for the three tasks I created?

I think I may have one more task on my spreadsheet that I used the Andy Warhall picture for though. (Mostly because I had a book that I could use it for.). It just tickles me that I can immediately “see” something else to use them for. In other cases, it is a bust!

message 41: by Cherie (last edited Jan 07, 2021 08:03PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21509 comments 1. Badge 1, Book 1
2. Museum 24, Collection
3. The Thin Man
⭐️⭐️⭐️
4. I listened to an audiobook from my library. The pb is 201 is pages.
5. Task: Read a book that is a mystery, solved by a man & woman duo.
6. State how the book fits the criteria: Mystery is listed on the MBP. The man and woman duo are Nick and Nora Charles.

I had wanted to read this book for a long time. I think I would have enjoyed it a little more in print, but the audiobook, narrated by William Dufris was what was available. I enjoyed the story, but there were so many characters with similar names that it was hard to keep them straight. I am currently listening to Return of the Thin Man - just because it was available too.

Viji - I think you should be able to copy the icons I used off my page and paste them onto your page. Mine are generated with my iPod, which is an Apple device. I created a comment on the mobile app on my iPod and then copied them from my comment to the page where you see them. Then, I deleted the comment in the on-line app. I know that there is a table of asci characters that can be used to create specific icons too. I think Almeta has posted them somewhere in the How Do I thread, but it might take some looking. I commented on your thread and sent you some emojis. Hope you like them.

Roz | 4668 comments Yay, Cherie! One book down! I've never read one of the Dashiell Hammett books. I've seen all the Thin Man movies on Turner Classic Movies and always enjoyed them. I'll have to read them one of these days.
