This prompt is fun because there is such a wide variety of options! You could pick a book with the word fire in the title. It could be a book with fire on the cover. A character who is a firefighter. A character who is an arsonist. Book titles with words like “smoke, ash, ember, burn, heat,” etc. A non-fiction book about a famous fire or a memoir by a firefighter.

Ben Truong | 60 comments Completion Post:

Just finished reading: "Ink and Ashes" written by Valynne E. Maetani (★★★★☆), which centers on Claire Takata, a teenager, discovering a dangerous secret about her dead father, which would change her life irrevocably in this debut contemporary thriller.

Maetani made a fantastic debut, which packs a highly suspenseful blend of action, intrigue, and teen romance. Interspersed between chapters are letters that the protagonist has written to her dead father, which creates an important back story. Furthermore, Maetani writes excellently about grief and loss – especially when she discovers the secret about her dead father.

It follows the personal stories of survival and loss before, during, and after the fire while also giving fascinating information on the nature of fires and the destruction they leave behind. It's an incredibly immersive book that reads like a thriller at times.
