I read Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me by Mariko Tamaki which won a bunch of different awards.

A brilliantly told story relatable to anyone of any gender, sexual preference, etc. who understands the intricacies of love and friendship as a teenager. I hope they make this a movie!

After stating I was going to read one book, I instead read a totally different one! (But may go back to the first one still, lol) I read The Midnight Library and it was a bit too heavy for me right now. The big TW: (view spoiler)[Suicide (hide spoiler)]. It was ok for me.

That's something I need to get better at for 2021. Read/search for tw/cw!

I read Mexican Gothic, the winner of the horror category in this year's goodreads awards.

That book has some serious mood whiplash, like the first and second half of it are completely different books. It starts by introducing the main character as self-absorbed and mild degree of unlikeable, then the first half is a slow paced slog of everyone being horrible (except the poor, ill cousin) in a very fine gothic horror tradition, then at 50% or so it steps up, and by 60% it's a break-neck thriller.

It was an okay book, and I actually really liked the horror element of it, but the pacing was unbalanced.

I read Song for a New Day and The Midnight Library. I didn't like the Midnight Library very much -- it felt really trite to me in the end.

Loved Song for a New Day. It was fun and almost prophetic. I can see why it won the Nebula and was shortlisted for the Hugo.
