This book was originally self-published in 2017. Evan Winter wanted to write a book that drew from "his family and global experiences". With the number of BIPOC fantasy writers growing, Winter's book took off this year. It was re-published by Hachette/Orbit. The book made Time magazine's 2020 list of the top 100 fantasy of all time. It deserves it's spot on that list.

This is story of The Omehi people, who have been warring with their enemy for 200 years. The caste system of this civilization uses their lowest members as shields and fodder. Tau does not want that life-he wants to marry, have children. Will the goddess allow that?

The world that Evan Winter created is an epic fantasy lover's dream. Gifted women who can call down dragons, enhance soldiers and travel the underworld. However, you need to know from the beginning-this is a book about war and military training. There is nothing pretty about it. The action is non-stop, and I readily admit, by the end I was worn out.

Book # 2 has gone onto the TBR for 2021-
