forsanolim | 526 comments Sam Wyndham, only having recently arrived in Calcutta after fighting for Britain in World War I, is assigned to handle the murder of an official in the bureaucracy. A man has been murdered outside a brothel with a note in Bengali threatening that the British must leave the region left behind. He, his sub-inspector Digby, and the Indian police sergeant Banerjee attempt to solve the case, and tensions rise as fears of terrorism rise around Calcutta and the brutality of the British regime is made clear.

I thought that the setting and plot of this novel were really interesting, and it was a quick and enjoyable read. One thing that frustrated me a little was that it felt a little difficult to keep ahead of the mystery--Wyndham would sometimes suddenly think of a small clue and act on it, only later explaining how this clue fit into the puzzle. It was definitely enjoyable, though, and I'm looking forward to reading more of the series.
