There are so many wonderful books that have been translated from their original language.

The Traveling Cat Chronicles - Hiro Arikawa
The Neverending Story - Michael Ende
The Three-Body Problem - Cixin Liu
The Shadow of the Wind - Carlos Ruiz Zafón

My husband loves a novella called 'A Chess Story" or "The Royal Game" by Stefan Zweig that would be fun if you can find it, especially of you're into chess at moment after a 'Queen's Gambit binge. It would also work as a book about a game.

I read "And Every Day The Way Home Gets Longer and Longer"...and balled my eyes out for the whole 2-3 hours it took. Such a good novella!
