The Rebellious Readers discussion

We’re back with another challenge in January 2021, called the January Series Finisher Challenge, which you can sign up for here! As the name suggests, this challenge is focused on finishing series that you’ve started but not yet completed. This is supposed to be a more laid-back challenge to encourage you to pick up more books you never got around to reading. Thanks to Emma for this great suggestion!

Sign ups will close on the 1 January and teams will most likely be announced on that same day. Once again, you have the option of either participating on a team or as a solo participant. The person or team with the most amount of points wins! Only books that are read during January can be used in this challenge, but you may count books started before January, and finished in January.

Series can be of any length, and can either be already published or still ongoing, but if it’s an ongoing series, the aim is to read up to the most recently published book. You have to have started the series before for it to count (ie. read at least one book in the series before 2021).

In addition to this, you can also earn points for reading any books which have been added to your TBR prior to 2021! This is to encourage you to tackle your TBR list and read more books from it! Books can be of any length, and any genre for this challenge. Please note that you will still earn page points for any books read in this challenge, however you can earn bonus points if the book is from an unfinished series or from your TBR. And like before, you will also earn extra points if you include a review, buddy read a book, or read the group BOTM.

Please specify below whether you’d like to participate in a team or to go solo. See below, how to earn points! Have fun! :)

Pages Points Breakdown:

100 pages or less = 3 points
101 - 200 pages = 4 points
201 - 300 pages = 5 points
301 - 400 pages = 7 points
401 - 500 pages = 9 points
501 - 600 pages = 11 points
601 - 700 pages = 13 points
701+ pages = 15 points

Extra Points:

—> Is it part of an Unfinished Series? = +3 points
—> Completed 1 Unfinished Series = +5 points (for every series you finish)
—> Completed 5 Unfinished Series = +10 points (in addition to points earned for each series you finish)
—> Is it a book from your TBR list? If yes = +3 points (must be a book added to your TBR list prior to 2021)
—> Is it a Rebellious Readers BOTM? If yes = +3 points
—> Is it a Buddy Read? If yes = +3 points
—> Is it a Manga/Graphic Novel/ etc? = -1 point
—> Does it have a review? (Points awarded based on length/quality of review) —> Short Review = +1 point, Medium Review = +2 points, Long Review = +3 points

Hey, I think I'll actually join this time, but only solo, so I don't damage any team if I end up backing out for focusing on uni. I have a bunch of series I wanna finish next, so this is just perfect.

Yes, you will still earn page points for reading any book you want, you just won’t get additional points if it’s not part of an unfinished series! :)

Do novellas count for this challenge? I started but did not finish The Folk of the Air trilogy, which has the three primary works plus two others that Goodreads lists as #1.5 and #3.5 in the series. Would those two count toward the challenge?
