Hello Goodreaders!

For my MA Thesis I am focusing on several book covers and their relation to the novel, including a few covers of Shelley's Frankenstein. If you have read the book, could you answer one simple question for me? It won't take long! (as it truly is 1 question). I'll post the link below.

I did vote for the FRANKENSTEIN. But I found many other covers missing. There were only limited numbers.

Jamie asked a great question. I'd love to comment, but don't want to screw up the process for others.

I'm so happy that we can comment. Some of the Frankenstein covers were hilarious and I'm guessing probably designed for a news stand display.

I found it difficult choosing between two of the Frankenstein covers. I think the first one fit the isolation and loneliness both Victor and the creature experience. The fact that you can't tell who the figure is allows you to picture that it's either Victor or the creature on the cover. That was my ultimate choice. However, the cover on which both Victor and the creature do appear captured very well the fact that the creature becomes a fully-developed, educated, cultured being, which raises the question as to what extent he may in fact be truly human.

I picked the Downtown Press cover for Frankenstein. I agree with Andrew, the cover depicts the isolation and loneliness which resonates through most of the book. If I had to pick a second cover it would be the Lion edition. Although the clothing isn't exactly accurate to the time, the emotion felt by the "monster" is spot on. He wanted to experience life but that was destroyed because of his looks. Anger filled him and I'm sure he felt remorse at times. If I had to pick a cover that I was going to buy it would be the Sterling Publishing although I like how the Alma Books cover reminds me of when the creature was spying into the house at the beginning. I had a harder time with The Time Machine. I ended up choosing the Berkley Books cover. It too shows the isolation I'm sure the traveler felt and it also shows the unknown. The picture is a good representation of his trip 30 million years into the future. Since the ending makes it unclear where the traveler ends up maybe the William Heinemann 1st edition or Dover Thrift are best with no picture at all. I also like the Reader's Library and Pan Books because they show Weena and the Morlocks.

How is the thesis going?
