For POPULAR, I finally read The Song of Achilles, which was awarded the Orange Prize for Fiction. Such a beautiful, heartbreaking book.

For PINING, I read People We Meet on Vacation. It's pretty clear that both Poppy and Alex pine for each other over the years and just don't act on it until late in the game.
