Hi everyone! My name is Marissa, and I'm so excited to be hosting this readathon this year. Whether you are ready to reread the Brontës with me or are embarking on these fantastic authors for the first time, you are in the right place! I'm a massive fan of Charlotte, Anne, and Emily and I can't wait to discuss their novels with you all! If you haven't checked out my channel or the announcement video yet, please do. And please also introduce yourselves below. What is your experience with the Brontës? Do you have a favorite Brontë novel or Brontë sister? I personally vacillate on my favorites too much to say for certain!

message 2: by Heather (new)

Heather (freshparchment16) | 1 comments Hi everyone! My name is Heather and I'm very excited for this readathon to push me to read the rest of the sisters' works. So far I prefer Charlotte of the Brontës, but that's not really fair, as I haven't read any of Anne's work yet. I read Jane Eyre when I was about 15, Wuthering Heights when I was 17 and 18 for classes, and I read Shirley this past year for Victober. I can't wait to revisit these works and discuss some new ones with you all!

message 3: by Laurie (new)

Laurie Hi, I'm Laurie. I have read all of the Bronte books except Shirley. I read four of the novels last year and I probably won't reread those, but I will read Shirley, reread Wuthering Heights, and something in November. I am excited to read the ones I will read with the group and to see everyone's opinions of the others.

message 4: by Mike (new)

Mike (mrosen23) | 6 comments I’m Mike. Avid classics fan. Love me some Dickens, Brontë, Austen and all the rest. I’ve read the well known stuff... Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Tenant of Wildfell Hall. I look forward to reading others I haven’t gotten to yet... and of course, rereading. Question for you all... what versions do you find yourselves reading? I can’t seem to find any penguin classics or better versions for Villette or the Professor.

message 5: by Bonn Karla (last edited Jan 01, 2021 10:12PM) (new)

Bonn Karla (zangerstein) | 1 comments Hi, I'm Bonn. I've read a few classics, mainly by Dickens, and those that are often dark, specially around the Victorian Era (which I'm more familiar with Historically). For the Brontës, I've only read Wuthering Heights (in which I agree with Marissa for hating everyone and loving the story).
This year round readathon may help me get into some of the good stuff I've been missing out on.
Since were starting with Villette, I can only purchase on Kindle (lockdown woes still on) and I found a one at $0.99. Don't know if this version is good though...

message 6: by Maria Cristina (new)

Maria Cristina (puella63) | 7 comments Hi
I'm Cristina from Lisboa, Portugal.
I love classics. In 2020 I reread Jane Eyre and read Shirley for the first time.
Funny enough, when I made plans for my winter reads, I put Vilette in. It'll be a new one for me. I had decided to read all the Brontë books. So, I'm thrilled to be here.

message 7: by Yulia (new)

Yulia (obibooks) | 1 comments Hello, I'm Yulia from Indonesia. So excited to read other works by Charlotte. I've read Anne and Emily works and currently reading the professor. Since there's no translated version for Vilette in my language maybe I'll try to read the English one.

message 8: by João Vitor (new)

João Vitor (jojoaaao) | 4 comments Hello! My name is João Vitor and I am from the south of Brazil. I don't usually use goodreads and participate in reading projects, but I was really excited for this one! From the Brontë sisters I read Jane Eyre and The Wuthering Heights, I am currently reading Villette. I may have to read The Professor in English, because it hasn't come out in my language yet (and it will be a big challenge lol). I am very excited and I want to read all of Charlotte's books.

message 9: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (ahoy_v) | 2 comments Hi everyone, nice to see so many people coming together! My name is Veronica. I haven't read too much of the Bronte sisters... I have vague memories of passing the time with Jane Eyre from an English-language version bought at a Chinese book store and I possibly read Wuthering Heights in high school. Looking forward to the discussions!

message 10: by Maddy (new)

Maddy | 1 comments Hi my name is maddy and I am a fan of the bronte sisters since I was a teenager and I have red all of Charlotte bronte'novels so far except the professor.
I also red Emily and both Anne novels as well.
It will be a reread kind of experience for me and I love the sisters as a trio.
Very exciting project

message 11: by Shay (new)

Shay | 1 comments Hello everyone!
I hope you are all doing great.
My name is shrouk.
I love classics so much, but so far the only bronte novel I've read is Jane Eyre, and it is one of my all times favorite books.
I am really excited to read the rest of the bronte novels.

message 12: by Iza (new)

Iza Brekilien (izabrekilien) Hello, I'm Iza from France.
I've been a fan of the Brontës since my early teens - my sister was a fan too, so I read Wuthering heights (her favourite) and Jane Eyre (my favourite book of all times).
When I became a librarian, I read all the Brontë novels, the juvenilia and a couple of biographies. Last year, I started my own Brontë project so I re-read Wuthering heights, Agnes Grey, The tenant of Wildfell Hall, The professor, their poems, letters and other related books, including Elizabeth Gaskell's biography of Charlotte.
I'm currently reading another edition of their letters and am delighted to join this group with other Brontë lovers !

message 13: by Chelsey (new)

Chelsey (chelseybell) Hey everyone, my name is Chelsey.

I've loved all things Victorian for as long as I can remember, but I never got around to reading all of the Brontë's works. This reading challenge is the perfect opportunity to finally do it!

As far as favorites, my favorite of the Brontë novels would probably have to be Jane Eyre. It was my first exposure to the Brontës and it just gets better with every re-read. I don't have a favorite Brontë sister, but I do get a kick out of the "Dude Watchin' with the Brontes" comic by Kate Beaton (it does have some profanity and does tease the Brontës a bit, so avoid it if that's not to your taste).

I'm happy to join the group and excited to finally check off all of the Brontë books from my reading goals :)

message 14: by Katie (new)

Katie (creightie) | 1 comments Hi everyone, my name is Katie.

I am excited to read through the Bronte's catalogue over the course of this year. I hope I can keep up!

Jane Eyre is one of my favorite books but it's been about a decade since I have read it. I last read Wuthering Heights a couple years ago for Victober. I tried to read Shirley this past October but I was too ambitious with everything I had going on that month. Excited to get to Anne's work in addition to Charlotte's other novels.

message 15: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Cooke (Bookish Shenanigans) | 2 comments Hey pals, Jenny here, otherwise known as Bookish Shenanigans on Booktube. I'm very excited that Marissa started this group. I've read all of their novels but really want to read Charlotte's letters and the Gaskell biography of Charlotte. Very excited to reread and see if I enjoy some more the second time around (ie The Professor). Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights are some of my favourite books of all time.

message 16: by Susan (new)

Susan | 1 comments Hi fellow readers. I'm Susan and have read Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights but have been meaning to read more Bronte works and I am excited to share thoughts and have discussions with all of you.

message 17: by Lana (last edited Jan 13, 2021 05:07AM) (new)

Lana | 9 comments Hi everyone!
I'm Lana and my favorite Bronte book is 'Wuthering Heights'. I read it first when I was in my teens and reread it last year, it's on of my favorite Victorian novels. I've always loved books about horrible people that are superbly written.
In 2020 I read 'Jane Eyre' and 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall' for the first time and loved them both. I'm still amazed by the incredible talent of the three sisters. This year I won't be reading those three again, but one of my reading goals for this year is to read all the rest of the Bronte novels, so this project is just the right thing for me. Thanks to Marissa for hosting this readathon. I'll probably join in with 'Villette' by the end of January or the beginning of February and hope to catch up with everyone.

message 18: by Amy (new)

Amy McCracken (amymc109) Hi, everyone, I am Amy and I am a huge Bronte fan. Jane Eyre is probably my favorite from the group, and that novel is the reason why I became an English teacher and got my Master's in Literature. I am fascinated by the orphan character in literature, and Jane began that love affair for me. I also love Wuthering Heights and have taught both Jane (which my students sadly dislike) and Wuthering Heights (which they love!) in my AP Literature class. I have also read/taught Wide Sargasso Sea, which my students really like.

I can't wait to begin and talk about the books! I love literary discussion but also just dishing about the book and the characters. I look forward to being a part of this group!

message 19: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn Williams | 1 comments Hi! My name is Katie. I am so excited for this read along and to be able to discuss the books with others! I have only read Jane Eyre and Shirley so I look forward to reading the rest of the list.

message 20: by Mary (new)

Mary Wong | 13 comments Hi I am Mary from Singapore! I have only read Jane Eyre, Tenant of Wildfeld Hall and Shirley (which I really couldn't get into!) I am looking forward to rereading these authors that I love and give books that I hadn't really enjoyed another try!

message 21: by Katie (new)

Katie Lumsden (katie-booksandthings) | 1 comments Hi, I'm Katie (Books and Things on Booktube). I love the Brontes and can't wait to reread some of their books this year!

message 23: by F (new)

F (faije) | 2 comments Hi my name is Faye, I'm from the Netherlands! I read Jane Eyre back in February 2020 and then The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey! I wanted to read the other books written by Charlotte last year, but wasn't able to get to it! I can't say that I have a favourite Brontë because I love them all in their own way. I am immensely looking forward to discussing the books with you all! Thank you Marissa for hosting this project!

message 24: by Margarita (new)

Margarita Rodríguez | 4 comments Hi! I´m Marga from Spain. I'm 22 and I am an English Literature graduate currently doing a MA in Literary Studies. Ever since I read Jane Eyre for my English Literature of the XIX's century module I totally fell in love with it. I literally went crazy lol (as you can see I am quite prone to romantic-gothic passions lmao). I consider Jane Eyre my all time favourite book and every time I reread a single line from the book I cannot help but cry. It's just too much how emotional I get when it comes to a book that has changed me so much and shaped me into what I am today... anyway. I've also read The professor, Wuthering Heights, Villette and, of course Agnes Grey (I did my degree dissertation on this work)
Next year I am willing to do my PhD dissertation on the Brontë sisters and hopefully continue doing reseach on Victorian Literature and the Brontës. I am so happy I found out about this group.

message 25: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (zeilenschwelgerei) | 2 comments Hi everyone! My name's Lisa and I'm from Germany. I read Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights at Uni a few years ago but the course was so terribly boring that I kinda felt forced to just read the novels and be done with them. Later I read them again just for myself and loved both of them so much. Now I'm really looking forward to participate in this challenge and learn more about the Brontë sisters works :)

message 26: by Mike (new)

Mike (mrosen23) | 6 comments Thanks Faye! Never heard of awesome books before, but I may have a new site to get my books from!

message 27: by Marcus (new)

Marcus | 19 comments Hi all, my name is Marcus and, whilst I live in Australia, I am originally from Bradford which is only 9 miles from the home of the Brontes in Haworth. I had incidentally just finished Wuthering Heights late last year, but am looking forward tremendously to exploring more of the Brontes’ work during this readathon.

message 28: by Amanda (last edited Jan 15, 2021 09:52AM) (new)

Amanda | 6 comments Hi, I'm Amanda. I read Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre about 13-15 years ago, so I don't remember much. I recall liking Jane Eyre, but finding Wuthering Heights very confusing. I love reading all sorts of classics - I've read most of Dickens's works, and have fairly recently gotten into Anthony Trollope, Elizabeth Gaskell, and George Eliot. I just watched the 2006 BBC Jane Eyre miniseries and the film To Walk Invisible, which made me excited to rediscover Jane Eyre as well as the Bronte's other works.
I just read Agnes Grey at the beginning of this month, so will probably not reread it for this challenge. I enjoyed the scenes with Agnes's pupils - I'm a school librarian and have had some similar experiences with students - but I found the end of the book relatively boring compared to the beginning.

message 29: by Minna N. (new)

Minna N. | 1 comments Hi, my name is Minna and I'm from Finland. So excited about this readathon. I read Jane Eyre last october first time after being a teenager. I remembered liking it at the time but this time was completely blown away by it. So I had already decided to read more of the Bronte's books when I discovered this readathon. Thanks Marissa!

message 30: by NessaReads (new)

NessaReads | 2 comments Hi, I'm Vanessa from Austria. I previously read Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. I love Jane Eyre, but I had my problems with Wuthering Heights, but I'll try it again. Many of the other Bronte works are on my bookshelf, so this is the perfect opportunity to read them!

message 31: by Jun (new)

Jun | 2 comments Hello - I'm Jun from Canada. I recently read Jane Eyre and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall; I quite enjoyed the former. I'm looking forward to reading more of the sisters' works this year.

message 32: by Nick (new)

Nick | 1 comments Hi, I’m Nick from Australia. I’m a bit late joining! I have just finished The tenant of Wildfell Hall as part of the GR Obscure Reading Group. I have also read Jane Eyre several years ago. I was really impressed with Anne Brontes Wildfell Hall and want to read all the Brontes now ... Marissa has provided the opportunity, thank you Marissa for a great idea. I will read Villette when you are reading Tenant to catch up. I am also intrigued by Gaskell’s biography on Charlotte ... a classic author writing about a classic author. On editions ... I find the Oxford editions have good introductions.

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello Everyone! My name is Florence from the U.K. I really love books by the Bronte sisters. My favourite is Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. Apart from reading, I also learn Mandarin Chinese, birdwatch and write. I really like Jane Austen as well as the Bronte sisters and think that her books are very witty.

message 34: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline (spreadbookjoy) | 2 comments Hi everyone! I’m a little late to the group but so glad to be joining for the April read. I’m Jacqueline (Spread Book Joy on YouTube) and I have only ever read Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, but both have been read more than once. I first read Wuthering Heights when I studied English lit at A level and still have my annotated version from then (25 or 26 years ago!). Looking forward to this very much. Thanks Marissa for starting such a wonderful project!

message 37: by Lex (new)

Lex (lextoland) | 1 comments Hello I'm Lexie. I'm really late to the party but I've read 3 Bronte books and loved them. I'm excited for a excuse to read more of them.

I'm also very late to the party but I'm excited to join for The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. I've only read Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights before and enjoyed both so looking forward to it. Thanks Marissa for hosting this!

message 39: by Lucy (new)

Lucy Hutchins Hi everyone, I am Lucy and am a bit late joining this group and still reading The Professor. I am looking online to buy The Tenant of Wildfell Hall but notice that not all editions have the letter to Halford at the beginning of the story. Can anyone let me know which editions contain this letter. Thank you in advance.

Thank you Marissa for setting up this group. What a wonderful idea.

message 40: by Dianna (new)

Dianna (acrossgenrelines) | 1 comments Dianna here. My friend gifted me a beautiful set of the Bronte' books. I have not read some and the others I read many years ago. I look forward to working my way through these books this year.

message 41: by Janice (new)

Janice Hi, my name is Janice and I'm late to being a Bronte fan. I really thought the books would be too depressing and scary for me. I just finished reading Jane Eyre for the first time and fell in love with it!!! The only other Bronte book I have read is Agnes Grey and I enjoyed that as well. :) I hope to join in for some of your Bronte readings and hope that this will be happening in 2022 as well. :)

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

I loved both 'Jane Eyre' and 'Agnes Grey' as well, Janice. I am a fan of the Bronte sisters. Which book do you like more, 'Jane Eyre' or Agnes Grey'? For me, that question is very hard to answer. They are both very enjoyable in their own ways.

I'm not sure which I would say is my favourite as I can't quite remember Agnes Grey so for now I would have to say Jane Eyre is my favourite. :)

Carol McGillivary Rodi | 2 comments Hi, I'm Carol from Rhode Island. I just happened upon this group and joined, late or not. I read Jane Eyre a few years ago and so enjoyed it. I am late to reading the Bronte sisters but looking forward to reading all of their books, eventually so have started to pick them up when I see them. Which is half the fun.

Alicia Hello, my name is Alicia from Atlanta, Georgia. I found out about this group from Victober videos and I hope to participate in the discussion that is happening during Victober. I haven't read Wuthering Heights since I was 13. I've also chosen Anne Bronte's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall as one of my Victober choices.

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome, Alicia. I am yet to read 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall' but Wuthering Heights' is a marvellous book.

message 50: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Hollins | 2 comments Hello, my name is Sandra and would like to join you for the Victober readalong of Wuthering Heights. I started to read Victorian classics last year and found them much more enjoyable than I had previously thought they would be. I read Jane Eyre last year, and am really looking forward to reading Wuthering Heights in October.
