I think my problem with the story as a whole was just the...futility.

So far, I am trying to put myself in the Civil War mindset. I am not sure if it is because of other books I am reading, but throughout the first chapter I kept forgetting it was the Civil War timeframe and then he would mention something to bring me back.

Yeah, pretty sure this has to do with me reading too much historical fiction all at once . . . I started the year off with several!

I love historical fiction, but figured out fairly early on that I can't read two time periods at the same time. I am always reading three books (e, audio, paper) but make a concerted effort to vary genres, "voices" and timeframes, or I just can't keep the narrative threads separate.

After starting off the year with lots of historical fiction . . . I will probably back off on the genre for a bit!

I am at 52% and this one is just too slow for me.
I am at the part where (view spoiler)[ they just got the dead cow out of the river and now they got themselves arrested and shot and buried.
I was confused because why did the father make him marry the daughter and then just ship him away? (hide spoiler)]
I wanted to speed up the pace of the audible, but I can't understand him if I go any faster. lol
So on we go.

I am still early on in the book and I like it okay, but agree it is as slow as molasses. When I get to half I will check out your spoiler.

I wish I could clearly describe what it is about this book, but I cannot quite figure it out . . .

I will really get into two or three pages, but then I hit a paragraph or two that are like speedbumps and they totally derail my momentum. I think it is somewhere in the writing, delivery, word choice, etc . . .

I enjoy the parts that are smooth, but those speedbumps are a pain!

This one was too slow for me. It didn't hold my interest and I was just waiting the whole time for something to happen.
I did like the scene (view spoiler)[ where they got the cow out of the water. And actually some of the daily farm happenings with Ada1 and Ruby. (hide spoiler)]
I was sort of underwhelmed when (view spoiler)[ He got home and she didn't know who he was... Weren't they married? How come she wasn't waiting for him? Or did I miss the whole point of the book and he was pining over here, but never actually was with her before he left? (hide spoiler)] I was on audible so there was no way to go back and look, but I found that it didn't really matter anyway!

Not the worst book I ever read, but am glad to move on to the next.

I haven't read this in a few days . . . but not because of the writing (even though I agree it is slow going), it is because I have been so busy by the time I sit down to read I am exhausted and moments away from dozing off. So far 2020 has been mainly audiobooks!

Dozing is always a good thing.
