I'm so excited to be starting this discussion! I've loved several Arthurian legend books, but my favorite one is a trilogy with an King Arthur twist, and I don't want to ruin it for anyone!
Ooh, an Arthur twist! I would read that, but you will have to recommend it in some terribly sneaky way...
I haven’t read any good Arthuriana since I was a kid. Or... any. Period.... I hope it’s coming back into the lists! When I was younger, the Susan Cooper Dark is Rising series was among my absolute favorites, and in high school, I spent a summer reading Tennyson’s Idyls of the King. I did enough Middle English in college to read some Mallory, but I have been missing this whole theme in fantasy lit for an age! I am pretty excited to see it play out here.
Dark is Rising was a huuuuge one for me, and I believe I've also read the books to which Maya refers (though others from that author are my favorites, I appreciated them too). And I've come across badly done Arthurian plenty.
Ok, so one thing I can definitely say just in general — her writing is VIVID, and her similes are so original and so apt that that alone would keep me reading!
So Dark is Rising was also formative for Tracy Deonn, but I have never read it, so I grabbed it for my reading queue this year!
I've read Mists of Avalon (though have mixed feelings about it knowing what I know now about MZB), Le Morte D'Arthur, Once And Future King, a random book I had of stand-along legends about the various knights...
Ohhh, Tracy has put together a book soundtrack that follows the story starting with the prologue: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1Ol...
OOO a soundtrack!?!?! That’s the coolest idea EVER
I also have mixed feelings about the Mists of Avalon. I loved it a lot when I was a teen but it’s very, very 70s.
I actually came here specifically to say that HELLO, that’s the hands down best kissing scene I have ever read in my life. It is both steamy and classy. I hope it’s not a spoiler to say there is a kissing scene but damn

I can’t stop going Squeeeeese
When is that second book coming out???
Also, I actually didn’t *quite* see that twist coming. I am usually a step ahead of the story — several steps ahead in the typical YA novel — but this one has had me on my toes the whole time.
