Muyina On my birthday I've received a compilation of short stories and novels by Carson McCullers. That will be my next January reading.

I think I read her short story "Sucker" for school at some point. Beautiful writing! What is your favourite piece of literature of hers so far?

Muyina Well, that was exactly the first story in the book. I quite liked it. I found the writing sincere and was pleasantly surprised by how natural it felt, considering she was a young girl writing from the point of view of a boy.
I'll read some more before choosing my favourite piece!

Muyina So I didn't finish the book yet, but I'll comment on the short stories. According to the prologue, this edition covers all of them, except the last one from the uncompleted trilogy.
I like her later work the most. Maybe that's because I get used to her writing, or it was just that her skills were showed in the chronological order of the index. I enjoyed the poetic yet precise description of little things, which is quite common in American authors (at least those I've read). However, this time there was something questionless about those descriptions to me.
What most impressed me was that her characters were never dislikable even they do some terrible actions. I identified with some and pitied most, but they all had souls and reasons.
So far, my favourite bits are the quick and funny "Art and Mr Mahoney" and the urban loneliness of "The Sojourner".
