Helke (mogelpackung) | 1389 comments Example post for finished books:
Book: High Haven
Author: J. Richardson
Pages: 132
Date read: 04 Feb
Cards:
2: #2 in series
3: title
8: char Emily
Skip: char Kevin

It is important, that you include all possible cards the book will fit into your comletion post. Only this way we can be sure to be able to switch books around if the need arises till the end of month.

You can use all characters from the book which have a meaning to the story. A waiter at the restaurant wont count but friends of the MC with an impact on the story will count.

Helke (mogelpackung) | 1389 comments MARCH Clues and FAQs from the captains group thread for the mini challenge:
FAQ https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Task 7: C.S. Lewis' Narnia Chronicles are all shelved as "Christian".

Task 13: The Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde. There Jane Eyre gets kidnapped and brought to the real world & detective Thursday Next discovers a way to jump into books.

Another example: The Book Jumper by M. Glaser or Inkheart by Cornelia Funke.

Clues given

When songs were being chosen, only the songs themselves and their official 80s videos were being considered without reference to later films.

Tasks 16-18; It is all about the video clip
Tasks 22-24;I suggest, you try to concentrate on the clue task 24 may or may not offer.

Task 23
(a character with permed hair/a character getting their hair permed) gets you 10 points.
The Meg Ryan hair reference will be accepted as an "extra" in any of the books you use for the mini challenge, whether it's for the permed hair or some other task, for that you get 5 bonus points "only".

task 22 should be a clue for the song title
task 23 - how they were wearing their hair in the video
24 - the name of the band/singer

FAQ
*Shelves/MPGs must be exact.

*21. Read a book where the MC is a doctor/nurse - Must be a medical doctor

*For the "Meg Ryan hair" the wording/phrasing can be different as long as the reference is there

*For Scandinavia: Iceland, Greenland, Faroe Islands & Finland will also be accepted besides Denmark/Norway/Sweden.

*Task 2: A Mage will also count

*Task 33: Everything on cover must be black and white.

Answers to questions from captains:
Obviously there are lots of famous 80s songs, but if you make a little reasearch along this line, I hope you'll find quite some clues considering the tasks as well.
When songs were being chosen, only the songs themselves and their official 80s videos were being considered without reference to later films.
Dunno if this is any help or not.
And if you guess the artist/song right, you can get the extra points even if you don't complete the book tasks.
Obviously I am not going to point the metaphysical finger ... lol ... but it's definitely borrowed feathers.... hairdos...
For the "Meg Ryan hair" the wording/phrasing can be different as long as the reference is there. Just please give the quote, location for it.
Meg Ryan is not really a clue, just a little extra!

Sometimes the clue points more to the artist/band or the title of their song, sometimes its the video.

Tasks aka clues 16 -18 are all about the video clip.

Shelves/MPGs must be exact.

For Scandinavia: Iceland, Greenland, Faroe Islands & Finland will also be accepted besides Denmark/Norway/Sweden.

Does it have to be a white suite or will any white clothes do? It needs to be white, male clothing because of the clue-thingy, but I accept white shirt/coat as well.
And, for all of the people who were not alive to be rocking feathered hair and leg warmers, it seems that several of the songs were also done on Glee. Including the song with the white coat.
I'm sure that helps a lot.

For 10-12, leopard is a very literal clue!
Task 10 should be the clue for the song title
Task 11 is reference to the artist/band's name

task 1 - name of the band
task 2 - title of the song
task 3 - reference to the singer

Helke (mogelpackung) | 1389 comments Hey all,
I´m Helke from Germany. This is my third time UNO, my second time as member of the captains team and I´m looking forward to get to know you all.
At the moment I read nearly only mm romance / erotica but a lot of different genres. What I don´t like is YA or NA.
On the spreadsheet I saw that only Ann and I have UNO experience. If you have questions please don´t hesitate to ask. If we can´t get a question cleared away here one of us captains will go and ask in the captains group. One way or another you will get an answer (even if you might not like it ;) ).
In message 7 you will find a link to a spreadsheet. That is our planning sheet. Please pm me your email address so I can give you access to it. I would like for you to put your books in there, so everybody can see with one look who planned to read for which card. We each have a colour to underlay the line with so it is clear who claimed the card. Please don´t be worried if during the month books get switched around by the captains. That is quite normal.

Gustaf | 553 comments Hello everyone!
I'm Gustaf (pronounced Gustav). I live in Stockholm, Sweden with my husband and our dog Toby. Just like Helke, I mostly read MM romance/Erotica. However, I work part time at a book store so other books makes their way to my read shelf fairly often. I'm also a creative writing student, hoping to some day have the courage to write in english and actually publish it.
This is my first time playing UNO and I jumped the gun straight away and joined Helke and Melissa as a co-captain. Don't fear, I might be new to UNO but I'm a bit of a challenge junkie and have captained a few teams in other challenges. I'm sure we will figure this out together.
I'm really excited to meet you all and see what books you read. Just as Helke said, don't be afraid to reach out with questions. We are here to figure them out. Although it might be a bit hypocritical of me since I always feel awkward when I'm the one asking them 😅
I guess I have to watch Top Gun now...

Ann Sicker | 277 comments Hi I am Ann from Upstate New York. Love to read and am very competitive. This is my second year playing uno. It was my favorite team challenge in 2020. I will read most everything however not a big fan of fantasy. I am an accountant during the day and am not typically known for my creativity which is probably why I am not big fan of the fantasy genre. Can't wait to get this game started!

message 19: by Charlie (last edited Jan 20, 2021 03:55PM) (new)

Charlie Hi everyone! :)
I'm Charlie from Finland. I'm a student finishing my last year in high school. This is my first time participating in this challenge and I have looked forward to this since last year when I found out about this!
Lately I've been primarily reading YA which helped me get over a bit of a reading slump and got me back on track with reading. I also enjoy for example classics, horror/mystery and fantasy. I like watching movies also so I guess I too should watch Top Gun soon :D
Very excited and glad to start this with you all!

Melissa A | 18 comments Hi everyone, I’m Melissa from New York here in the US. Nice to meet you all! I have been a big reader since I was a little kid. I tend to pick intense, sometimes traumatic novels, or stories with lots of character and relationship depth. A lot of the time if I like an author, I’ll just start reading all their books :-). I tend to stay away from mystery/horror and YA. I have enjoyed a few different fantasy novels. I’m really looking forward to playing!!! And I love the movie Top Gun!!

Carly (justanothersnakecult) | 50 comments Hello, everyone! I’m Carly, and I live in the US. I’m very new to this group and trying to motivate myself to read more. UNO sounded like a great way to experience books I would never choose for myself. Looking forward to it!

message 25: by Carly (new)

Carly (justanothersnakecult) | 50 comments ... and I already have a question! This seems to be a challenge really geared toward fiction, but I enjoy pop science quite a lot. I’m assuming non-fiction will be permissible as well, right?

Also forgot to say that “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins is criminally under appreciated and I’m glad this group has me thinking about it daily now. :D

message 28: by Helke (new)

Helke (mogelpackung) | 1389 comments Carly you can read everybook you like to. There are no restrictions. If you want to read a dictionary you could as long as it fits a card.

Kate | 38 comments Hello team Top Gun. I am Kate from the state of Virginia. I am a newbie to UNO, but I have participated in other team challenges. I am open to reading most things, but I tend to choose mysteries and thrillers most often.

We are some sort of neighbours too as I´m from Germany.
So we have 3 North american and 3 Europe members. Think we will still find to chat together.

message 35: by Helke (new)

Helke (mogelpackung) | 1389 comments So most of you have access to the planning sheet and the rest will get there soon. The cards for February are out. Maybe take a look and if you are the type for it start planning your books.

message 36: by Helke (new)

Helke (mogelpackung) | 1389 comments Carly I found your request. Luckily I went to check on my emails. Sorry haven´t done this sharing a google sheet before. You should have access now.

Okay great, thank you! I did PM you my address before I saw this, sorry.

I am OBSESSED with the planning spreadsheet for this; it tickles the organizational part of me. :D Are we going to discuss who takes what first, or would you like us to fill in our plans as we decide on them? My understanding is that we need to finish Hand 1 before we get points for Hand 2, correct?
