Lexi | 736 comments We have a Mini Challenge and we got one of my all-time favorite children's books. Link: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Our assigned book is: Howl's Moving Castle

We have given each team a popular book from the 1980s.

As a team, you need to try and read as many books that you can connect with your 1980s book as possible. The ways the books "connect" is completely open to interpretation.

Creativity is the key to the challenge, not rules. You don't need a unique reason for each book read and connected.

For each book read and connected you will receive 10 points. As a team you can read a maximum of 40 books for this mini challenge.

If one of your team members also reads (and finishes) your assigned 80s book during the mini challenge, you will receive 30 bonus points. (There is only 30 points per team so although more than 1 team member is welcome to read the book, there are no extra points on offer)

◈ Books can be started at any point since the start of the UNO challenge (Feb 1)
◈ Books need to be finished after the start of this mini challenge on February 14, 9am UTC

Ways books could connect:
MPG Fantasy, YA, middle grade, adventure, classics, childrens, romance

British author, Name in title, possessive in title, features an elderly protagonist, features a witch, talking inanimate object, flying object on cover, castle on cover or takes place in a castle, prince in disguise, MC has sisters, hats, Books made into a movie, MC cursed, MC likes to clean etc...
(view spoiler)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments Welcome everyone to this year's UNO challenge :D I'm already really excited as I've been in a really big reading slump, and Uno usually helps me getting out of it.

Important information regarding the challenge will be posted in the reserved spots above, so you can always come back to that. But of course Christina, Lexi and I are always here for any questions you have :)

For a start I'd love if everyone can introduce themselves and check in with us. Also please include the link to your uno shelf in your comment.

My name is Daniela, I'll be 26 in May (too soon in my opinion) and I'm from Austria. Currently studying to become an english and german teacher. I mostly read english books of any genre, whatever I think is interesting. But this year my goal is to pick up more books from german/austrian authors as I really need to up my reading game for my german study haha

Gem ~ZeroShelfControl~ (zeroshelfcontrol) | 574 comments Hi teamies!!
I'm Gem, from UK and I'm 33. I am currently WFH because of lockdown so along with reading lots I'm getting in a few audios too. I love thrillers and horrors, but I wont shy away from a romance here and there. I have a spreadsheet ready to go (I love a SS) with coloured covers and what they could be used for. I have A LOT of netgalleys I want to get through so hoping this challenge will get me motivated.

M Beal | 317 comments Hello. I am M from Vancouver Canada. I am so happy to be on a team named after one of my favorite movies. I am a complete sci-fi addict with a heavy side of fantasy and some historical fiction thrown in for good measure.

Here is my shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments Hi everyone! *waves*

My name is Christina (she/her), I live in Austria, and this is my fifth time co-captaining. Due to covid I hardly work at the moment as I used to be a waitress in my mum's restaurant which would be good for my reading you might think, but nope, I've been struggling a lot lately. I hardly read physical/e- books anymore, but I listen to audiobooks while walking my dog.

I used to read thrillers/mysteries for the most part, but I also like contemporaries, especially lgbt and hard hitting ones, but none that focus on romance only. Occasionally I read other genres as well and of course I'm always open to suggestions.

A special welcome to our newbies this year - I know this might be a bit much at first, but please try to get familiar with the rules and don't hesitate to ask if you've got any questions.
Important links and infos will be shared and get updated in the posts above :)

Val (pagespoursandpups) (goodreadscomval-lawrence) | 200 comments Hi all, I am Valarie (or Val) and I live in Georgia, right outside Atlanta. I have always loved reading, but have had so much more time to get reading done now that my kids are grown and in college. My favorites are fiction (Women's and Historical) and mystery/thrillers. I look forward to dipping in other genres to broaden my horizons.

As far as my age, I'll say I'm double Daniela and leave it at that. Haha - honestly though I am so happy where I am in my life that I don't worry about my age. This is my first time playing UNO so I would love tips anyone wants to share (especially regarding organizing my shelves).

Excited to play with all of you!

Charly Hart (charlyhart) | 212 comments Hello Everyone!!

My name is Charly and I'm from Austin, Texas! This will be my third year play Uno and I enjoy it so much! I love reading, murder/mystery, romance and thrillers. I have read a couple historical books and have really loved them too. I'm trying to increase my reading this year and always tend to read more during Uno.

I'm working on my BA in Project Management and I work full time. Reading is my escape from it all and I love it so much!

I look forward to seeing what everyone is reading and making new reading friends!

My Uno Shelf is: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Happy reading,
Charly

Susan | 19 comments Hi I'm Susan and I'm involved in these challenges when my daughter Lexi asks me if I want to play. We do these challenges together to broaden our reading choices and have something to talk about when we both head out each morning for our long-distance walk and escape Pandemic claustrophobia. She's in MA and I'm in KY.

Ingeborg (redrum) | 410 comments Hi! I'm Ingeborg, from Norway, and I'm 28. I'm studying bioengineering, and outside my studies I spend quite a bit of time in the stables with my horse. :)

This'll be my fifth time playing UNO. I've also been in a bit of a reading slump, but like Daniela, I also find that challenges help me out of that. My favourite genre is fantasy, but I do branch out for some variation.

My UNO shelf.

I'm looking forward to playing and getting to know you all!

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments Gem ~Zero Shelf Control~ wrote: "When are the first cards handed out?"

We are already assigned cards, you can see them in our Team Spreadsheet (first comment)

Gem ~ZeroShelfControl~ (zeroshelfcontrol) | 574 comments ooooh so they are :) Thanks!
I can take any of the coloured cards, if any are particularly tricker than the others to cover I can do those. When do you want to start working them out?

message 26: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments So what I usually did in previous years: people do not need to reserve certain cards. Just read whatever your heart desire and then give us all the information for how it works in our tracking sheet.

As for coloured cards, if you have one lying around that fits, "reserve" them in the tracking sheet . It's right at the top :) If we can plan our coloured cards that'd be amazing as they are the trickier ones.

The tracking sheet is linked in this comment

message 27: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Zekotic | 923 comments Regarding the tracking sheet, we will explain it in detail once everyone had a achance to check in, latest by the end of next week :)

JL Roberts (jlroberts) | 216 comments Hi all. I'm Jillian from Muskegon, Michigan. This is my first time playing UNO. I read mostly romance and most sub-genre attached to it. I cannot say my favorite book or author because I have so many of them. I am currently working on growing my physical book collection after building a new bookshelf so this challenge will give me a reason to buy more.

Lexi | 736 comments Since Gem asked and claimed a colour, I thought I would introduce/refresh memories on the colour cards. We have 8 coloured cards for this round, and these are the ones that are best to claim, so they all get covered by the end of the month. The cover must be over 50% of the colour and the number still must work as well. Our cards are:
2 Red
6 Blue
8 Blue
3 Green
5 Green
3 Yellow
5 Yellow
8 Yellow

So I claimed the Yellow 3 with Master of Poisons by Andrea Hairston - yellow cover and author H (Andrea Hairston)

We also have 5 Wild Draw 4s. These must repeat one of the coloured cards. For instance, I claimed a Wild Draw 4 for the Blue 6. Each card can be used for a Wild Draw 4 only once, so no one else can read a Wild Draw 4 for a blue 6 but the other 7 are still options.

If you have a book you want to read, then please put your name next to the card in the tracking sheet (here)

Feel free to ask any questions on coloured cards in general or specific covers

M Beal | 317 comments I can do any of the color covers. I usually plan for these challenges like a psychopath and have books for each one ready to go.

Also for the Captains, would there be an issue of I post my read books once a week so I can get the all over with at once?

Gem ~ZeroShelfControl~ (zeroshelfcontrol) | 574 comments That’s a point. Do you want completion posts, or to just mark the finish date in the tracker?

You don't need to make completion posts, just put the date in the tracker :) however, if you liked a book it never hurts to share with us :D

Val (pagespoursandpups) (goodreadscomval-lawrence) | 200 comments I’m planning an upcoming Buddy read of The Push
And Anxious People

Where could they fit in?

Gem ~ZeroShelfControl~ (zeroshelfcontrol) | 574 comments The push could work for Blue 6 - Blue cover and character called Sam for S
Anxious people could work for yellow and 4 (author F) but without reading it and knowing characters name I'm not sure what else it would fit.

message 39: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 736 comments Thank you Gem for your help, covers need to be over 50% the color, so Anxious People will not work for yellow (the people take up about 2/3 of the cover) but would work for F for author as well as character names. The Push works for a Blue 6 as Gem notes.

Val, are you good with using the tracking spreadsheet? It has all the options and you can put the books you read/ are planning to read on there.

Good to know about the 50% color.

I will put The Push on the spreadsheet. Do I also put it on my UNO shelf or wait until I've finished it?

I always find it best to put a book in my uno shelf once I start reading it. That way I won't forget.

Also, if you are unsure about the cards and what they work for - I linked the "All About Uno" in the top comments with important Information. If you follow the link it tells you about all the cards in detail as well.

Charly Hart (charlyhart) | 212 comments Hello y'all!

I feel like I've missed so much! I have my books planned for February and will be back on later today to update what cards they work for. Had a second during work to jump on here. I will need help figuring out the colors the covers work for. I have not been able to figure that out in past challenges. I'll check in later with my books!

JL Roberts (jlroberts) | 216 comments I plan to start with the Moonlight and Motor Oil Series by Kristen Ashley. The first one is The Hookup (Moonlight and Motor Oil #1) and has a blue cover and the second one is The Slow Burn (Moonlight and Motor Oil, #2) It has a Greenish cover. I see the blue spots are claimed so what else could I us? Sorry first time I may need to be walked through this.

message 46: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 736 comments Charly, feel free to post any color covers than you have questions on.

Jillian, yours works great as a Wild Draw 4 for the 2nd Blue 8. I added you to the planning sheet. I don't quite know what the 2nd one is as a color. It is a greenish brown or a brownish green - The Slow Burn (Moonlight and Motor Oil, #2) by Kristen Ashley . Does anyone else have a vote?
