W | 34 comments And,of course,Hitchcock will always be right up there.Never tire of watching his movies,no matter how many times I've watched them.

message 10: by W (new)

W | 34 comments Stanley Kubrick, love most of his work. However,he did make some rather twisted films as well, particularly A Clockwork Orange. And his last movie,Eyes Wide Shut, was controversial but interesting nevertheless. And Lolita.
Particularly enjoyed Paths of Glory,Dr.Strangelove and Full Metal Jacket. The Shining wasn't bad, either.

W | 34 comments John Ford,my favorite movie of his is,They were Expendable.

Dr.Zhivago
And the one I enjoyed most,A Passage to India.

Like most of them and I note they are your favorites.
Personally I would replace Eastwood, Sturges, Curtiz, the Coens (who all have great movies to their credit) and Tarantino with:

George Stevens
Fred Zinnemann
Douglas Sirk (for his 1950's Universal films)
Francis Ford Coppola (for his works in the '70s)
Stanley Kubrick

But like all of us, directors have their ups and downs.
And no doubt I've missed a few in my list.
I think for sheer consistency of making excellent films, you've got to take your hat off to the likes of Wyler, Ford, Hitchcock and Zinnemann.

Goodreader (onyx8) I love Christopher Nolan as a director. He's brilliant. The concepts he's able to bring to film, and to do on screen with no CGI or greenscreen, are extraordinary. Whether creating one of the most iconic movie trilogies surrounding an existing character ever, or building entire worlds around concepts most of us could never even begin to dream of, his work is stunning. He gets incredible performances out of his actors and crew every single time as well. The fact that he's only just 50 is so exciting - there's a lot more to come from him and I'm ready for all of it.

Aditya | 1632 comments My top ten:
Sidney Lumet
Billy Wilder
Stanley Kubrick
Martin Scorsese
Frank Capra
Francis Ford Coppola (his 70s work is the best decade a director ever had)
Stephen Spielberg (for his epics not his blockbusters)
Elia Kazan
Chris Nolan (greatest director of genre movies but like Coppola he had an extraordinary decade rather than a great career)
Milos Foreman

Underrated:
Darren Aronofsky, Peter Bogdanovich, Richard Brooks, Frank Darabont, Stanley Kramer, Mike Nichols, Martin Ritt

message 19: by W (new)

W | 34 comments I'll add William Wyler to my list.Loved Roman Holiday and enjoyed Friendly Persuasion.May have seen more of his films, but didn't pay attention to the name earlier.

Jeffrey Marshall (jmarsh17) | 57 comments Ang Lee has created a great portfolio in different genres. His best movie is LIfe of Pi, which has extraordinary scenes of a young guy trying to coexist in a lifeboat with a tiger. Very moving in an amazing way. Also would single out "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," "Sense and Sensibility" (perhaps the best of the Austen movies) and "The Ice Storm."

I love Lee! His movies are so diverse, and yet even with a superhero movie (Hulk) he makes it visually stunning.
