What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I read a book about 12 years ago (maybe 12 years ago) that I’d like to read again but can’t remember the title. It’s about a man who, since childhood, has always had to hide his face. When a person sees his face they immediately want to kill him. His mother took care of him for several years, but could rarely look at him. She finally had to send him out on his own because she couldn’t take it anymore. A priest, who knew his mother, agreed to help him by giving him money etc...but even he was affected when he saw the boys face. Once when the man got the courage to look into a mirror (SPOILER TO COME) his face was perfectly normal. He was very confused about what it was that elicited the reaction from others who saw his face. He eventually found an ally at the library. Thanks for your help!!
