Four Months from Start

Patrizia has new Iconic Trail for us to trek!
Map-SM
John Muir is a naturalist who has inspired many and three different trails have been created in his honor, both in the United States and in his native Scotland. We will travel the most famous (and longest) of the three.
✱ The John Muir Trail in California is the best-known and most popular long-distance trail in the United States, though few limit themselves to short segments.
✱ It should not be confused with the almost homonymous trail, just 33 km (20 miles) long, present in Tennessee.
✱ In 2014 another route, the John Muir Way, was opened in Scotland; 215 km (130 miles) long, it crosses that region from coast to coast.

Complete: 10 tasks (one from each section).
To make the challenge a little harder you can choose to do the tasks in order.

Challenge Rules: All forms of books are accepted as long as they are 100 pages or more. When posting updates of completed books, please include a link to the title and author’s name, along with the date you finished reading the book. Please post cover if it is task appropriate. When you have completed the challenge, please copy and paste your entire challenge and repost in a new message, letting us know it is completed.

********************************************************************

1. John Muir
John-Muir
John Muir was born in Scotland in 1838 and emigrated with his family to the United States when he was still a child. They moved to San Francisco in 1868. A trip to Yosemite inspired him to become a fervent protector of nature, so much so that he was considered one of the first environmentalists in history. He thus contributed to the establishment of various national parks and in 1892 founded the Sierra Club, which today is one of the most important US environmental associations. He died in Los Angeles in 1914. He has written several books in which he demonstrates his love for nature, books that are still read all over the world.

✱ Read a book where nature conservation is important OR
✱ Read a book whose title begins with a letter present in SIERRA CLUB OR
✱ Read a book written by John Muir or any author with his first or last name (his author page and books can be found HERE

2. John Muir Trail
Trail-SM
The John Muir Trail is 340 km (211 miles) long and runs throughout California, crossing five protected areas. It takes about three weeks to travel the entire route, usually from north to south. For more than two thirds of the way the John Muir Trail coincides with the Pacific Crest Trail, which runs from the border of Mexico to Canada and is one of three major US long-distance hiking trails. It is best to follow the John Muir trail in the period between July and September, given the altitudes reached.

✱ Read a book set in California OR
✱ Read a book set in summer OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first and last initials are found in JOHN MUIR TRAIL.

3. Travel Preparations
Bear-SM
Tackling this trail requires a certain organization: you must request permits months before departure and send food to various points along the way as it is impossible to carry all the necessary food along with you. In addition, you need the necessary equipment to camp (tent and sleeping bag) for three weeks. Speaking of food, you will need to have special containers to store it to prevent bears (and other animals, such as pumas) from deciding to feast at your expense, which could also be dangerous for you.

✱ Read a book with a camping scene on the cover or in the text (post cover or share text) OR
✱ Read a book where something is organized or where the MC usually makes to-do lists (briefly share how the book fulfills the task ) OR
✱ Read a book with a wild animal on the cover or in the text (post cover or share text).

4. Departure: Happy Isles (Yosemite NP)
Yosemite-Valley-2-SM
Happy Isles is a group of small isles in the Merced River in the easternmost part of Yosemite Valley. From here both the John Muir Trail and the Mist Trail begin: the latter leads to two of the park's most famous waterfalls, Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls. Before embarking on the John Muir Trail, many hikers try their hand at the ascent of Half Dome (a permit is required). During your journey you will find several signed paths that take you to other places of naturalistic interest; it might be a good idea to extend your trip to cover the ones that interest you most. Surely, before leaving, you should take a quick tour of Yosemite NP, taking advantage of the shuttle bus. Not to be missed are the sights of Yosemite Falls, El Capitan and Glacier Point. Protected since 1864, it became a national park in 1890, 18 years after Yellowstone.

✱ Read the first book in a series OR
✱ Read a book with a waterfall on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first and last initials are found in HAPPY ISLES.

5. Yosemite National Park
Nevada-Fall-SM
The first four days of hiking (or more if you decide to take any of the side trails) you will stay inside Yosemite National Park, moving soon to the wilder and less frequented area by tourists. The hike will take you to the Nevada Falls and then heads to Toulumne Meadows, where you will find a visitor center, a store and, if desired, a lodge to stay overnight. Here you can also participate in some of the activities offered by the rangers. From there, you will travel through Lyell Canyon, a really beautiful and pleasant valley to walk through. The ascent to the Donohue Pass, at the beginning of the fifth day of travel, is not to be underestimated. The pass marks the border with the Ansel Adams Wilderness.

✱ Read a book set in a US National Park (tell us where) OR
✱ Read a book you hope you will like (tell us how it turned out) OR
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK (three word minimum).

6. Ansel Adams Wilderness
Banner-Postpile-SM
Created in 1964 under the name of Minarets Wilderness, this area was renamed in 1984, after the death of Ansel Adams, an environmentalist made famous by his black and white photographs of American parks. Once you have passed the Donohue Pass, the trail will take you to an area full of lakes, one more beautiful than the other. After a couple of days you will arrive at Devil's Postpile National Monument, a dark cliff of columnar basalt protected since 1911. Given the facilities and places that can be visited in the area, you can think of spending a relaxing day here.

✱ Read a book with a photographer on the cover or in the text (post cover or share text) OR
✱ Read a book published with at least two different titles over the years (share titles) OR
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in ANSEL ADAMS WILDERNESS (three word minimum).

7. John Muir Wilderness
Lone-Indian-SM
The seventh day of walking will take you to the John Muir Wilderness, protected since 1964, where you will spend another 4-5 days in a landscape full of lakes; in particular you can spend a whole day exploring the nearby Edison Lake. Take advantage of this day of rest, as you will have to overcome two passes during your stay in the John Muir Wilderness. Also keep in mind that after the last stop in this wilderness area you will have to face about ten days in which you will not find any facilities along the way.

✱ Read a book set on the shores of a lake OR
✱ Read a book with 1, 9, 6 or 4 in the number of pages (tell us how many pages) OR
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in JOHN MUIR WILDERNESS (three word minimum).

8. Kings Canyon National Park
Kings-Canyon-NP-SM
If all went according to plan, on your 11th day of hiking, you will enter Kings Canyon National Park. Founded in 1890 with the name of General Grant NP, in 1940 it was later enlarged and renamed for the wide valley of glacial origin. After the first day and a half of an easy walk, you will tackle the trail's most famous pass, also named Muir. Keep in mind that from here to the end of the trip, days of “rest” along various watercourses will alternate with others in which you will face different passes to climb.

✱ Read a book written by an author who has more than one pen name (tell us what they are) OR
✱ Read a book where the MC has to overcome an obstacle (be creative and tell us what the obstacle is) OR
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in KING CANYON NATIONAL PARK (three word minimum).

9. Sequoia National Park
General-Sherman-Tree
On the 18th day, the Forester Pass will take you to the contiguous Sequoia National Park. Created in 1890, it owes its name to the giant trees that also cover the nearby Kings Canyon NP. The two parks are administered as if they were a unit and in 1976 UNESCO included them among the biosphere reserves. Redwoods grow to an height of 95 m (311 ft) and it seems that they can live up to 2,200 years!

✱ Read a book with a tree on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book with an elderly character (does not have to be the MC) OR
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in SEQUOIA NATIONAL PARK (three word minimum).

10. Arrival: Mt. Whitney
Mount-Whitney-SM
The trail ends on the summit of Mt. Whitney; the mountain's west slope is in Sequoia National Park whereas the east slope is in the Inyo National Forest. At 4,421 meters of altitude (14,505 feet) it is the tallest mountain in the continental United States. Of course, you won't be able to stay overnight on top of the mountain; you will have to descend to a trail camp, and the next day (the 21st of hiking) descend to Whitney Portal, the way out of the park.

✱ Read a book in the top 10 of your TBR (sorted any way) OR
✱ Read a book with a mountain on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first and last initials are found in MOUNT WHITNEY.

Of course, you won't be able to stay overnight on top of the mountain; you will have to descend to a trail camp, and the next day (the 21st of hiking) descend to Whitney Portal, the way out of the park.

0/10

1. John Muir

Whitney

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 349 comments Cool, I've read two books where this guy was mentioned in the last quarter - the book about US National Parks I recommended to you & in one about a small town in Alaska. Aparently he was so in awe of Alaska's beauty he recommended young people not to go there because afterwards no other place will appear worth visiting or they won't be able to leave.
WOW several of his works are available for free as part of the Guttenberg Project - got all of them!

Iconic Trail: John Muir Trail
February 1, 2021 - May 31, 2021

10
of 10 Complete

🏕 1. John Muir
✱ Read a book whose title begins with a letter present in SIERRA CLUB
Something About You - Julie James - 4/4/21

🏕 2. John Muir Trail
✱ Read a book set in California
Find Me - Anne Frasier - 2/4/21

🏕 3. Travel Preparations
✱ Read a book with a wild animal on the cover or in the text (post cover or share text).
Winter Study - Nevada Barr - 4/3/21
Winter Study (Anna Pigeon, #14) by Nevada Barr

🏕 4. Departure: Happy Isles (Yosemite NP)
✱ Read the first book in a series
The Scent of Murder - Kylie Logan - 2/7/21 - #1 Jazz Ramsey

🏕 5. Yosemite National Park
✱ Read a book set in a US National Park (tell us where)
Free Fire - C.J. Box - 2/16/21 - set in Yellowstone National Park

🏕 6. Ansel Adams Wilderness
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in ANSEL ADAMS WILDERNESS (three word minimum).
Sleep Well, My Lady - Kwei Quartey - 4/11/21 - SWML

🏕 7. John Muir Wilderness
✱ Read a book with 1, 9, 6 or 4 in the number of pages (tell us how many pages)
The Clue of the Whistling Bagpipes - Carolyn Keene - 2/13/21 - orig pub 1964

🏕 8. Kings Canyon National Park
✱ Read a book written by an author who has more than one pen name (tell us what they are)
Murder, Handcrafted - Isabella Alan - 2/18/21 - also writes as Amanda Flower

🏕 9. Sequoia National Park
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in SEQUOIA NATIONAL PARK (three word minimum).
The Lieutenant's Nurse - Sara Ackerman - 2/10/21 - TLN

🏕 10. Arrival: Mt. Whitney
✱ Read a book in the top 10 of your TBR (sorted any way)
The Saffron Gate - Linda Holeman - 4/8/21 - #2 Sorted by Date Added
