Regarding Stan Walkers book - I'm wondering if it is not eligible because he used a ghost writer.
From the Ockham rules
The principal author(s) must be the major contributor(s) of the book being submitted, with at least
50 percent input. Publishers must clearly define the 50 percent of the work which has been written
by the principal author(s).

Aaaaaannnnnddd the shortlist is out & I want to read nearly all of them!
Best looking list I have seenin years Just some of the non- fiction (but I'm loving the illustrated non-fiction) doesn't excite me too much.
I'm going to go into my library to see if they are going to buy any of the poetry books.

Hi Rita
The Ockhams are a New Zealand book award. I would really like to just have discussion about them in this thread.
Could you delete your post & post about any books you have just finished in this thread? https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I really want to read Nothing to See by Pip Adam. Might see if I can get it at the libs...would be tempted to buy but I'm really not a fan over the cover and as vain as it might sound, I only buy books I really want to read and that will look nice on my shelves lol

Thanks for your reply Erica!
I'm interested in all four of the fiction books, but my local library has the Adams & Chidgey ones, so I am most likely to read them.

I've got Sorrow and Bliss on reserve at the library which I'm excited about. Also keen to try Victory Park
From the longlist for poetry, I have
sitting on my bedroom table.
Love the cover & hope to get to this one soon!

I am loving this one! The winner & the shortlist must be absolutely exceptional to have beaten it.
In the general way, I just can't read poetry quickly - I want to savour it.
I'm hoping to get back to Magnolia soon.

If anyone wants to sample poems from the shortlist...

I have to say that the fragment Spinoff has featured from Powles is weaker than the other poems written by her. But I'm not a fan of fragments.

Books mentioned in this topic
Goddess Muscle (other topics)Goddess Muscle (other topics)
Hiakai: Modern Māori Cuisine (other topics)
Magnolia, 木蘭 (other topics)
Good write up on Spinoff - what are everyone's thoughts.
For me - just about everything in the Illustrated Non Fiction category looks good, in particular Hiakai: Modern Māori Cuisine which is already on one of my to-read lists
In poetry - I have started Magnolia, 木蘭 & enjoyed the one poem I have read. I may even buy this one.
I'm going to look to see if my local library has any of the other poetry selections, but their buying on non fiction & probably poetry seems to be well down. I expect COVID related.
