This is my first Kristin Hannah book and I'm pretty excited about it. Everyone seems to love her books.
I have read this and enjoyed it immensely although not quite as much as the Nightingale! It is harrowing and I thought the ending could have been different.
I want to read this one. The only reason I've hesitated is because the plot reminds me of Steinbeck, who I cannot stand! But Kristin Hannah is a very different writer. I'll get to it soon. In the meantime, I'm loving hearing about it. I like harrowing books. I don't know how anything could be more harrowing than THE PROPHETS, though, but I shall see.Thank you.
I'm half way through, and yes, total Grapes of Wrath vibes. I happen to love Steinbeck. Not sure what directions it's going yet. Either you work hard and persevere and things will work out? Or is it going to end darker?I'm just about to start the section 1936 and all I can think is, oh Elsa, how are you going to get out of this!

I think I'm going to like reading this book.
Glad to have your reaction. Thank you. :)
Finished. Really enjoyed it.I want a spin off book with Rose and Tony! I really missed them in the second half of the book but understand that Elsa's development needed her to go out on her own.
Loved the scene with Elsa taking a bat into the hospital! So great!
As sad as the last couple of chapters are, I think the ending with Loreda was simple and beautiful. Going to college in California. Returning to the state that caused her so much pain and suffering. That opened her eyes to the hardships and injustices of the world. She returns to pursue her mother's dream, to be the first woman in their family to attend college and to achieve the better life that Elsa wanted for her family.
Perseverance and determination.
My first Kristin Hannah novel and I really enjoyed it. I also wish we had more Tony and Rose! I would read another novel all about them. I also want to read The Grapes of Wrath now. I read part of it in high school and hated it back then but I don’t think I really understood what was going on.
I loved The Great Alone more but her ability to put you in the time period and the research blew my mind.
My book came in so I'm going to read this some time this month. As I was looking at my loot yesterday. I noticed that this book doesn't have the BTM Logo on it as some of the others I have purchased from the club. Does anyone know why that is? Some have the logo and some don't. I personally like the logo on the books. It makes it seem like a collection. I usually keep them together but those that don't have the logo get separated, and I don't like that but I'm a little OCD, either you have it or you don't.
FINISHED You guys were right on this one. It was a very good read. Gave it a 5.
I wonder tho, if the looser (husband) ever made it to California?
And Why did her family dislike her so much?
I ordered this as an add- on for February and was able to read it in March - definitely one of my favorites from Kristin Hannah! I loved the entire story. I laughed and cried and then hugged it to my chest at the end; I didn't want to put it down! Hannah has a rare ability to put her reader right in the midst of the drama; I literally felt filth and pain while reading it. Sooo good! And agreed- more Rose and Tony please! They are incredible characters.
