Top Read

Deacon King Kong - James McBride
Set during the late sixties in Brooklyn, I found this to be a very enjoyable listening experience because of the great characters and engaging plot. The audio narration by Dominic Hoffman was very good.

Good Reads

Black Skies - Arnaldur Indriðason
Just because the lead character is off in a unknown location, crime does not stop in Iceland so one of Erlendur's colleagues Sigurður Óli takes the lead in this book. The plot uses the Icelandic banking crisis as a backdrop and was quite interesting. Listened to the audio version which was narrated by the always stellar George Guidall.

The Miseducation of Evie Epworth - Matson Taylor
Lots of humor, great characters, and an engrossing first person narrative made this book, featuring a young woman in Yorkshire in the early sixties, a fun read.

Last Car to Elysian Fields - James Lee Burke
While trying to overcome two recent personal tragedies, Dave looks into the disappearance of a Blues Singer from back in the fifties along with trying to help an old friend from New Orleans who is an activist priest. Dark and depressing but at least Clete is around for some mayhem. Listened to the audio version which was narrated by Mark Hammer in his last performance in this series.

Our Last Season: A Writer, a Fan, a Friendship - Harvey Araton
Longtime sports journalist recounts his friendship with a New York Knicks superfan, who always sat in the front row behind the team bench, with humor and empathy.

OK Read

The Talented Miss Farwell - Emily Gray Tedrowe
Based on a true story, this fictionalized version seemed to just skim the surface of what could have been a fascinating look at obsession and what some people will do. Not a bad book and I did find the last half fairly intense but never really connected with the characters or the plot.

Sandi: nice month! I always enjoy your summaries. Totally agree on the enjoyment of reading Deacon King Kong where I read it previously, then enjoyed it again through the group read discussion.

Ooh, George Guidall! There was a time when it seems all the books I listened to were read by him. Maybe I'll hunt this series down just to get reacquainted with him.

I’m reading Robicheax in order after skipping many oover the years. All good, most kinda depressing.

Yeah. Definitely not re-read material. I took a break and have a couple left to get back to.
