And would you be interested in joining a sci-fi DSA reading group?

Thinking of starting with an Octavia Butler work but not sure which one.

All suggestions welcome!

Can other factions of Leftism join?

And I would think that Star Trek would HAVE to be required reading. It's literally Fully Automated Luxury Space Communism ;)

Alison A | 14 comments Thanks for asking! I think I’m not as into Sci Fi so I wouldn’t opt in, but I hope you find a group! :)

Yes, absolutely! Our DSA chapter spans the gamut from democratic socialists to MLs.

Michael | 2 comments I've been meaning to get into Octavia Butler - I'd be happy to participate as well, assuming the offer is still open ~

As far as a suggestion goes, maybe Parable of the Sower? It's a dystopic novel that takes place in a future experiencing collapse due to catastrophic climate change and socio-economic inequality. Seems maybe, sort of, perhaps relevant to contemporary developments that fall within the scope of discussion for this group.

Margaret Atwood explores similar topics in her MaddAddam trilogy. I've read the first one and I recommend it, but it's pretty dark and I assume the trend continues sharply in subsequent books.

Definitely update us if you plan on going forward w/ the reading group.

Jamie Boyd | 1 comments Skye City: the Trials of Arturo collection by R.D Hale is excellent by a great leftist author.
I would highly recommend.

Hey comrades! If anyone is interested, I lead a DSA sci-fi reading group that meets every other Sunday at 6pm. Our next meeting is 5/30 to discuss Annihilation. If you're interested in joining this meeting or any future ones, please fill out this interest form so I can get you plugged in! https://forms.gle/BvgpZx6CVbKjUKpG6

Dylan Chuang | 1 comments Books by Cixin Liu or the Remembrance of earth's past is pretty good. (Don't know if it is leftist, but still pretty good books, correct me if I'm wrong.)
