NB this has been shelved family drama 9 times and definitely fits :)
At first this almost felt like one of the 21st century y/a formulas, but this novel was so much more and the writing is quite good. The characters are strong for y/a and believable for their ages. Acevedo has done her research into areas that aren't her experience (eg being a teen mother in high school) but is also writing what she knows re: culture.
Plus, Emoni is a foodie, and while I can't say I was cooking as young as she was or that I am the super-genius cooking, I could relate to someone who likes to tweak recipes, relates to herbs by smell, makes up recipes, etc.
While I am not sure if I will read her other books now that I am reading less y/a, but she is definitely a strong author and I can see why she won an award for another book of hers.
