The theory behind this claim is that over thousands of years the human immune system has adapted to cope with widespread parasite infections, and now that these have been virtually wiped-out in the West, our immune systems are unbalanced.

This concerns asthma, diabetes, heart disease, dementia, and other age related illnesses.

Interestingly, lower rates of inflammageing-related disease have been identified in areas where helminth infection is common.

"For instance in Eastern India, the worms have been found to prevent rheumatoid arthritis. Epidemiological studies have also shown helminths protect against type 2 diabetes and blocked arteries."

It might be possible to isolate the proteins the worms supply and put the proteins into pills.

Not for me, thanks.
However, a study in Scotland provided evidence that the body developed to fight internal parasites, and when there are none, this can result in the immune system turning on the body, causing Crohn's disease. Autoimmune issues might generally benefit from similar studies.
