In Amity beach, Long island a swimmer named Chrissie Watkins is eaten by a shark. Police chief Martin Brody locates her remains and identifies the situation as a shark attack. He asks the mayor Larry Vaughn to close the beaches but he refuses. A few days later a child and a senior are killed by the same shark. A man named Ben Gardner is also killed leading Brody and to find his abandoned boat riddled with bite marks. Local reporter Meadows then recruits Matt Hooper from the oceanographic institution while Brody hires Quint, a professional shark hunter. On Quint's boat the Orca they aren't able to spot the shark for a few days and quarrel because of their personalities. On the third day after spotting the 25-foot shark Hooper gets into a shark cage and tries to kill it but is eaten alive. The next day the shark attacks to boat and tears the aft section which causes the Orca to sink. Quint harpoons it multiple times but is caught by the harpoon's ropes and is dragged into the water by Jaws. Brody is about to be eaten but the shark succumbs to it's wounds and sinks. Brody then swims back to shore.
I will give this book 4\5 stars for its originality, suspense, and characters. In some ways it's better than the movie because of its extra sub-plots (did not include in summary). But the movie included moments that were better than the book like where the characters enjoyed each other's company (which I liked).
