Oh, I love the Dear Authors series! One of my favorite places to go for baseline rules.

Yes! It gives really good advice. It seems like authors often have very differing opinions and readers are the more important audience.

soooo im having a really hard time coming up with a backstory for one of my characters. some context:
-his name is fallon
-17
-no living family
-the book starts off in bordeaux france but they (my mc’s; brynn and fallon) might travel throughout
-helps brynn kill the maire (mayor)
-enemies to lovers between brynn and fallon
-planning on it being a standalone
i’ve been trying for like an hour and i can’t get a backstory or any motives behind him.

also i’ve been debating making it historical fantasy instead of historical fiction

hmmmmm well if you're looking for suggestions then maybe something to do with arson? or a house fire that killed his family?

i’ve also been thinking. brynn has this ability to change her face but everytime she does her “soulmate” gets closer to dying. i’m planning on ending the book with fallon dying cause he eventually fell for her and he was that person, but i was considering letting fallon know about the curse so he never lets himself love anyone. (he would know that his love interest kills him so he never lets himself fall in love)

@firefly about the fire, thanks for the idea but i don’t think that’s what i’m looking for. i kind of want fallon to either have run away or has family died. idk rly
