Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 220 comments Spring is time of new life, spring cleaning, in some cultures start of a new year. Than I thought about the fact in the southern hemisphere it's autums but even there it fits with the beginning of school.

I ask you to check your book shelves or e-readers and see what new authors, new series, new genres or anything new is lurking there and looking good to you.
I'm very curious what you'll share with us.

Susan's Reviews (suel2016) The Light Through the Leaves by Glendy Vanderah

The Pastel Effect by Arly Carmack

The Captive by Fiona King Foster

These are just a few of the books/arcs that blew me away recently.

Wow all of these look great and I added The Light Through the Leaves by Glendy Vanderah to my Amazon watch list.
I'm still thinking about The Captive by Fiona King Foster - despite the 'noir' & 'dystropian' labels. Is it dystropian similar to The Handmaid's Tale due to an alternate (and today unthinkable) history development leading to a very different form of government (usually some kind of totalitarian or fundamentalistic regime) or the more usual form that's rather bleak (often combined with post apocalyptic elements) where the world is very much destroyed and people have to deal with famine/diseases/ecological or other kind of catastrophe on top of the human factor?

Sarah B | 264 comments I've read a few new authors already since the beginning of the month for March. Two books I'm reading right now include:

Devolution A Firsthand Account of the Rainier Sasquatch Massacre by Max Brooks Devolution: A Firsthand Account of the Rainier Sasquatch Massacre .... I've just started this one and 46 pages in the volcano has already blown it's top! So far no sasquatch yet but I'm sure they will be showing up, maybe soon? One sad thing in here is the one family (husband and wife) had just moved to this isolated little town near Mount Rainier just before this happened! Now that is bad luck..the book also was saying how the ground would shake or jump at random times because of the nearby volcano. Scary!! Of course I like creature stories but I find stuff about volcanoes interesting too....just as long as a real one isn't anywhere near me! In reality they are way too frightening. And I am.a major coward.

And

Witches of Ash and Ruin by E. Latimer Witches of Ash and Ruin this is the other book I'm reading right now and I'm about 30 percent through it. This one pulled me in right away. It's a fascinating story about a coven of two witches who have gotten together in this town and at the same time a group of 3 serial killers have come to town as they hunt + kill witches. Of course the cops are clueless!

So far I like both of these...

In March I have also read:

Lustlocked (Sin du Jour, #2) by Matt Wallace I didn't like this one although the Cyclura on the cover is cute! The story itself was very weird and boring. I don't think I'll read anything else by this author.

Rain Reign by Ann M. Martin this was another new author to me and I loved this book. It's a story about a single father who is raising a daughter who has Asperger's. And how she loses her dog, Rain, during a hurricane. A great story that I really got hooked on and read really quickly.

The Price Guide to the Occult by Leslye Walton another new author to me and I found this one dull too. Didn't like it really.

Next I will probably read Baggage Confessions of a Globe-Trotting Hypochondriac by Jeremy Hance as that book is going to be due soon at the library. I'm hoping to get to it on Sunday, presuming I can finish Devolution and Witches of Ash & Ruin on Saturday.

I've read lots of other new authors in January and February too.

Oh and a new genre I'm going to try reading is westerns. Because I like horses. I have ordered a few from the library for this one challenge called Giant Panda and I'm going to read two westerns for the one part of it: a book with a black cover and one with a brown cover.. because somehow I've gotten hooked on doing these challenges.. and the other day I spent some time researching the subgenres of that genre too...to find out what are the subgenres??

Oh and that Baggage book is like a travel book? So I guess that's a new genre too...it's like someone writing about their trip.

Thank you.
Two of the books you mentioned caught my interest unfortunately Rain Reign by Ann M. Martin isn't available as ebook (at least not in Germany) and I have no more space for books at home (actually I have to give away most of my paper books because of that) & Baggage Confessions of a Globe-Trotting Hypochondriac by Jeremy Hance is way too expensive. Have you looked further into Jeremy Hance (author or the second book - travel memoir is usually the name of the genre)? He's written another non-fiction book I think you'll find interesting: Life is Good Conservation in an Age of Mass Extinction by Jeremy Hance Life is Good: Conservation in an Age of Mass Extinction

Thanks. I think sometimes I get sidetracked by these issues I have. I was to the allergist on Monday and still didn't get anywhere really.. all of this stuff can be hard to deal with. I just hope the ranch reopens soon...

I am sure the ranch will open soon. I think this country is getting towards the end of COVID-19. Enjoy Reading, 📚

That's sad you had to give away most of your books. But they do take lots of room.. hopefully you were able to keep any favorite ones you might have had..

And no I haven't looked at his other books yet. I still hope to read Baggage tomorrow if I can finish this Witches book. I did finish the Sasquatch one, which actually turned out to be very good! It wasn't corny at all and it took the subject very seriously. Lots of action. I would also have to check if my library has the other book you mentioned.

You might be interested in some of these other new authors I have read recently:

From February:

Death by Dumpling (A Noodle Shop Mystery, #1) by Vivien Chien this was a fun book and the first one in a series. I'll read the others once I get caught up with the books I have on hand now from the library...

Pegasus (Pegasus, #1) by Robin McKinley I really enjoyed the mental communication in here between the girl and her pegasus Ebon. Gee, I even remember his name from February 5! She was supposed to write two more books in this series but then something happened and she didn't.

The Case of the Orphaned Bassoonists (Cassandra Reilly, #4) by Barbara Wilson this was another new author to me but I found this tale very boring actually...

Haunted Summerwind A Ghostly History of a Wisconsin Mansion (Haunted America) by Devon Bell a bit interesting as it's in my state but also kind of boring too...

Quantum (Captain Chase #1) by Patricia Cornwell this was pretty good and I heard there is a sequel out...

The Cannibal Galaxy by Cynthia Ozick found this boring...

The Obsidian Tower (Rooks and Ruin, #1) by Melissa Caruso I did enjoy this one.

One Half from the East by Nadia Hashimi this was my first book by this author and I loved it! It's set in Afghanistan and I do love stories from a kid's viewpoint. Just recently I read a second book by the author to complete the popsugar challenge category of "book by a muslim author".

The Lost City of Terror by Jethro Wegener a fun adventure story set in the jungle. With giant insects.. 🕷️🕸️🕷️

The Dark Matter of Mona Starr by Laura Lee Gulledge this graphic novel is about anxiety and has tips on how to deal with it..

Mosquito Man by Jeremy Bates another great creature story.

Still Life with Tornado by A.S. King very weird but good too. It's weird because it has some quantum mechanics in the plot. I liked it.

The Siren by Kiera Cass this was a great tale and for the February Scavenger challenge.

I Believe in a Thing Called Love by Maurene Goo another new author. I think this was trying to be funny but I really didn't see it that way. Kind of boring actually.

Dreadful Company (Dr. Greta Helsing, #2) by Vivian Shaw this was interesting and I read it fast too. I'll probably read the other 2 books in the series soon...

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman while I did like this I think I could relate to the main character too much and it actually made me have disturbing dreams for 3 nights in a row...

An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson this was truly fantastic! Love the story about faeries.

10 Notoriously Cursed Items Mysteries Behind Cursed Items From Around The World (How Bizarre Book 8) by Roman Miller this was ok but also kind of boring really...

Across the Nightingale Floor (Tales of the Otori, #1) by Lian Hearn this was pretty boring too...

The Whispers of War by Julia Kelly to my surprise I actually loved this WW2 book! Didn't expect that at all. I think it's because it's set in London and shoes things from a very different perspective. And that makes the story totally different.

Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust hated this! Too much abuse in here!

Monster, She Wrote The Women Who Pioneered Horror and Speculative Fiction by Lisa Kröger group read but boring really!

Big Lies in a Small Town by Diane Chamberlain Ioved this one! Wonderful story!

The Sol Majestic by Ferrett Steinmetz another great one! Also very unique too.

The Lantern Men (Ruth Galloway #12) by Elly Griffiths I was going to use this as a Pretty Cover book but didn't. The story turned out pretty boring anyway.

Gravity is Heartless (The Heartless Series, #1) by Sarah Lahey my chosen Pretty Cover book.. this was ok but not great.

Winter of the Crystal Dances (Whinnies on the Wind, Book 1) by Angela Dorsey I do plan to read more in this series. 🐎

Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk I ended up loving this! I do think the main character is on the spectrum..has autism. Or she acts that way anyway. It's very similar to Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens as nature and wildlife is a big part of the story. Except it has a murderous twist! And I didn't see that twist coming at all..

So now these are the new authors I read last month. And only read 4 books by authors I already knew. 7 of the books in February were published in 2020.

They are waiting to get the paperwork back from the state..the team I work with at the ranch thought it would be open by the end of January but it wasn't..and not seeing the horses is having an affect all right.. and I certainly miss George and Oliver and Santana. That's Oliver on the little picture there. The person running the program changed so the new person - who owns the ranch by the way - sent in the paperwork. But everything is so super slow because of the virus.

And that Jasper is very fresh! He'll follow right behind you and kiss you one on the cheek with his fuzzy muzzle! He doesn't know about personal space. He's a gelding. But Santana is the alpha in his tiny herd. He gets jealous and will chase Jasper away as he wants all the grooming. And boy, was he ever a mess back in autumn!! Totally covered in burdock burrs and those other tiny things! Owe! A nightmare!! You'd clean him and come back next week to see him totally covered again!! I bet that Santana was going into those weeds by the trees on purpose just to get that stuff in his mane! What a naughty boy! And out of the 3 geldings in his group, he was the worst when it came to being covered in those things!

Sarah B | 264 comments Other new authors I'm going to read soon are:

Winterwood (Rowankind, #1) by Jacey Bedford

The Burning Girls by C.J. Tudor

Skyhunter (Skyhunter, #1) by Marie Lu

The Vorrh by Brian Catling .... I don't know why but the title search never works for this book. I always get red error saying search is not working! So I have to do the author search.

Silver City A Novel of the American West by Jeff Guinn + Buffalo Trail A Novel of the American West (Cash McLendon, #2) by Jeff Guinn

And I think you know I'm going to read The Outside (The Outside, #1) by Ada Hoffmann . . Probably in the next few days.

I did look at the library and they don't have the other book by the author who wrote Baggage Confessions of a Globe-Trotting Hypochondriac by Jeremy Hance I really enjoyed this book. I learned what OCD is and it's amazing how he could travel to such places with the anxiety! He mentioned 7 national parks he had visited plus other places too. And he really loves rhinos and the hoatzin. Very much into ecology and he believes that humans need nature for their mental health. Unfortunately we are wrecking the natural world at a crazy pace. Hmmm...maybe amazon has his other book...

I see you signed up for the penguin challenge.. 🐧

For the book that GR has issues to find try next time The Vorrh (Catling), The Vorrh (The Vorrh Trilogy #1) or ASIN/ISBN of a different edition.

1. Search for B00N6PEPSO (ASIN or any other variation) to get (book:The Vorrh|25301694) - I replaced the edgy brakets with the round so you'll see the entire book link in plain text here
2. replace the book ID with 22889834 (book ID is the last part of the book link - you find the book ID in the url line in your browser: for this one it's www. goodreads. com /book/show/22889834.The_Vorrh).
3. save in your book notes B00N6PEPSO & 22889834 so you don't always have to search for it (you can access notes either via the review mask or in your shelves if you add notes in settings)

Yes, you'll find Life is Good: Conservation in an Age of Mass Extinction on Amazon and it's around $4.

Sarah B | 264 comments Thanks for the advice and tips. 😁

Why is this thread / topic always hidden when I come here to the group? It could be why this group doesn't have any activity? Because each time I come here I have to click on the wee tiny text that says "see all topics" or something along those lines to see it... people may not know this thread even is here.

Sarah B | 264 comments Well it seems to be fixed now. And I've read more books by new authors, including:

The Outside (The Outside, #1) by Ada Hoffmann - absolutely LOVED this!

The Six-Gun Tarot (Golgotha, #1) by R.S. Belcher loved this too!

The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger I never read this before so it was new to me and I did enjoy it.

The Golden West by Louis L'Amour - all 3 authors in this anthology were new to me

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender another new author I had liked.

Buffalo Trail A Novel of the American West (Cash McLendon, #2) by Jeff Guinn new author but I didn't like this one at all!

Kabloona by Gontran De Poncins new to me and I enjoyed this old memoir . Very fascinating! They actually ate frozen fish and meat and it kept them warm somehow!? Amazing!!

The Vorrh by Brian Catling new and never again! Awful! 😛

Wayside School Is Falling Down (Wayside School #2) by Louis Sachar this was really weird!

Winterwood (Rowankind, #1) by Jacey Bedford I'm reading this right now and enjoying it .

Sarah B | 264 comments I do have a lot more new authors lined up that I'll be reading soon. I'm doing lots of challenges so that means lots of books. Unfortunately I was glutened the other day and that makes me very sleepy. 😴
