Elli couldn't pretend she wasn't the tiniest bit intimidated by the cavernous roof and empty floors of the mall. Sure, when she was younger, she'd been to places like this, but there were always people, with her and around her.
She felt bad about stealing things from the booths, but, as she reminded herself, they were all lone-gone. And anyway, most things had already been looted. Her feet clacking loudly on the concrete, Elli continued her search for something salvageable.
Elli spun around. She was sure she'd heard something in one of the stalls around her. She stopped moving, and listened again. All she could hear was her own breathing, and - Elli was pretty certain there was someone else in the mall with her. There was the sound of something, maybe breathing or shuffling, coming from somewhere, and Elli knew it couldn't just be her hearing things.
"Hello?" she called, wincing as her voice echoed around the mall. If someone was anywhere near her, good or bad, they'd know she was here now.
Elli relaxed. The girl was a mutant, and probably wasn't going to hurt her. She'd been really worried for a few seconds - setting the mall on fire would help her escape, sure, but at the same time the blaze would have been seen for miles. Elli's only escape plan (she couldn't think of any others) was pretty pointless. At least she didn't have to use it, the girl standing in front of her probably wasn't capable of doing much more that turning the lights on and off or activating a cash register.
"No, no, it's OK." Elli said, waving her hand in front of her - a gesture that wouldn't have been seen very well, given the current lighting situation. Pausing for a second, Elii held her hand out in front of her an concentrated. She watched as small ball of fire burst into life on her palm. The light coming off from it was weak, and cast strange shadows on the murky walls.
"I'm Elli," she said, holding out her hand (the one that wasn't on fire. It may not have hurt Elli, but it sure as hell would hurt the girl).
"I'm, uh, a mutant, like you, I guess," she said, leaving her hand hanging in the air and hoping it would be shaken. Elli really didn't want that to happen again.
