E Z W (savebees) | 1 comments I know that this book is not categorized as MG, but I think it can be read by the MG age range. It was a relaxing and peaceful read for me. My 10 and 7yo (who are very sensitive to an array of topics) really enjoyed reading this one too.

What similar books do you recommend that are marketed as adult literary fiction, but kids can enjoy. I am specifically looking for books that are not traditionally found in the MG/YA section. No drama, no sex, no violence. Animals a plus.

Thank you!

Sandy Brehl (sandybrehl) | 39 comments My absolute fave for reading aloud to kids with that age and personality would be the entire series of James Herriot books:
ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL, ALL THINGS BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL, ALL THINGS WISE ANAD WONDERFUL, andTHE LORD GOD MADE THEM ALL. These were originally several decades ago, and he had more titles, too, plus some picture book adaptations of single chapters. The series was on PBS for 8-12? years, then a long gap. Currently it has been recast and is going super well, on Sunday nights.
Can't recommend this highly enough.

Consider/check out THE TROUBLE WITH GOATS AND SHEEP by Joanna Cannon (I loved the book, but it has been a bit- although I did not mark reminders to myself about anything involving language or sex).
They might also enjoy hearing you read FASTEST THINGS ON WINGS: Rescuing Hummingbirds in Hollywood, nonfiction memoir by a licensed wildlife rehabilitation worker in California. From my own time doing that work I can attest that it is thoroughly authentic and breathtaking. That, too, has been a while. As I recall, she alternates chapters about the birds and her own life, so its possible you could simply share the chapters about the bird work. Well written and utterly compelling!
Hope some of that helps.
