This story always scared me. I've had dreams before where I wake up with a pendulum swinging over my chest, and i am screaming for help, and trying to figure out how to get out of this. My dad used to be in the dream laughing at me, telling me how I was too stupid to figure it out. That was truly scary!.

Franky I just finished watching The Raven with John Cusack and the one scene where the killer uses this story as his "inspiration"...wow..that was quite brutal.

Yeah, this story uses quite a bit of dark psychological elements, doesn't it? Mental and physical torture. It is in our 11th grade literature book. Very deep story, one where we see the horrors of these tortures through the narrator's eyes. I like how the narrator lays out his prison and describes it so you can literally see it...even though it is in the dark.

Franky, are you a teacher?

This is truly one of the most agonizing POE stories.Whenever I read it, I feel the narrator's pain.

Franky Yes, I am. I've read this story countless times...I still see him being dragged from court...drugged....trying to navigate in the dark...the water..etc.
