James | 29 comments Howdy all. One sub-genre or setting for horror that I love is the secret lab or Prison. I love stories where something sinister is being studied or held in a lab or even a prison setting and then, surprise surprise, escapes to reign carnage down on those quirky doctors, scientists, or random innocent observers. However I don’t have much luck finding a lot of books like this. Would you all have any suggestions?

Examples of the kind of books and a couple movies would be...

Leviathan By James Byron Huggins (what an awesome first name)

Holes in the Ground By J.A. Konrath

*Edit: another book is -
Coldbrook by Tim Lebbon

Similar movies would be Cabin in the Woods, Resident Evil.

Thanks.

I have a couple of others but the titles are not coming to me!

James | 29 comments Ohh, good rec. Thank you. That was a good book. I can’t believe I didn’t think of it for an example.

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin | 2262 comments I love some Resident Evil but my brain blanked at your question 🤣😂🤷🏻‍♀️

message 5: by James (new)

James | 29 comments Yeah it’s hard to think of these isn’t it?

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin | 2262 comments Yep! Probably if you hadn’t asked I could have thought of a bunch 😏

Karen (hmssparky) | 201 comments I have this on my TBR pile, but haven't read it yet; it's the first book in a 2-book (so far) series:
The Kielder Strain (The Kielder Experiment #1) by Rebecca Fernfield by Rebecca Fernfield

Let me know if you read & enjoy it--or not!

Vickie (bookfan4ever) Prison - Lockdown. This is a series.

James | 29 comments This sounds great! Thank you for the recommendation!! I just picked up The Kiedler Strain and will start it tonight.

message 10: by James (new)

James | 29 comments The last comment was at Karen. Vickie thank you that was a great suggestion too. I read the first book in the series I need to read the others.

You're welcome. I will look through the rest of my TBR to see if there's anything else you might enjoy! (Give me a day or two, LOL!)

Not exactly as described above, but in a similar vein to King's The Institute is Josh Malerman's Inspection.

message 13: by James (new)

James | 29 comments Thanks Alan, that sounds like an interesting one. I will have to check it out.

Krystal (krystallee6363) | 880 comments Kind of fits the hospital theme - The Ward. But its book 2 in a linked series - it can be read as a standalone but I appreciated it more after I'd read the first book, The Mall.

message 15: by James (new)

James | 29 comments Those both sound interesting. And there seems to be a third book called The New Girl . They look like they will be in my reading future.

Yep I've read all three, and they are super bizarre but quite addictive!

message 17: by Shelly (new)

Shelly Campbell | 37 comments This one is a bit more sci-fi/horror, but The Way Out by Armand Boudreaux is a good prison escape/humans-turned-monster type of read.

Karen, this book is tough. I enjoyed it and didn't at the same time. I wrote a review and marked it for spoilers just because I'm never sure about what people consider a spoiler. Sometimes I want to know absolutely nothing about a book and sometimes I don't mind a little info. If you want to look at the review Here is the link

Overall I enjoyed the book but it did have its faults imo.

Not sure if these totally fit what you’re looking for, but they came to mind when I was trying to think of other suggestions :)

The Andromeda Strain (Andromeda, #1) by Michael Crichton

Prey by Michael Crichton

Thanks Michelle. I read The Andromeda Strain years ago. I haven't read Prey though.

message 22: by Doris (new)

Doris (webgeekstress) Not *exactly* what you're looking for, but if you want to break up your reading with some (mostly) lighthearted short stories in a similar vein, there's The Mad Scientist's Guide to World Domination: Original Short Fiction for the Modern Evil Genius

message 23: by James (new)

James | 29 comments Thanks for the recommendation Doris. I will check it out!

Timothy Taylor (tim_taylor) | 56 comments You could include Firestarter by Stephen King.

Also The Reach by Nate Kenyon

Both deal with characters having special powers with scientists trying to harness that power for sinister reasons.

message 25: by James (new)

James | 29 comments Ya know, I can't believe I've never read Firestarter. I've read so many Stephen King books. The Reach sounds really good.

Oddly enough, I've read over 50 King books and haven't read Firestarter either. It's available at my library and on my TBR now.

I remember liking The Reach. Nate Kenyon had a few good books back in the Leisure paperback publishing days. I hope you enjoy it.
