Ancient Historical Fiction discussion

Hello all,

I am a new YA author who has written one book with elements of ancient Roman culture and mythology -but because I was taking so many liberties with the subject matter, and using so many anachronisms, I deliberately created an alternate fantasy world so that no young readers would pick up erroneous facts. My editor, however, felt strongly that I should call it "Rome" since that's obviously what it's supposed to be.

It's a tough line to walk, and I wondered - do you think I made the right decision? I just didn't have the time to do months of extra research to get the tiny details right. I don't want to be irresponsible about it :)

Funnily enough, that's exactly the same decision I made! Besides adding magical elements, I just knew I'd spend much too much time in research, and not enough in actual writing
