Reading Lolita In Tehran is a rich, intimate look into the experiences of Azar Nafisi as a mother, friend, teacher, and woman in Iran. My favorite part about this memoir was the way Nafisi described both people and scenes. First, she is able to relate the distinct personalities of the women that she shares in a small reading group. Then, she describes scenes with a picture-like quality (although, maybe more like Harry Potter pictures that move too).
The memoir is broken out into different books/authors. Lolita, Gatsby, James, and Austen. I read this for a literature class, and one of our assignments was to pick books to divide our own lives into. This exercise made me appreciate this memoir all the more. To pick a book to help you relate to part of your story, you need to understand it deeply, but it also must be inseparable from the people and places you were with when you studied it.
