I continue to enjoy this authors mastery of word and metaphor more than I do her story which is, nevertheless, engaging enough. These are some of my favourites this week:'Somewhere, beyond the grey indecision of the rain and squalling clouds, was the island.'
'...his mouse ears with the sun shining through them...'
'..the strange, soft keening as if the wind from the south had left its icy, pre-dawn breath behind.'
'He imitated her, finger to lips, crooked as a winter twig.'
Chapter 7, the account of Louisa's escalating despair and isolation, is a wonderful piece of writing! Makes me proudly South African!
