Jade Michaelson (goodreadscomjmichaelson06) | 289 comments Fiction children's chapter book, read probably 1991-93.

A group of children probably in 2nd-3rd grade find a book in their school library that they are not allowed to check out. They decide to 'borrow' the book anyway, not really knowing much about it, more for the thrill of taking something they aren't supposed to.

They each take turns taking the thesaurus home with them, and it ends up helping them out with their individual issues, all of which I can't completely remember.

One child notices how dirty the sidewalks are in her neighborhood and the kids use the thesaurus to go on a protest march, made signs with words from the thesaurus.

Another girl wanted a dog and wrote a letter to her mom telling her why, using the thesaurus to find big words to explain why she thought she should have a dog.

Eventually they either give the book back or get caught with it. It was a cute book.

Mai | 1280 comments Maybe A Word to the Wise by Alison Cragin Herzig? It was published in 1982.
"The thesaurus stolen from their teacher alters the lives of eight fifth-graders in a special reading group."

Other reviews mention that they take it from the library even though they are not supposed to.
