April 1, 2021 - April 30, 2021

Meg is taking us on a tour of the capital of the Netherlands this month!
Amsterdam-Skyline-2
Amsterdam is the official capital of the Netherlands, though The Hague is the administrative capital and home to the government and courts. It's so picturesque
that it's like visiting an outdoor living museum.

✱ Amsterdam started as a small fishing village around year 1000, and went on to become one of of the most important ports in the world, as well as a leading center for finance and trade.
✱ The city was founded around 1250. Its name was derived from ‘Aeme Stelle Redamme’, which is Medieval Dutch for ‘Dam in a Watery Area’, in reference to the dam that was built in the Amstel river.
✱ It is known for its Golden Age canals, a historic and beautiful water network throughout the city. There are 165 canals and over 1000 bridges, with roughly 2500 houseboats scattered throughout.
✱ Cycling in Amsterdam is a way of life, made easier by the city’s unbeatable network of cycle routes and flat landscape. There are nearly as many bicycles in Amsterdam as its population!

Choose a level and enjoy your visit!

********************************************************************

Tasks:

1. Amsterdam Canal Ring
Canals-2-SM
In the early part of the 17th century, a comprehensive city plan was put together which initially included four main, concentric half-circles of canals with their ends resting on the IJ Bay. Three were lined with residences, while the fourth was used for defense and water management. These four canals collectively are called Grachtengordel. The plan also included a set of parallel canals primarily used for the transportation of goods. These waterways were interconnected by radiating canals, forming a fan shape. All told there are 165 canals, most planted with linden or elm trees from the beginning.

What is known as the Canal Ring consists of the four main canals plus six others, along with its 80 bridges. After sundown the bridges are lit up by fairy lights, and the whole area takes on a magical feel. In 2010 the Canal Ring was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List. In 2013, it celebrated its 400th birthday.

✱ Read a book with a water feature or bridge on the cover (share the cover) OR
✱ Read a book originally published in 2010 or 2013 (share publication date) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in AMSTERDAM CANAL RING.

2. Canal Houses
Amsterdam-Netherlands-dancing-houses-over-river-Amstel-landmark-in-old-european-city-spring-landscap
Amsterdam's famous Canal Ring is lined by gabled buildings which were originally residences, but today also include businesses, specialty museums, and dining and drinking establishments. Due to the old policy of taxing buildings by their width, the majority of these houses were built in a tall and skinny style. Because of the steepness
of the homes, hooks were affixed to the top of the houses to hoist furniture and goods up and through the windows, a tradition that is still employed today!

The narrowest house can be found at Oude Hoogstrasse 22 in the old city center. It is only 6'8" wide and 16'5" deep. The widest house is the Trippenhuis at Kloveniersburgwal 29, built in 1660 for brothers Lodewijk and Hendrick Trip. Its impressive neo-classical architecture mirrors that of an extremely narrow house across the street. As the story goes, the brothers commissioned the second house for their coachman after he remarked that he would be delighted with a house as wide as his masters’ front door.

In a quest for more sustainability and flexibility in architecture, the world’s first 3D-printed canal house is currently being constructed in Amsterdam-Noord. Exhibition, research area and building site in one, the house is open for the public to explore while it evolves.

✱ Read a book with a house on the cover, the quirkier the better (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in NARROW OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in CANAL HOUSES.

3. The Anne Frank House
Anne-Frank-Combo-SM
Along the Prinsengracht lies the house where diarist Anne Frank and her family hid from the Nazis for two years. They were joined later by the Van Pels family and Fritz Pfeffer. The building consisted of two parts: the main house and the annex, which was concealed behind a moveable bookcase. The eight people hid on the top floors of the annex. On August 4th, 1944, the hiding place was betrayed and the annex occupants were deported to various concentration camps. Only Anne's father, Otto Frank survived the war.

The house is now a thought-provoking and moving museum where, via quotes, photos, videos, and original items, visitors can absorb and understand the family's experiences, as well as reflect on the atrocities committed against the Jewish people during World War II. The walls of Anne Frank's room in the secret annex remain intact, with glued-on photos of movie stars and royalty. Her original red-checked diary that she received for her 13th birthday, along with other notebooks and loose pages, are viewable in the museum.

✱ Read a book set during a war (tell which which war) OR
✱ Read a book that contains a diary or journal entry (share text) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in THE ANNE FRANK HOUSE.

4. Museums of Amsterdam
Museum-Combo-SM
Some of the world's finest art museums can found be found in Amsterdam. The Rijksmuseum is a premier example, with works by local heroes Rembrandt, Vermeer
and Frans Hals. More than 8,000 paintings and objects are on display in 100 rooms, reflecting 800 years of Dutch history. Rembrandt's oversized masterpiece, The Night Watch from 1642, is a definite must-see.

Sharing the Museumplein (Museum Square) is the cutting-edge Van Gogh Museum, which houses the largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh – more than 200 paintings, 400+ drawings, and 700 letters. It is as much a tour through the driven artist's troubled mind as it is a tour of his body of work. Other museums worth a visit are the sparkly Diamond Museum, or those housed in canal houses that showcase the architectures and lifestyles.

✱ Read a book with a painting or sculpture on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book that features a museum or garden (share text) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in MUSEUMS OF AMSTERDAM.

5. Neighborhoods & More
Amsterdam-Combo-2-SM2
The historic Jordaan neighborhood is a postcard-perfect slice of Amsterdam, with its labyrinth of narrow streets and canals, charming 17th century houses, courtyard gardens, specialty shops, and atmospheric bars and restaurants. Cross over bridges, pop into a pub, sit outside a cafe and people (and bicycle) watch. The newly hip Oud West neighborhood is home to De Hallen, a former tram depot converted into a cultural center and food and drink haven. The bustling, artisan food hall serves up a great selection of drinks and streetfood from some of Amsterdam’s best loved independent establishments.

For something bright and cheery, visit the famous Bloemenmarkt (Floating Flower Market) which offers a variety of colorful fresh flowers, plants and bulbs, as well as Dutch cheeses and souvenirs. When you're ready to unwind and commune with nature, spend some time at Vodelpark, designed and built in 1850. It's a great place to hike, bike, jog and picnic, or just lay out near one of the lakes.

✱ Read a book with a neighborhood or park on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book set in a restaurant, cafe or pub (share name) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in NEIGHBORHOODS AND MORE.

6. Tulips and Windmills
Tulips-SM
If your visit happens to be in the Spring, you'll have the great luck of hitting tulip season. You can enjoy these colorful blooms right in the city, from bouquets at the Bloemenmarkt to the windows of the Tulip Museum, and filled planters during the Tulip Festival in April. However, the best spots to enjoy these wonders are within a few miles of Amsterdam. For one, the countryside of Bollenstreek transforms from regular farmland to fantastical rainbows of flowers. Or visit the magnificent Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse, where 7 million flowers bloom yearly. The park has to be seen to be believed as words couldn't justify its grandeur.

Windmills are as ubiquotous to the Netherlands as tulips, and an open air museum that features them can be found at Zaanse Schans, about 20 minutes from Amsterdam. While the park can be visited any time, most of the windmills are open to the public from April to October. Visitors can also see how clogs are made, do some shopping, or visit a cheese farm.

✱ Read a book with tulips or other flowers on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book with a festival in the story (share text) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in TULIPS AND WINDMILLS.
