I greatly enjoyed this novel when I read it twenty years or so ago. I still remember its main plot points well enough that I would not care to reread it, but it was well written and well paced. Truly deserving of all its awards. The only thing that knocked some luster off the book for me was when I subsequently read Lucifer's Hammer. It made it easy for me to see where David Brin "borrowed" the main idea for his plot. He did it better than Niven did--my second drafts are improvements too--but I wish Brin had gone in original or new directions with the (view spoiler) concept. Niven's postman and Brin's are virtually identical and encounter very similar situations.
This is one of my all time favorite books. I stumbled over it in the "stacks" years ago and have reread it several times since. There are several ideas sort of "discussed" here. They main theme however seems to me to be that we need to be willing to take responsibility instead of hoping someone else will.

(And have had copies disappear into the great book-loan brotherhood.) I rate it right up there with Startide Rising and The Uplift War. Interestingly, those three books were all written in the 1980s when, IMHO, Brin was at the top of his game.
