Helene (hlbickford) | 10 comments Erica Dunbar spoke at the Monadnock Summer Lyceum a few years ago. You can hear her speak about the book at https://www.monadnocklyceum.org/erica.... I didn't attend the lecture though I have listened to it. The book is also one we are reading for the next CALL book group meeting.

The book is very well researched and does convey the angst of a slave, even one in a very well-know, affluent family. Your life is not your own, you are held at the whim of your masters. Though they may treat you well, you are still not the master of your own life.

Let's face it, our forefathers, in this case the Washingtons, built this nation on the backs, hands, and labor of slaves. Why we are still treating them as second class citizens is beyond me.

An interesting read, somewhat repetitive however. I was not aware of Ona Judge's New Hampshire connection. The Portsmouth community is very active in promoting awareness of the Black history in the area and is part of the Black Heritage Trail in NH. http://blackheritagetrailnh.org/
