This book has been in my "Books I'm Currently Reading" FOREVER. Technically, it's next to my bedside. A couple of ladies in my IRL book club have just GUSHED over it. I've started it twice now and while it wasn't bad...I've been easily distracted by other books. Sometimes I don't feel like my reading interests necessarily synch up with the ladies in my book club (they are, for the most part, about 15-20 years older than me; I'm 46, BTW) so I was wondering if any of you all have read it and what you thought. Is it worth keeping by my bedside?

I have never heard of the book. Will have to look into it.
I have a book that is always on the Currently Reading shelf that is a workbook. I put it down a year ago. I am determined to finish it this year!!!

I just tried to look it up, but Goodreads doesn't seem to have it listed. Is that the correct spelling?

OMG! It's 1000 pages - no wonder!
I'd really have to be in the mood for an epic to start that one.

Shantaram is one of those books that everyone owns but very few people have finished! The ones I know who have finished, loved it, but it just looks like SUCH a battle that I struggle to contemplate picking it up off my 'to read' shelf...
Just had to say that I LOVED Shantaram! I recommend it to people all the time! My sister insisted I read it. I don't think I would have picked it out on my own. But completely worth it! It is so good!
I read it a number of years ago while in India and LOVED it! I read it really quickly. It's a bit silly but an epic ramble of an adventure. A rare 5 stars for me...
I purchased this book when I was studying in Cape Town, started it about 6 times, and then finally read it through a few years ago (well, closer to 5 or 6, now). It definitely is a labor of love, but I think once you get through the first 100 pages or so, it starts to move faster. That is definitely a tough sell for a 1,000 page novel. Some of the writing is so moving that at times it took my breath away, and I would have to set it down, write down a passage, and then come back to it. It's a worthwhile journey, in my opinion.
For those who made it all the way through, the author has a new book coming out "which continues the story of Lin who we met in the bestseller Shantaram".
