When a young actress is found brutally raped and murdered with Sebastian St. Cyr's gun by her side, he is sought by the police. He runs for cover but not away. He is determined to find the real killer to clear his name and bring her justice. But it seems the girl was mixed up in several plots with multiple enemies. Sebastian's investigation is helped by a former lover and a young pickpocket.

Very well plotted mystery with interesting characters I am looking forward to seeing in future volumes.

I just read the most recent book, the 16th. It's been a consistently good series. I never thought to tag any of them as gothic, but it does fit.

I love this series, as the characters evolve over time and the author includes a lot of historical detail. I have the newest one reserved at the library. The only problem is that it is impossible to remember which book is which because they all have those similar titles!

Looks like I will have to check out another series...
