Macbeth- Dramatic Irony
An example of a dramatic irony in a novel I have read would be Dracula. In the novel the character Jonathan Harker doesn't know Count Dracula is actually a vampire looking to charm and imprison him. With clues along Harkers journey to the castle and with suspicious activity happening with his stay, you know Count Dracula is a vampire. In Macbeth, the first scene shows the three women making plans to meet again. "When the hurlyburly's done, when the battle's lost and won," they are talking about the battle against the irish rebels. Until the third scene can you see the dramatic irony. When the three women come to Macbeth you realize that they are witches, before that there was nothing to suggest other wise. Macbeth doesn't know whether they are or not, but he speculates. There is where I see the dramatic irony.
The example of a dramatic irony I have chosen is from a show I am addicted to which is Pretty Little Liars. (Don't judge, it's a good show) In the beginning of this show there are 4 girls who's close friend died, yet they were getting threatening messages from who they think murdered their close friend Alison. These threats and drama begins to happen throughout seasons then suddenly it turns out that the body they found wasn't Alison but another girl. Alison is then found by her friends, yet almost killed, and then the show brings Alison into the show. Basically the dramatic irony is that she was dead and now she isn't so...watch it I promise it's good! In macbeth the dramatic irony I think is how lady macbeth comes off to everyone the sweet wife of macbeth yet she's the one who is greedy and convinces Macbeth to kill the king. " As thou art in desire? Wouldst thou have that Which thou self esteem'st, the ornament of life, And live a coward in thine own steem." She's is basically lowering his self esteem and tricking him in to kill the king and be a man.
An example of dramatic irony can be seen within the show Dexter. This show revolves around a Miami police forensics expert who leads a double life. To everyone around him, including his sister who is a detective in the same precinct, he’s just the typical lab geek who specializes in blood splatter. His other “profession” however is being a serial killer of criminals whom he believes have escaped justice. The dramatic irony is us as an audience already know what he’s up to yet his sister and other coworkers are blind to his secret life.In Macbeth, Duncan states comfortably, “This castle hath a pleasant seat” but unknowing to him, this is the place where a plot to kill him the next night has been formed by Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. It’s ironic because we know his fate yet he is oblivious and comfortable in the situation.
Another example of a dramatic irony would be Romeo and Juliet. In the end, Romeo believe that Juliet is dead, but she is not. Juliet is under a potion that makes her appear dead. So, Romeo drinks poison to kill himself because he didn't think his life was worth living without the love of his life. Once Juliet awakes from the potion, she saw what Romeo has done. So, she stabs herself in the heart with a knife. A dramatic irony in Macbeth would be when the witches say "fair is foul and foul is fair" in Act 1 Scene 1 line 12. This means even if they're doing evil (foul) there would still be no difference(fair). With every plot the witches create there is no remorse. The ironic twist is when in act 1 scene 3 line 39 Macbeth repeats a similar line when he encounters the witches in A Heath near Forres. "So foul and fair a day I have not seen," mentions Macbeth. He says this because all the solders were killed in the battle which is foul, and fair because he has won the battle and has been named King. This scene put Macbeth in a black hole because good and evil are intertwined.
An example of a dramatic irony that I decided to choose was the first part of the movie Toy Story. In the beginning the main characters Woody and Buzz lightyear, along with all the other toys are under the delusion that they are real. Woody thinks he's a real cowboy while Buzz thinks he's a space ranger. The toys talk and move only when the humans aren't around. Therefore, the dramatic irony shown here is that only we as the audience know that they are all only toys and can talk and move from the start while the humans don't. Although we as the audience know from the beginning we still watch it to see what happens when the truth is revealed.ACT I SCENE V
LINES 67, 68, & 69
Lady Macbeth: "Only look up clear. To alter favor ever is to fear. Leave all the rest to me".
The dramatic irony in the play "Macbeth" by Shakespeare is that we as the audience know what they are plotting and up to while King Duncan and the other characters don't. Macbeth is only acting loyal to Duncan to gain his trust, while at the same time Lady Macbeth is planning his death and the one who sways Macbeth to kill Duncan.
My example of dramatic irony is Star Wars. Darth Vader is Luke Skywalkers father. This is not revealed to Luke till episode 5 but we the audience know Darth Vader is his father. Luke hates Darth Vader and is trying to destroy him and his empire. Then he faces his father the man that killed his mentor the only father figure he knew. A dramatic irony in MacBeth is Macbeth acts very loyal to Duncan all the while planning his murder.
Act I SceneVII
"If it were done tis done, then twere well it were done quickly. If th assassination Could trammel up the consequence and catch with his surcease success."
The movie I have chosen as an example of dramatic irony is a movie I despise, but for lack of a better example, I will use it. The movie is Pearl Harbor. Two lifelong friends enlist in the Army Air Corp prior to World War II. One friend falls in love with a nurse and then is shipped to England to fight the Germans as part of the Eagle Squadron. He is shot down and is presumed dead. The downed Eagle squadron pilot’s best friend acquaints himself with the girlfriend and end up romantically involved. He impregnates her only to find out that the pilot is alive and his not happy about his friend “looking after his interest”. At the end of the movie the best friend dies and the pilot raised the child as his own. In Hamlet, I find ironic is in Act II Scene IV line 5, Ross states “thou seest the heavens, as troubled with man’s act, threatens his bloody stage”. In Act II Scene IV line 16 Ross states Duncan’s horses “turned wild in nature, broke their stalls, flung out, contending ‘gainst obedience”. At this point in the play, Ross does not know that Duncan has been murdered. Duncan’s horses also turned their back to obedience just as Hamlet has.
Life itself can be dramatic; many times we just don’t see it until we take a moment to put the pieces together of our life to see it. Sometimes drama comes in a form of being ironic; this is what happened to one of my friends. My friend was deployed to Iraq back in 2002 he was engaged, no more than a year to be married. When he was deployed he meets a fellow soldier that was in his same combat regiment, with time they became good friends and talked about hobbies and family. My friend was told that he could not come back because of he’s short term in Iraq, even though it had been 10 months deployed all ready. He asked the soldier if he could please drive down to Texas to deliver some presents for he’s girlfriend. When the soldier returns to Iraq and tells my friend of how lovely he’s girlfriend was, he immediately became suspicious of how he expressed about her. After a week of same type of conversations, he called us asked to keep an eye open for he’s girlfriend. The soldier confessed after two weeks that he had an affair with my friend’s fiancée and immediately he called her and confirm, sadly it was true. The ironic part is that after my friend was send home from Iraq and wanted to start over at the military base where he was based, he found a girl in the base’s bar that after 4 dates turn out to be the sister of the soldier who betrayed my friend. “My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical, Shakes so my single state of man”. Sounds like the soldier that betrayed my friend and even if he thought twice about doing it, he’s corrupted desire was stronger.Life indeed has Dramatic Irony, look around to find it.
A good example for dramatic irony is the movie Child’s Play. I know it’s a super old movie but that was one of the movies that came to my mind. It’s a movie about a single mother who gives his son, Andy, a Good Guy doll for his birthday. Andy wanted that doll for his birthday and when he opened his birthday gift and saw it was a Good Guy doll he was surprised. The Good Guy dolls in the commercials was shown to be a friendly doll but the one that Andy received was possessed, it was an evil doll named “ Chucky”. Chucky is a serial killer doll who wants to transfer his soul to a human being. Andy is an easy target because he is a defenseless child. None of the characters in the movie knows and never imagined that the Good Guy doll was the assassin in the movie. We, the audience knew in the beginning that he was going to be an evil doll because the movie starts when a criminal who is into Voodoo is trying to escape from the law after committing a crime. He gets shot and knowing he is not going to make it, he possesses the doll.An example of a dramatic irony is in Act 1, Scene 6, when Duncan says, “This castle hath a pleasant seat”. Duncan feels secure and welcome at the home of his loyal kinsmen not imagining that in that place he is going to killed.
An example of a dramatic irony is the short story “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry. It’s a story of a poor couple (Della and Jim) who has nothing but two prized possessions. Della loves her hair and the Jim loves his watch given by his father. They have no money and its Christmas they want to get each other something nice. Della cuts her hair to sell it to buy her husband a pocket watch chain. On the other side Jim decide to sell his watch to buy Della combs for her beautiful hair. Their actions were based without knowledge. The irony is that they both sold their most prized possessions to get their significant other something for their prized possessions to find out that they sold it. They both love each other over anything. In Macbeth, the most obvious moment of irony is when King Duncan believes that Macbeth is loyal; because of his ambition he kills King Duncan.
“He’s here in double trust: First, as I am his kinsman and his subject, Strong both against the deed; then, as his host,Who should against his murderer shut the door, Not bear the knife myself.”
An example of dramatic irony in the movie, "The Great Gatsby" When George thinks his wife is having an affair with his friend.and he thinks that Gatsby is the one that killed his wife when it was actually Daisy. And that. Mr. Gatsby himself has imagined himself having a relationship with Daisy, he invisioned himself with her and she returns with her Husband. In this story, Macbeth, the witches have alot to do with the story even though in the first two acts they hardly come out, They are already displaying when evil shall arise they were come and meet again. When the killing of Duncan happens, Lady Macbeth influenced Macbeth as well to do it and to wash his hands clean as though nothing happened. You can see regret maybe that Macbeth had after doing so.His wife almost pushes him to do so, and she convinces him after his feeling are expressed, in Act II like 35, Macbeth; "One cried; god bless us!and Amen, the other as they had seen me with these handman's hands, list'ning their fear, i could not say Amen" when they did say "God bless us!Lady Macbeth; Consider it not so deeply" she tries to convince not to think about the horrible deed he just did.
The dramatic irony in "Othello" play written by Shakespeare. (I really love this book, most of my examples will probably aim towards Othello.) The story of how the lengths someone will go into getting what they want. You see almost everything based off of the 7 deadly sins if you've read the book and looked into the personality and actions of the characteryou'll see what I mean. The way Shakespeare wrote the book was in a way that put a negative light on humanity and shows even the purist heart could have a tragic ending. Iago's envy for the position that Othello has been rewarded with causes him to manipulate Othello into thinking his wife Desdemona is cheating with Cassio. Desdemona is head of heels in love with Othello. The dramatic Irony is when Iago tells Othello to hide behind the curtains and listen on to Desdemona's lies. Of course to the audience we just see how Iago twists every word from Desdemona, and starts putting words in her mouth. With this Othello already thinks the worst of Desdemona and because of the great pride he developed and now just sees hate with every word she says.
In Macbeth also by the great Shakespeare, we see almost same similarities as he shines light on how easily a human being can be manipulated. "Be innocent of the knowledge, dearest chuck. Till thou applaud the deed." Macbeth tells lady Macbeth. Being close to the plan, and realizing what he is about to do, I almost feel as if he is starting to suspect of Lady Macbeth's character. Tragic Irony again here is how little you know of the one you're with, and how easily it is to be fooled by the one you're with.
Victoria wrote: "The example of a dramatic irony I have chosen is from a show I am addicted to which is Pretty Little Liars. Shanda wrote: "My example of dramatic irony is Star Wars. Darth Vader is Luke Skywalkers father. This is not revealed to Luke till episode 5 but we the audience know Darth Vader is his father. Luke hates Darth Va..."Lady Macbeth is literally an irony in this act, she is a sweet girl to others but deep inside she is a coniving character who is planning death.
Lady Macbeth's words that opened my eyes to her character and were completely creppy were, "Be so much more the man, Nor time nor Place, did then adhere, and yet you would make both, They have made themselves, and that their fitness now Does unmake you.I have given suck and know how tender 'tis to love the babe that milks me; I would, while it was my smiling face Have plucked my nipples from his boneless gums and dashed the brains out, had so I sworn as you have done this." In this act is where she is trying to convince Macbeth to commit the murder and kill Duncan if not she will take away her love and consider him a weak man. A dramatic irony that I have seen is in the movie "Tarzan" where Clayton, the person who is helping Jane and her father meet gorrillas betrays them and Tarzan as well. Tarzan refuses to have them meet the gorillas but Clayton convinces him to do so by telling him that if he doesn't show them the gorillas, Jane will not stay with Tarzan. So Tarzan is convinced. When Clayton finds where Tarzan's family (gorillas) are located he plans to capture and sell them. Clayton locks tarzan so he can't escape and help them. The irony here is trusting someone who ends up betraying you.
An example of dramatic irony are episodes from the TV sitcom "Friends." The show is based on 6 friends and their lives. In season 5, Monica and Chandler are friends but become in love and try to keep their relationship a secret from their friends. The audience knows that they are dating but their friends have no clue. Then later on one by one of their friends find out about their relationship and are shocked and happy for them that they are actually in love rather than lust. A dramatic irony in "Macbeth" would be that Duncan thinks that Macbeth is being true to him. In reality the audience knows that he is planning to murder him.
"Cannot be ill, cannot be good...commencing in truth? If good why do I yield to that suggestion...My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical, shakes so my single state of man that function is smother'd in surmise, and nothing is but what is not." He is thinking of murdering him but is saying how can he think such a thing like that.
A perfect example of a dramatic irony in a movie is when both of the main characters called Allie and Noah in “The Notebook “ fall in love with each other. Both Allie and Noah have a summer romance and go madly in love not thinking about the consequences there summer romance was going to bring. Noah was a country boy and Allie was from the city with means that Noah comes from less resource than Allie. In the movie Allie’s father is described by “having more money then God”. Allie’s parents are worried because of Allies actions and feelings towards Noah because they did not want Noah for Allie, Allies mother called him “trash”. Allies parents wanted someone with class and money that could give Allies everything they ever gave Allie. When summer was over Allies parents took her away and Noah was to late by the time Allie was gone. So 7 years past and allie was living her life as well as Noah and one-day destiny brought them back together. Allies had to choice between the rich young boy and poor Noah the love of her life. Finally after spending days with Noah she realized she wanted to be the rest of her life with the love of her life. My favorite quote of Macbeth - “ Fair is foul, and foul is fair, Hover through the fog and filthy air.”
Shanda wrote: "My example of dramatic irony is Star Wars. Darth Vader is Luke Skywalkers father. This is not revealed to Luke till episode 5 but we the audience know Darth Vader is his father. Luke hates Darth Va..."I enjoyed the Star Wars reference and agree with the example of dramatic irony in the Macbeth quote. The faithful soldier protecting the king's land while secretly he is planning to take the throne.
An example of dramatic irony to me would be in the movie, "Mean Girls." In mean girls, Cady the new girl from Africa, is unaware of the slang the girls in high school speak. When Cady tells one of the girls she's been homeschooled all her life, Regina replies to Cady "shut up," which in this case Regina didn't mean it literally. Regina said shut up because she couldn't believe that Cady had never attended school. In this scene, Cady shows how little a homeschooled person can know of society. The audience knew what regina meant, but Cady didn't.A dramatic irony in the story Macbeth would be when Lady Macbeth goes into the room where Macduff has found Duncan dead.
ACT II, SCENE 3- "What's the business, That such a hideous trumpet calls to parley The sleepers of the house? speak, speak!" Lady Macbeth goes into the situation like if she doesn't know what is going on but in all reality, she and Macbeth know the whole truth.
Suzette wrote: "An example of dramatic irony in the movie, "The Great Gatsby" When George thinks his wife is having an affair with his friend.and he thinks that Gatsby is the one that killed his wife when it was a..."I agree with you Suzette, I think that it's a dramatic irony because Lady Macbeth wants to triumph as much, or even more than Macbeth so she wants to do whatever is on her hands to become queen.

I really enjoyed remembering that scene thank you; you brought many funny memories to mind.
A story or show that I thought of for dramatic irony is Breaking Bad. In the show Walter White is a science teacher and under the circumstances and his knowledge decides to produce meth. He starts off as a drug producer and as the show progresses so does his love for power. He starts killing people and plotting against them for his best interest. His love of power is what drives him to become one of the best drug dealers of that region. The irony in the story Macbeth is that we know what everyone is conspiring against King Duncan and the others don't. Macbeth tricks Duncan by gaining his trust, while Lady Macbeth is planning to kill Duncan. Lady Macbeth is the one who convinces Macbeth to kill Duncan.
Leslie wrote: "An example of dramatic irony to me would be in the movie, "Mean Girls." In mean girls, Cady the new girl from Africa, is unaware of the slang the girls in high school speak. Angel wrote: "An example of a dramatic irony in a novel I have read would be Dracula. I thought you could tell the three were witches it was my belief from the prophecy that they told to MacBeth kind of an underlying afterthought. Just my opinion because no one else would read the future.

I also love the quote because the King was at total ease and had no idea that all along the plot to murder him was going on.
My example for dramatic irony is the movie My Sister’s Keeper. The movie is about a sister conceived by vitro fertilization who is a genetic match to her older sister suffering from leukemia. Because Anna, the little sister, is helping her sister Kate by donating blood, bone marrow, and even organs she was not able to enjoy her life the way she wanted to. At the age of 13 Anna sues her parents for medical emancipation. The reason Anna sues her parents is because Kate asked her to help her die so to fulfill her sisters wishes she sued her parents and stop donating to Kate. The mother did not know of this agreement but the sisters and the audience did so you do not feel bad that Anna is doing this to her sister. In Macbeth his wife and he seem loyal to the king but behind his back they are really planning his murder. Lady Macbeth sates… “and you shall put This nights great business into my dispatch,” this quote helps us understand that Lady Macbeth is planning the murder why Macbeth acts on it.
Victoria wrote: "The example of a dramatic irony I have chosen is from a show I am addicted to which is Pretty Little Liars. (Don't judge, it's a good show) In the beginning of this show there are 4 girls who's clo..."Lady Macbeth absolutely fits the dramatic irony criteria. As soon as she is introduces we get the idea that she is power hungry. I think she show another side of her character when she meets the king. She hides that yearn for power in the kings presents.
Monique wrote: "An example of dramatic irony can be seen within the show Dexter. This show revolves around a Miami police forensics expert who leads a double life. Naive to the assassination plot, he joins Macbeth and his wife.
What bigger irony than Adolf Hitler as he killed 6 million Jews being himself a Jew. The history of the Nazis is one of my favorite stories. It is so intriguing how everything happened and how fast everything escalated. Until this day I find it so unbelievable that the holocaust actually happened and that it happened not so long ago. There can be no argument that William Shakespeare's genius and gift of poetic writing is present in Macbeth. In Macbeth what I find to be dramatic irony is that the “witches” fortunetellers who reinforce the ambitions for the throne knowing that if people found out they were witches they were going to be executed. Another dramatic irony would be how King Duncan trusts Macbeth to be a loyal servant and a true patriot, but little does he know what is about to happen.

Marielena wrote: "A perfect example of a dramatic irony in a movie is when both of the main characters called Allie and Noah in “The Notebook “ fall in love with each other. We as the audience know that in the end they will end up staying together, meanwhile everyone else thinks she will end up marrying the rich, young guy because he fits her category and can give her everything that Noah can’t. Good example for your description.

In the novel the character Jonathan Harker doesn't know Count Dracula is actually a vampire looking to charm and imprison him..."The way you described dracula sounds like a perfect example of dramatic irony! And yes in Macbeth I couldn't agree with you more, I feel like the witches play a huge role in the story
Amber wrote: "My example for dramatic irony is the movie My Sister’s Keeper." I believe this is a good example you gave of dramatic irony. Of course us that audience knew of their actions but the mother didn't which made it intense.
Maritza wrote: "In Macbeth, the most obvious moment of irony is when King Duncan believes that Macbeth is loyal; because of his ambition he kills King Duncan." This is a good example of dramatic irony I believe. Macbeth really does just get greedy and wants more so he then plots the murder with his wife.
An example of a dramatic irony is when Fiona loves Shrek in the first movie. But only does the donkey and the actual audience know. This is considered dramatic irony bescause the character Shrek does not know about Fiona's feelings towards him,but the actual audience does. Shrek will get suprised because not knowing how Fiona is feeling toward him. A dramatic irony in Macbeth would be in how lady Macbeth acts loyal to King Duncan so she can have his trust. Not knowing that Lady Macbeth is planning his murder. Its sad how someone can give all their trust and yet to only recieve not good from them. Not knowing actually how in reality the person can be inside.

I also like how you used the movie tarzan for this.
Monique wrote: "An example of dramatic irony can be seen within the show Dexter. This show revolves around a Miami police forensics expert who leads a double life. To everyone around him, including his sister who ..."I love first of all how you used Dexter into this, because it workers perfectly for this topic. Yeah, its crazy in a way how we know everything that the others don't see right in front of them.
In the play of Macbeth we see many examples of a dramatic irony. When the play began three witches approached Macbeth and Banquo who addressed Macbeth as thane of Cawdor and they also predict to them that Macbeth would become king. Duncan the King of Scotland was told by wounded soldiers that Macbeth and Banquo had fought bravely and victoriously in battle. They had defeated the rebels and had captured the thane of Cawdor. The king ordered that the traitorous thane of Cawdor to be executed and his title be given to Macbeth. So the reader already knew that the witches’ prediction was true. Another dramatic irony we see is that the King believed Macbeth to be very trustworthy when the reader knew that Macbeth was planning his death. We see another dramatic irony when Macduff finds the lifeless body of King Duncan he begins to sob loudly. Lady Macbeth walks in demanding to know why there is so much noise and what has happened but the reader already knew that Lady Macbeth knew exactly what the matter was since she was the one who plotted the king’s death. There are many other examples of dramatic ironies in this play these were only a few. An example of a dramatic irony I can think of is from the soap opera Passions. Whitney falls in love and even becomes pregnant by the man of her dreams, Chad, not knowing that he was her half-brother, a child her mother gave up many years ago. The audience knew the whole time that Chad and Whitney were half siblings while they witnessed them fall deeper and deeper in love. “False face must hide what the false heart doth know.” Macbeth

She uses her charm, beauty, and seductiveness to hide her true self. She’s the evil mind behind this whole murder.
Pearl wrote: "An example of a dramatic irony that I decided to choose was the first part of the movie Toy Story. He portrays himself to be very trustworthy and loyal to King Duncan. But we as the audience know that Macbeth is plotting the death of the beloved king.

I’m sure all of you have seen a soap opera at some point, American or Mexican. They are both equally crammed with clichéd and absurd story lines. For example: A boy falls in love with a girl but does not realize that they are actually brother and sister. The audience, however, knows and is grossed out! This is an example of dramatic irony. Dramatic irony is common in Shakespeare’s plays. It makes the audience feel good because they know more than the characters do.
Begin this discussion board by posting another example of dramatic irony. Think of movies, TV shows, soap operas/ novellas or plays you have seen, or make something up.
Then give an example of dramatic irony in Macbeth. Be specific by pointing to an Act and Scene. Do not forget to use a quote.
