“Dramatic irony occurs when the words or actions of a character contain more meaning or significance than is perceived by that character.” Keep this in mind as you are reading Macbeth Act 1-3.

I’m sure all of you have seen a soap opera at some point, American or Mexican. They are both equally crammed with clichéd and absurd story lines. For example: A boy falls in love with a girl but does not realize that they are actually brother and sister. The audience, however, knows and is grossed out! This is an example of dramatic irony. Dramatic irony is common in Shakespeare’s plays. It makes the audience feel good because they know more than the characters do.

Begin this discussion board by posting another example of dramatic irony. Think of movies, TV shows, soap operas/ novellas or plays you have seen, or make something up.

Then give an example of dramatic irony in Macbeth. Be specific by pointing to an Act and Scene. Do not forget to use a quote.

Maria Garcia | 57 comments In the 2009 movie The Stepfather Dylan Walsh is a man who looks for divorced women with children. He acts nice at first then, when things start to go bad in the relationship,or if friends of the family start to ask questions they somehow end up dead. And when people start to find out that he is not who he says he is, this is when he ends up killing the entire family and moves on to a new innocent family. Basically he is a serial killer and has killed many families in the past. The audience knows that he is a killer.
In Macbeth Act 1 Scene V Macbeth says "My dearest love Duncan comes here tonight" Lady Macbeth "And when goes hence?"
Macbeth "Tomorrow as he purposes" Lady Macbeth "Oh, never shall sun that morrow see."

Jaime Gonzalez | 25 comments There are many examples of dramatic irony, especially in scary movies. When the actor walks into a house and the audience knows the killer is in the house. Typical scary movie. One example of dramatic irony I want to talk about is from my favorite TV show, Breaking Bad. Hank Shrader is a DEA agent looking for crystal-meth producer "Heisenberg". We know that "Heisenberg" is Schrader's brother-in-law, but agent Schrader doesn't. An example of dramatic irony in Macbeth is in Act 1, Scene 4, when Duncan says:
"There's no art
To find the mind's construction in the face.
He was a gentleman on whom I built
An absolute trust."
Duncan says he trust Macbeth, and the audience knows that Macbeth is expecting to become king and will kill to get the honor. Macbeth is not at all trustworthy.

Yadira Estrada | 48 comments A great example of a dramatic irony is in the movie “Shrek”, is when Fiona falls in love with Shrek. It’s consider a dramatic irony because we all know Fiona has feelings for Shrek. Even the donkey knows about Fiona’s feelings towards Shrek, but in the other hand Shrek is clueless.

In Act 1, Scene 6 “This castle has a pleasant seat; the air nimbly and sweetly recommends itself into our gentle senses.” Duncan, is expressing how nice and sweet is the environment that is surrounding him but needless he knows that is going to be killed but we as readers know he is going to be murdered in the castle where every little step has been planned. The murder of Duncan was planned by Macbeth and his wife. This scene for me is a dramatically irony. It’s so shady how he has no clue what is going to happen to him.

message 5: by Gilbert (new)

Gilbert Salinas (GilbertAngelo) | 47 comments An example of dramatic irony is in the Television Series The Walking Dead, episode two season five, when we see Bob Stookey tied up to a metal pole held captive by Gareth and his fellow cannibal comrades. Gareth explains to Bob that him and his fellow group members are just game and they were going to be hunted down one by one and eaten like animals while he was indulging on a piece of Bob’s flesh he had just finished flame broiling. Bob is horrified at the fact he was being eaten in front of himself at fist but his mood shifts suddenly to a wicked joyful tone as he starts to laugh hysterically. Gareth confused and concerned by his reaction, asks Bob why he’s laughing only to find out Bob had been bitten so the meat they had just gratefully and confidently consumed was tainted with the viral bacteria that turns the living into the walking dead. Its ironic how Gareth was so convinced he had the advantage only to find out his divine theory of eating people was his downfall.
It’s ironic [Act I, Scene VI] how Duncan the king of Scotland had so much trust in Macbeth’s Wife when she was the one who had the most gruesome intentions to his well being.
Duncan: See, see, our honored hostess! The love the follows us sometimes is our trouble, Which still we thank as love. Hereih I teach you How you shall bid god lid us for your pains, And thank us for your trouble.
Lady Macbeth : All our service in every point twice done, and then done double, Were poor and single business to contend Against those honors deep and broad wherewith your majesty loads our house. For those of old, And the late dignities heaped up to them, We rest your hermits.
In this example Duncan is expressing his gratefulness and gratitude for the hospitality of Lady Macbeth ironically unaware that she has plotted his assassination.

message 6: by Arlette.Cortez (new)

Arlette.Cortez | 72 comments An example of dramatic irony can be when a guy is cheating on his girlfriend with another girl, but none of them know he is a cheating on them only the audience who are watching him cheat. In the play Macbeth written by Shakespeare we can find a lot of dramatic irony. For example, in act two scene three it was morning already when they found the king dead.
“Enter Banquo.
Oh Banquo! Oh Banquo! Our royal master’s murdered!
Lady Macbeth: woe, alas! What, in our house?
Banquo: Too cruel anywhere. Dear Duff, I prithee, contradict thyself and say it is not so.
Enter Macbeth, Lennox, and Ross.
Macbeth: Had I but died an hour before this chance, I had liv'd a blessed time; for, from this instant, there's nothing serious in mortality; all is but toys: renown, and grace, is dead; the wine of life is drawn, and the mere lees is left this vault to brag of.”
In this scene of the act we see how Lady Macbeth, and Macbeth both act as if they didn’t know who kill the king. Knowing they both did the crime. Although Macbeth gives a great speech on the kings dead we as the audience know that his speech is not given in a sincere manner.

One of the more recent examples of dramatic irony that comes to mind is from a show called “Breaking Bad”. It follows a chemistry teacher named Walter White that is given a short time to live once diagnosed with terminal cancer. In his desperation to leave his family financially secure before he passes away, he partners up with a local drug dealer, which also happens to be a former student of his. He then uses his talents in chemistry to produce the most potent crystal meth anyone has ever created before. A main theme explored in the series is centered around the duality of human nature and the lengths one will go to, to keep these different ‘worlds’ from colliding with each other. Only the audience is privy to Walter White’s darker vocation. He will eventually reveal this darker to side to his wife. A constant source of tension and best example of dramatic irony involves Walter attempting to stay one step ahead of his friend and brother in law, Hank, who works for the DEA and is actively pursuing “Heisenberg,” Walter White’s alter ego. Similarly, in the story of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, there are many examples of dramatic irony to be found. Three witches provide Macbeth with clues to his future, Macbeth is told that he is to become king, but only the witches know how the events are to unfold. This then sets a course of action in which Macbeth murders his king in an attempt to ascend to the throne. A similar theme of duality of nature is explored in this story as well. Macbeth’s darker alter ego that lusts for power is kept hidden to all but his wife. In act II scene III, Lennox is conversing with Macbeth over the intemperate weather they had over the night. To which Macbeth (knowing the king was dead) replies “Twas a rough night.” Macbeth's statement clearly had nothing to do with the weather.

Risa.Garcia | 33 comments Dramatic irony is a technique used in literature in which the true significance of actions or words of a character are clear to the audience but not the character(s). An example of dramatic irony in a modern movie that I believe nearly all of my fellow classmates have watched is the irony between Regina George eating Kalteen bars and their true meaning. Katie offers them to Regina when she cries out about wanting to lose weight. Although Katie knows Kalteen bars are used for extra weight gain, she insists they will help her lose weight and Regina begins eagerly her “diet”. The audience is clearly aware of the effects of Kalteen bars because their instructions for directed use were stated earlier in the movie. This closely relates to the dramatic irony in the literary piece, “Macbeth”. The three witches hail Macbeth as, “thane of Cawdor!” At this time, neither Macbeth, nor Banquo are aware that the sergeant has pronounced Macbeth’s honors to the King but the audience is well aware of his valor in battle. This was in fact stated in Act 1 Scene 3 when Captain insists on Macbeth’s valor, “For brave Macbeth-well he deserves that name…”. Although Macbeth is not yet informed of his crowning, the audience is aware because this information.

In the film, Point Break, a FBI agent who goes undercover so he could follow a lead on a case he is working on. The case is about a number of bank robberies that have been happening in the city. His partner has a theory that the bank robbers are surfers. So he lies to a girl whom he meets on the beach while trying to surf. He tells her that he is a lawyer and that he wants to learn just for the pure joy of it. When the truth is, he is only wanting to surf so he could get in with the surf culture so he can catch the robbers. Through out the film the audience knows he is an agent but the women and her surfer pals have no clue, until the end.

Joanna | 60 comments An example of irony can be seen in the movie Titanic. Everyone is so excited to go in the new ship because it's the biggest ship of them all and nothing can make it sink. We all know what happens at the end, it sinks and a lot of people die.

In act 1 scene 2 there is a little irony where Ross talks about the battle they had. He talks about their troops being afraid, and they thought they wouldn't have won the battle. Macbeth then came in and "confronted" the King of Norway, and at the end Macbeth and the rest won.

Jessica Perez | 72 comments An example of dramatic irony is in the movie "August Osage County". The Weston family has just lost a member of the family and they all have reunited to their childhood home, were their pilled-out mother lives alone, now. Throughout the movie you see drama after drama. We see dramatic irony throughout the movie but what catches my eye and keeps me wanting more is when Barbara finds out that her sister Ivy is being flirtatious with their first cousin Little Charles Aiken and that their in love. Arguing continues throughout dinner. Mattie Fae (Little Charles Aiken mother) ask Barbara if she thinks something is going on between Ivy and little Charles; Barbara admits that their in love and defends their love to Mattie Fae, until Mattie reveals a deep secret saying that little Charles is their half-brother and they cannot be together.

In Act 1 scene 5-7, Lady Macbeth and Macbeth keep a secret upon themselves to kill King Duncan. Just as Macbeth is ready to back down, Lady Macbeth is outraged and questions his manhood- Act 1 scene 7. Its sad to know that we readers know what has been plotted and feel helpless to do anything or say anything to King Duncan.

Miguel | 42 comments An example of dramatic irony can be shown in the animation series "Hey Arnold". Arnold is the protagonist and Helga is considered to be the antagonist. Helga spends most of her time picking on Arnold and making his life difficult but he doesn't know that the reason he is being bothered by her is because she likes him.

Act I, Scene lV
The Prince of Cumberland! That is a step
On which I must fall down or else overleap,
For in my way it lies. Stars, hide your fires;
Let not light see my black and deep desires.

These are some lines of soliloquy from Macbeth revealing his dark ambitions and plans after he becomes king of Scotland. This will create dramatic irony at the end of the play because Duncan trusts Macbeth and claims to be trustworthy but he has no idea of Macbeth's bad intentions.

message 13: by Eric (new)

Eric Campos | 19 comments In Macbeth, the irony that I saw fit was when the three witches call Macbeth King. He has no idea why they call him this but he begins to think deeper into the concept of him being king. Though the witches do not till him or when he will be king. He begins to ponder the idea and tells his wife and now she thinks its very possible to be king. That now it begins to make them both think horrible thoughts on killing the king. All it took for Macbeth to commit murder is for three witches to tell him he would be king. If they would have never told him, would he have still been king and would Duncan still be alive.

Jaqueline Chapa | 71 comments The movie Ruby Sparks revolves entirely around a case of dramatic irony. The protagonist, Calvin Weir-Fields, is a writer who has been struggling with writer's block ever since his first successful novel. When his therapist advises him to write anything, he writes of a girl he dreamt of - Ruby Sparks. One morning he finds her in his kitchen and he soon realizes that this creation of his has come to life. Calvin and Ruby are in love, but their relationship deteriorates as Calvin uses his writing to manipulate her and their relationship. This is an example of dramatic irony in that the audience knows that Ruby is Calvin's creation and that he has full control of her, but she doesn't.

In Shakespeare's Macbeth, there are various bits of dramatic irony all throughout the play. One example is seen in Act 2, Scene 3, when Lennox asks "Goes the King hence today?" Macbeth replies "He does; he did appoint so." However, the audience knows that King Duncan will not be leaving, as Macbeth has already killed him.

message 15: by Alexa (new)

Alexa Trevino | 37 comments Dramatic Irony can be seen in the popular film “The Lion King”. The main character, Simba, is a young cub who would one day become king just like his father Mufasa. Mufasa had a brother ‘Scar’ who was envious of the thrown. He plotted to kill his brother Mufasa so he would be the next king. He succeeded and convinced scared little Simba to run away because it was his fault his father was dead. Sadly, the audience knows the entire time that it was Scar himself who plotted the “accident”. Which Simba doesn’t find out until much later in the film. Just like in Macbeth, a king is killed by a successor who is filled with greed.
In Macbeth there are several examples of dramatic Irony. One being in Act 5, Scene 4 when Malcom and the English lord Siward “decide that each soldier should cut down a bough of the forest and carry it in front of him as they march to the castle, thereby disguising their numbers”. And the reader knows that the wood of trees were a sign of the kings coming death. Sure enough in Act 5, Scene 5 “a messenger enters with astonishing news: the trees of Birnam Wood are advancing toward Dunsinane.” Just like the witches had prophesized.

Yuri Sandoval | 64 comments One of my old time favorite movies that has a dramatic irony is “Cruel Intentions.” In the movie Sebastian and his step sister, Katryn make a bet. If Sebastian succeeds in going to bed with Annete; a virgin who is saving herself for marriage, Sebastian wins his stepsister Katryn which he has been seductive by, but if he loses Katryn will keep his jaguar. The irony of this movie is that even though Sebastian wins the bet he no longer cares about his reward in winning because in the end he ends up falling in love with Annete. In the story Macbeth, it is ironic how after he does what his wife has asked him to do; which is killing to win his throne, he is not joyful, but feels troubled as he looks at his hands and feels sorry for what he has just done. It is in Act II, Scene II page 954, where Macbeth enters with bloody daggers and says looking at his hands, “This is a sorry sight.” As for his wife, she answers him, “A foolish thought, to say a sorry sight.” Even though he knows he will now be king he is not enlightened for he has filled his hands with blood to become king.

Christa Lopez | 24 comments The ongoing tv series "Jane the Virgin" is an American comedy that incorporates classic telenovela drama throughout each episode. One of the plot lines centers around a series of mysterious murders happening in the hotel Marbella in Miami, FL. The murders are suspected to be the doing of a big time drug dealer known only as " Sin Rostro", but nobody knows who he really is as he has been inactive for 5 years. All signs point to the hotel owner as being Sin Rostro, but in the latest episode it is revealed that Sin Rostro is actually a woman; the hotel owners wife Rose. The dramatic irony in this is that the entire time Rose went along with everyone's suspicions about her husband; even saying she feared for her own life. It isn't until she seduces her husband in a construction zone that she buries him alive in cement. Now we know who the mastermind is while the characters remain clueless. In Macbeth an example of dramatic irony is found in Act I scene VI: Duncan- "See, see our honoured hostess! ... Fair and noble hostess, we are your guest tonight. Give me your hand. Conduct me to mine host. We love him highly, and shall continue our graces towards him. By your leave, hostess." King Duncan greets Lady Macbeth with respect and admiration and does not know that just before he arrived she was praying for the strength to kill him. She greets him as a proper hostess, but it is fake because she is plotting his death so that her husband will be king.

Patricia Trejo (patriciasreads) | 13 comments There are several movies with dramatic irony. The audience seems more excited with movies like that because they know more than some of the characters in the movie. The 1998 movie The Parent Trap is an example of dramatic irony. Lindsey Lohan stars in the movie and plays the role of two little girls. The girls are identical twins and were separated at birth by their biological parents. Both girls end up going to summer camp and discover each other for the first time. They plan to go with the opposite parent when camp is over to spend time with them and try to get them back together. The audience knows that the girls went with the opposite parent but the parents don't know. Eventually they find out but, for a while, only the girls and the audience knew what was going on. In Macbeth there are different examples of irony. In Act 1, Scene 6 , Duncan says, "This castle hath a pleasant seat." He feels secure and welcome at the castle not knowing he might get murdered that same night, but the audience knows.

Ricardo Mendez | 63 comments In the series “Breaking Bad”, a good example of dramatic irony is the relationship between the protagonist Walter White who cooks crystal meth and his brother in law Hank who is a DEA agent who is unaware of Walter dealing drugs. Hank asks Walter for help in catching a King Pin drug dealer that he has been close to catching not knowing that his brother in law is in fact the said drug dealer. Macbeth has many examples of dramatic irony. One of these examples is in Act I, Scene I when Lady Macbeth who has schemed to help her husband Macbeth kill the King of Scotland Duncan. The irony is that she is hosting a dinner for the King and his men and is acting honored to be a hostess when she is excited that he is there to have him murdered. The King is unaware of her and Macbeth’s plan and even King Duncan praises her for her hospitality.

Dan and Serena once dated a year or two ago, since then, they have broken up. Both Dan and Serena are now dating someone new, Serena is dating Nate and Dan is dating Vanessa, Jenny comes home from school to find them in bed together; she snaps a photo and sends it to Gossip Girl. Gossip Girl, is a social media that is connected to everyone on the upper eastside where they live, therefore informing everyone of what scandalous things happen. Chuck and Blair are supposed to meet at the empire state building. As Blair is on her way to meet Chuck she in interrupted by her maid whose is in labor, therefore she does not get to meet chuck. Blair calls everyone to the hospital, where Nate, Dan, and Serena all bump heads. Nate starts yelling at both of them he is very upset at the picture of them in bed posted on Gossip Girl. Chuck at this point is feeling rejected and disappointed thinking Blair stood him up. As Jenny walks in his apartment to look for Nate , to tell him it was her who submitted the photo to Gossip Girl, she doesn’t find him and Chuck then invites her to stay and ends up taking her virginity. After Blair is done visiting her made she then sought out to meet Chuck. She meets up with Chuck outside the hospital and explained what happened, Chuck filled with joy and about to propose to Blair then gets blind sided with a blow to the face by Dan. It turns out Jenny had followed Chuck after he left then ends up telling Dan, her brother what had happened, the show ends with Dan chasing after Serena as she heads out to Paris.

In Act 1 scene 7
Macbeth is alone in the castle , he becomes reluctant towards killing Duncan ,his wife lady Macbeth calls him a coward and mocks him. Mac Beth explains that he has changed his mind and he will not proceed with killing Duncan "We will proceed no further in this business" Lady Macbeth then accuses Macbeth of not loving her and becomes very distressed ...Macbeth then goes on to say "if we should fail?"
"Then we fail! But screw your courage to sticking place/and well not fail"' she then convinced Macbeth to proceed with killing Duncan.

Good afternoon Arlette, I can definitley see your point in your example of the boyfriend and girlfriend scenario as a dramatic irony technique. More elaboratley if you had given details of how the audience knows he is cheating, just because they might not understand. All in all, good examples. It's easier for an audience to relate when it's an example of something that has or could happen to them.

We all know the apple is poisoned but innocent snow white doesn’t know and takes a bite. In Macbeth you see how Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are both planning to kill the King and the king thinks of macbeth as a great warrior and noble man . Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth to act innocent and be like a serpent and attack him in order to take his place.
Act 1 Scene 2 line 73 Duncan
What he hath lost noble Macbeth hath won.

Act 1 Scene 5 line 57- 63 Lady Macbeth
Your face my thane, is a book where men
May read strange matters. To beguile the time,
Look like the time , bear welcome in your eye,
Your hand, and your tongue. Look like th’ innocent flower.
But be the serpent under’t. He that’s coming
Must be provided for; and you shall put
This night’s great business into my dispatch.

Hey, Gilbert. Both of your examples are so great! In your example for The Walking Dead, it's interesting that this character Gareth is so confident in his ill intentions only to have them backfire on him. Hey Perla, although I've never seen the movie Snow White, I can agree with your example of dramatic irony. We know the apple is poisonous, but Snow White doesn't. Erick Adrian Lopez | 55 comments I see dramatic irony as something that only happens on stories, it does not really happens on real life. Dramatic irony can be seen on Mexican novel, as they are based on it. There is always a unknown related person of the main character that decides to appear when least expected. It can be either a lost parent, brother, sister or a dog. Yes, even a dog. Irony has goon to far on Mexican novels that is hard to really get it to the story. Anything could be expected on Mexican novels that I wouldn’t be impress if the dog actually the villain and killed a distant cousin o of characters sisters best friend. Irony on novels is also being taken too far. Let’s say that our main character main objective is to defeat or overcome his nemesis and when the clash between these two character arrive guess what ? the main character find out that his rival is actually his brother. Really?

On Macbeth Story, irony takes place when Macbeth is introduced on the act II scene II on. Macbeth is being described as a “Brave” man, He is being presented as very strong and fearless soldier, but as the story goes we find out that in reality, he is weak person. Why? We see on the scene I scene III that he his being manipulated by the witches and later on by his wife on act I, scene VII to kill his king.It seem that our main character his being manipulated by everyone, he always need guidance. Even by his king, as has extreme obeisance for him. Macbeth may be physically a strong and powerful man, but emotionally and mentally he is a weak person

I've never seen the movie Stepfather. Im gonna check it out. I don't understand how Lady Macbeth telling Macbeth that King Duncan isn't gonna see the next day is dramatic irony. Could you please explain?

I can understand why the show is called gossip girl. It's very had to keep up with all of it. I'm not sure if I understand Dramatic Irony but the example you gave doesn't seem like it to me. Can you please explain why it is dramatic irony?

Yadira, the movie Shrek was a perfect example to help me understand what dramatic irony was, it was also interesting how you noticed the scenery in this scene of Macbeth was ironic itself portraying the complete opposite of what was to come.

Yes, Janet I agree with your example of gossip girl. It is a great example of dramatic irony because even though some of the characters don’t know completely what is going on or who posted the photo in the gossip girl website the audience watching the show do know everything that is going on. Although to me you did not gave a good example of a dramatic irony. The act and scene you put as an example from the play Macbeth is too obvious we all know what is going on in this scene even the characters. I think it would have been better if you would had put something about Macbeth and Lady Macbeth pretending they didn’t know who kill the king after they found him dead.

Is is really dramatic that the king his being betrayed by his most loyal soldier Macbeth. Ambition just took all his loyalty for his king. Perhaps from these story comes the idea to never trust someone. not even your own shadow.

Macbeth is totally controlled by ambition, it seem that being the general of an entire army is not enough for him. he want to be even more powerful. As we know, he hes loyal to the king at first, but when the idea of him being the king is implanted on his head, he changes role. instead him being the hero , he now is the bad guy. king Duncan should have been aware that ambition (being a human thing) can take control of everyone at some point.
