“Did you get him?” A hoarse whispered said. The others nodded and he began the chant. When then he stepped to the basin in front of the altar and spoke. “Fire” he whispered
The other followed with water, earth, air, ice, shadows, light, metal, animals, energy, emotion, undead, space and weather. They all gave their power to this spell that would result in profit thousands of years later.
The last one to go as an ancient man. He had the most power yet his mind was addled and he couldn’t think clearlu. So, when the others roused him up and told him to say his part, he incoherently mumbled “Pancakes”
The first man was livid. “You can’t have that! They need to powerful to help defeat-“ but it was too late. The spell had been completed and there was nothing he could do about it anymore.
The Water girl tried to calm him down but as she did so, she and the old man accidently brushed the basin. No one noticed but it would prove to be important later on.

60,000 years later, a group of children with the blessed abilities given to them at birth were grouped in one large house. They’d had their symbols on their arms when they were born. This was their first time meeting each other…
Amora walked in fidgeting. She was the first one here and because of this everything was bare. She chose a seat at the front of the table and it wasn’t long before someone else came in. A boy with white hair, white skin and ice blue eyes stared her down with a calm, cool attitude. “Winter” he said to Amora. Amora nodded. He had the Ice pin on him and Amora wished she didn’t have such a lame power. She was the Pancakes girl. She literally had the most useless power on earth.
“Amora” she said. She was about to try and keep the conversation going when a bang resonated. A girl with hair the color of rich dirt, warm brown skin, green eyes and a pink flower in her hair appeared.
“Flora” she said smiling. “I’m the Earth! What’s your name?”
As Winter introduced himself, more and more people came in. Amora felt more and more embarrassed as people introduced their amazing powers. Then, a man with copper hair walked in and everyone settled down. “As you all know” he began. “The world does not know about your powers and you cannot tell them. We don’t know how you got it but the fact of the matter is we need all of you to reclaim your pins. The next part we’ll discuss when you come back.”
Amora understood. Pins were a lost relic that would amplify their powers. She’d learned that from reading the ancient scrolls but anything else had been lost. “We’ll be training you so you can be ready to get your pins” he continued. “Until then, practice your power.”
It was all very vague but Amora couldn’t ask questions because she knew she wouldn’t be getting an answer. From her research, Amora knew that they had powers despite being human. An ancient ritual had been made giving them their powers but she knew nothing else. “Helloooooooo?” a cheery voice called.
A girl with blonde hair that fell to her knees, fair glowing skin, and bright orange eyes was talking. “I’m Helia!” she said as she began the introductions. “I’m Light, as you can see” she said. “I look forward to meeting all of you!” Helia seemed like a nice person though Amora didn’t know how some people could be so social.
Everyone introduced themselves until it was only Amora left. “I’m Amora.” She said hesitantly. “I’m Pancakes” the Undead boy snorted and Amora felt her face flush. She wasn’t mad though. The boy had every reason to laugh. She had a silly power. Afterwards, everyone headed to their rooms but Helia stayed behind.
“Damien was so rude!” Helia said. It took Amora a second to realize it was the Undead boy she was talking about.
“It’s fine” Amora said quickly. “Pancakes isn’t that impressive.” Amora was just like this. Believing the best in everyone.
“You can’t just laugh at people though!” Helia said as the two girls headed up the stairs. Everywhere there were kids, no younger than 13 no older than 16, chatting. Some were demonstrating their powers while some where on the side laughing.
“It’s fine” Amora insisted. A boy waved the two of them over. Amora produced a pancake to eat since she was hungry and hadn’t eaten breakfast.
“Hey!” the boy said. His hair was a gray or silver color and his body had a hint of it to. The special thing was that his hair was shiny. It wasn’t oily like he hadn’t washed it but it was literally giving a metallic feel. This made guessing who he was a lot easier. Also the fact he was wearing the Metal pin. These pins weren’t the powerful ones they needed to find. They just helped identify everyone. “Ferrum” he said and then pointed to a boy.
He was clearly Fire. He had a powerful red hair with red-orange eyes. They weren’t demonic but simply fire. He had a powerful stance and posture that demanded attention. “That’s Admani” Helia said. “I know” she said grinning. “Sooooo cute right?” Amora shrugged. While Admani was handsome and clearly powerful, Amora wasn’t very attracted to him.
Admani started his performance with fire shooting away from him and proceeded to amaze everyone in the crowd. He called this fire with power, accuracy, precision and so much control. The overwhelming mastery of his elemenant was both awe-inspiring and impressive. After Admani was done, Helia was over the moon. “You have a crush!!” Amora teased Helia.
“So does every other girl” Helia said her face as red as Admani’s hair. It was mostly true. There were a couple of girls who were unaffected but most of them were swooning.
Amora giggled. “You don’t even know him that well.” She said grinng.
Helia blushed, her beautiful face tinged with pink. “Oh be quiet Amora” she said but she had a smirk on her face.
Suddenly, Admani sent all his flames rushing towards Amora. Amora flinched while Helia screamed in fear. Then a wall of water stopped and effectively put out the flames. It came from a boy in the corner. With his black hair and guarded expression, Amora would have guessed that he was the Shadows. It was only when he stepped into the light that she saw his eyes and his clothing. His clothing was blue and he was wearing traditional commoner Chinese clothing which showed where he came from but it was his eyes that gave away he was water. Eyes like the sea, ocean, lake, river, pond, and stream combined. “Who is he?” she asked Helia.
“No idea” Helia whispered back. “He didn’t introduce himself.”
“Flashy tricks?” the boy said. “How plebeian.” He looked coolly at everyone and blinked once. In that blink that water surged up more powerful than anything Admani had done and then vanished.
“What’s your name?” Admani asked. He lit his fire than extinguished it though he had to physical gestures. There were 3 levels of control. Physical, Verbal, and Mental. Everyone except for the boy was on physical.
“Kai” the boy said before vanishing.
“Are you sure he’s not-“ Amora asked Helia.
“Shadows?” Helia finished. “No. That girl, Alynthi, is the Shadows.” She pointed but before Amora could look, Admani distracted them again by showing more tricks. It was clear that even though he was weaker than Kai, he was a lot more popular.
Amora just sat at the counter and ate her pancakes. Helia ended up asking for some so Amora obliged. She was grateful for Helia for not judging her by her power. “This is so good” Helia said devoring her plate. Amora was more interested in the people preforming. Technically they were supposed to be unpacking but she guessed more people were interested in this. Kai excluded.
Winter was next. Ice shards just came everywhere though it was out of control and less powerful than Admani’s. Still, it was amazing. Amora loved the look of so much ice but in a flash it was gone before she could take a picture. Gentle snow started falling down and Amora wanted to catch the snowflakes on her tongue but figured it was too immature. Then it was gone as fast as the icicles.
Then the copper haired man came in again. “That’s General White” Helia said pointing to him.
General White was mad. “This place is for relaxation not for a talent show! You’re supposed to be unpacking-“ An icicle started to form and he stomped on it. “You cannot act like this!”
Amora was intiminated by him and amazed by Winter’s defiant attitude. “Is he always this wound up?” she asked Helia but it was Ferrum who answered.
“Pretty much” Ferrum said grinning. “You didn’t hear him yell at Kai to stop sleeping?” Amora shook her head. Honestly, Amora had trouble staying awake. She had trouble sleeping at night because of nightmares and it had been harder to fall asleep at night.
“Well, he usually yells” Helia said as they watched Winter continuously sprout of icicles. “Don’t think he can talk normally” she added. Slowly, everyone left to their respective rooms. Amora’s room was on the top floor so she had to wait for the elevator. Kai was a floor under her so she had to spend and entire ride with him. He never said anything and spent most of his time reading in some sort of textbook. Amora felt very awkward with him.
At least her room was nice. It was very purple though, like her pin that she needed to reclaim, and Amora wasn’t sure about that. Unlike her other.. wait. What were they called? What was their little group even called? Elementals, Amora decided would suit for now. Unlike her other Elementals, Amora didn’t have 3 or 4 suitcases. She had one. Granted, it was a large one and she’d crammed everything she could in there.
Amora quickly put everything where it belonged. Clothes in the wardrobe, shoes on the shoe rack, hats on the small hooks, toothpaste, toothbrush, and mouth wash all went in the bathroom along with shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion. Amora had brought a lot even if it was in one bag. Finally, everything was put in the right place.
Just then, Helia screamed a floor below her. There were 8 floors, 2 people per each floor. Amora didn’t bother with the elevator and raced down the stairs. Helia was drenched in slimy, sewer water from head to toe. Other people quickly arrived. Some like Damien burst out laughing while others like Admani rushed to help. Amora held back. There was nothing she could do. Adamni evaporated the water while the wind boy blew the disgusting grime away. “What happened?” Winter asked.
“I was walking into Kai’s room to see if he needed help” Helia began.
“Why would you do that?” A girl interrupted. Her hair and eyes were of the deepest darkest black. While Damien had flecks of red for blood and color, this girl was black and black alone. Her skin looked to be fair skinned, but there was so much black mixed in, her skin seemed gray. This Amora remembed was Alynthi, the girl Helia seemed to dislike.
“I wanted to offer help” Helia said. “I just said that” Helia seemed colder around Alynthi which did make sense given the fact they were literally opposites.
“Why would you offer Kai help?” Alynthi clarified. Amora had to agree. Why help someone or even go talk to someone who was clearly in a bad mood? “He’s deranged!”
“He is not deranged.” Flora joined in. Amora wanted to groan. Did they really have to fight? “He’s incridably powerful. You’re just jealous of him.” She said to Alynthi.
Alynthi’s face flushed red in anger. “That is not true” she said hotly. “The only reason you’re defending him is because you have a crush on him!”
“It doesn’t matter why I’m defending him” Flora said also turning red. “It matters on the fact you’re wrong!”
“Why does it matter if I’m wrong or not?” Alynthi shot back.
“Because you think you’re right!” Flora shouted. “You think you’re right when you’re just a jealous person trying to get up some dirt on him!”
“Be quiet!” Amora yelled over everyone. She was as stunned as everyone else was. It had been years since she raised her voice. “Let’s all try to calm down ok?” she asked looking at all of them in turn. “I get that it might be hard but please take into consideration that people can have bad days. We’re all stressed and it would cause us to give bad first impressions” she said in a calmer voice.
Reluctantly, they nodded. “If you’re going to be immature brats, do you mind doing it somewhere else?” a dry voice cut in. Amora wanted to groan. Great. Kai was coming in to break up the peace that was just delicately made. “You didn’t come in, you barged into my room and started putting my things up.” He said looking at Helia who blushed pink. “You need to mind your own business and stop insulting me just because you’re used to being the strongest and the scariest and now, you’re not.” He said coldly to Alynthi. “I appreciate you defending me, but rest assured, I am perfectly capable of defending myself” he had turned to Flora. “I heard her the first time she insulted me. I just didn’t care enough about the words from someone like her to come in.” he left.

“Where are you going?” Amora asked. Everyone else was staring opened mouthed at Kai.
“To the dinning hall” Kai didn’t turn back but he did stop. “It’s dinner time which any of you would know had you been slightly intellectual and read the schedule.” Kai got on the elevator and left. Amora turned red from embarrassment. There was
something about Kai that everything he said could find a way to insult you. No, not insult. It was the blunt honest truth and she disliked him for it.
“Let’s help Helia get changed and then go down” Amora said turning back to everyone. They nodded and a few minutes later, they were heading down to eat. Kai was already seated along with General White and had his nose in a book.
“Sorry we’re late” Admani said. General White nodded though he looked furious at them. The quickly took their seats and to Amora shock, she was sitting next to Kai. She looked around hoping that someone would trade seats with her so she reluctantly sat down. Luckily, she had Helia on her other side.
“Tomorrow” General White said. “You’ll join the IAP.”
“What’s that?” Damien asked. He already had several chunks of meat on his plate.
“Institute for Intellectuals, Academy for the Academically Advanced, and Place for Powers.” Kai said without looking up on from his book. “No one actually goes to the I or A part of the name, that’s just a cover up. It’s where some kids show enough potential to learn the elements. Most can only manage to summon their chosen element. Technically, most fail. Most of the little that pass can only summon.” Kai clarified.
Amora took a small pastry. The only upside of being the Pancakes was that she could eat sugar without gaining weight. “I don’t need your help explaining.” General White said tesitily.
“I wasn’t offering help to you. I was answering a question Damien had” Kai said without even bothering to let General White finish.
“I was also subtly reminding you that while you hold the position of authority, the position of power doesn’t.”
General White turned as red as Admani’s hair. “As Kai said,” he said moving along quickly. “All of you will be attending the Place for Powers. You will join the Place so you can better your powers. Once you develop your powers, the entire group will go to get your pin. Any questions?”
“Yes.” Kai spoke up again. “Is that gluten free?” he pointed to a hunk of bread.
“Yes!” General White exploded. “Any good questions?” he asked through gritted teeth. Amora hid a smile but a small giggle escaped her. Luckily, she was sitting far enough away for General White not to hear her but Kai did. He flashed a smirk which made her confused but she was relieved he wasn’t mad at her.
“Why do we have to take the class?” Flora asked as she ate fruit that she’d produced herself. “Aren’t we stronger than even your best teacher?”
“Yes” General White allowed. “However, this is only because you were born with the spirit of the elements. The teachers have been training much harder and longer so they can help you improve.”
“But they’re weaker than us” Damien clarified.
“How can they teach us anything then?” Winter added on.
Winter was eating every frozen food known to mankind.
“We don’t know” General White said as he struggled to control his temper. “It’s all theoretical. We have some people that will hopefully be able to teach you though.”
“So…” Admani said. “What you’re saying is that you have a school you want us to attend, learn from the teachers there, even though we’re naturally stronger than all of them, hope that they can help us, and expect that it actually does even though the most they can do is summon their chosen elemant?”
“Yes.” General White said through gritted teeth. “That is what I just said.”
“Ok!” Admani said. “Just checking.” He grinned a teasing smile at the General which only made him even more mad. Helia was struggling to control her laughter so hard she was shaking.
Amora felt bad for General White. “When do we start?” she asked hoping to relieve some of the tension.
“Tomorrow” he said and then resumed eating. It took a while for Amora torealize why he was being so cold. Then it hit her. General White didn’t care about her opinion. She was the Pancakes girl and her voice held little matter to him.
Kai noticed it as well. “What time?” he asked his voice both cold and mocking at the same time.
“7:30” General White said. “In the morning. Aim for 7:15 given the fact that most of you were late for dinner tonight.”
“Thanks.” Winter said dryly. “We’ll make sure to have a fight earlier next time.” Amora could tell that the entire group was starting to dislike General White.
“Thank you” General White said in a clipped voice. There was an awkward silence afterwards and it was only broken by a small clink of plates as the food was handed around.
“I’m heading off to bed” Admani said stretching. “Good night”
Amora and the others also headed to bed. Once she was in bed, she lay on a pillow her mother had given to her. Her eyes gently closed as she listened to someone below her play the flute.
She fell asleep and into a nightmare with a monster ready to rip her heart out.

Amora wanted to scream but she couldn’t. Her hands flaied wildly until she woke up. The music was still playing when she scrambled out of bed shacking. A quick check on her watch told her it was 1:00. Amora shuddered. The nightmares were getting worse. She washed her face in her bathroom trying to stop her body from shaking.
Amora knew she wouldn’t be able to go back to sleep. Instead, she decided to go on the roof and find out who was playing the music. It took her a long time to find how to get up there but she found the stairwell eventually. When she got up there, there was a single boy standing there. Amora didn’t recognize him. “Hello?” she asked softly.
The boy stopped playing his music, his silver flute falling from his lips. He had his back towards her and he was wearing a dark cloak. “Who are you?” he asked. His voice sounded like a robot.
“My name’s Amora” Amora said nervously. “What’s your’s?”
“None of your concern” the boy said his voice cold. “What are you doing here?”
“I wanted to find out who was playing the music” Amora said nervously. “That’s all.”
“Now you know” the boy said finally turning. Amora didn’t know who he is but she didn’t think he was hurt her. “Are you going to leave?” he asked twirling his flute like it was a weapon.
“Do you want me to?” Amora asked. She still wasn’t sure if he was hostile or not. “I mean I can” she added on hurridly. She didn’t want to seem rude. “I wasn’t challenging you” she said quickly.
“I can’t control you” the boy said. “You can’t control me. What you do is your choice.”
Amora bit her lip. She wanted to stay and listen to the music better but she didn’t want to stay with someone who didn’t want to be with her. “Do you want to be alone?” she asked changing her question.
“Yes.” The boy said his answer clear, sure, and absolute. “I want to be alone.” Amora nodded though she was slightly sad, she couldn’t blame him.
“Alright then” Amora said quietly. “I think you play really well” she added before she headed down the stairs again. She changed out of her pajamas and into her uniform. Amora knew there was no possible way for her to go down at this time so she decided to jst prepare and then read.
Amora brushed her hair, braided it, and then grabbed a book from her shelf. There was nothing else she could do. It was around 2:30 at this point and she didn’t want to wake anyone up. Still, it didn’t mean Amora wasn’t tired. It’d been a while since she’d slept well. Her hands were still shaking even though she’d had nightmares and it had been an hour.
She closed her eyes for a few moments wishing she could sleep. She heard the gentle music again and opened her eyes only to realize that she had fallen asleep. It was bright outside. She redid her hair, smoothed out her uniform and headed down the elevator. She checked her watch. 6:03. How did she manage to sleep?
When she got down to the dining hall, only Kai, Admani, and Alynthi were there. Alynthi and Admani were in a heated discussion while Kai was throwing food up and catching in his mouth. “Hey!” Admani said as he beckoned her over. Amora smiled gratefully.
“How are you?” she asked grinning. Amora took a small handful of fruit for her breakfast. She usually didn’t eat breakfast but she figured it would be a good idea given the fact today was the first day of school.
“I slept great.” Admani said. “It’s been a while since I’ve woken up so refreshed!”
“I don’t sleep” Alynthi said coolly. “Darkness gives me all the energy I need.” Amora thought that was pretty cool but judging from the raised eyebrow from Kai and the slight shudder from Admani that it wasn’t the normal thing to think.
“I don’t sleep either” Kai said. “I don’t need it.” He didn’t bother elaborating more and the four of them lasped in an awkward silence. That is until, the rest of the Elementals came. Loud and cheerful, the quickly filled the room with their chatter.
“How you doing?” Helia asked eating strands of light again. “I can’t wait for class!” she said excited. Helia’s skin and hair was literally glowing. “I know they’re weaker than us but they’re still pretty strong!” she said bouncing on her feet.
“Yeah” Amora said though with less excitement. Paths were given
to the students based of the student’s desires and soul. What kind of person would want to follow Pancakes when there was fire and water and metals?
“I’m going to relax a little” Admani said standing up. “We still have an hour.” He headed over towards Amora. “Want to come to the music room with me?” he offered.
Amora was surprised but also grateful he was being so kind.
“Yeah” she said eager to take a breather from so many people.
Admani led her to the music room then walked over to the flutes section. Amora’s heart pounded. Was this Admani’s way of telling her he was the boy? No. She shouldn’t make assumptions about other people. Assumptions were rude. “Do you play?” he asked.
“I used to play the piano” Amora said. “I mostly sing now. I have perfect pitch so it makes things easier for me to sing.”
Admani nodded and picked up a flute. This one was a shiny red one. Not just red though. Orange yellow, even hints of blue were on it making it seem like a flame. It wasn’t the silver one. Amora felt disappointed but when Admani played it reminded her of the song at night. Maybe it was him. “Can I hear you sing?” he asked almost shyly. No, not shyly, Admani was not shy. Hesitantly.
“Sure” Amora said reluctantly. It wasn’t that she didn’t liked to sing, she was afraid of Admani looking down at her. He was an amazing flute player. She started to sing and even though she was hesitant at first, her voice steadily got stronger.
When she was done, Admani applauded her and she noticed that Admani’s and her performances had gathered quite the crowed. Ferrum, Damien, Helia, Alynthi, the Space boy, and the Weather girl were all looking at the two of them impressed. All but one. Kai was dully unimpressed and his only comment was. “You’re 432nd note was off pitch. You also forgot to warm up.”
Amora thought back to it, realized he was right, and nodded gratefully. Judging from the other Elemental’s glares they weren’t as appreciative of his comment. “Thanks Kai” she said smiling. Whatever anyone else though, he was right and he had helped her.
Kai looked surprised but then his customary lack of emotion came back. “it’s my duty to help the less talented.” He said before leaving.
“Can you help me in the future?” Amora called.
“As long as you ask” was the reply. Amora smiled. To her, even though Kai was prickly, brutally honest, and scathingly cold, there was still a kind side in him. Everyone had a kind side.
“We need to go” Admani said checking the time. “We don’t want to be late again.”
“General White will throw a baby fit” the Space boy cackled.
“Oh be nice Masofa.” Admani returned good naturadely. “All seriousness though, we should get going.” Murmmers fo agreement rose up and the entire group headed down to meet the General. Today, no one was late except for Kai.
“Where is the boy?” General White thundered.
“Up here you pathetic worm” Kai said in a patronizing voice. “Had you bothered to be productive and look instead of use your voice in a sorry attempt to try and get me to come you would have found out. You’re not impressive and your voice is just sad. The fact that you lose your temper so easily is amusing at most.”
There were a few shared glances and it was clear the others agreed with Kai even if they didn’t exactly like him. Amora didn’t agree with Kai. Even if she did, there was no reason to publically humiliate General White. As Kai leaped down from the ceiling and received a few grins and a couple of high fives, Amora didn’t know how to react. So she didn’t say anything.
As General White led them to their school Amora was struck by the beauty. General White had underspoke their powers. While it was true they could only summon, they could control how their elemants were summoned. Why the 15 Elementals walked in, the room got dead quiet. “it’s them!” a girl squealed and with that the chaos began. The students rushed towards them when bam, they slammed into a wall of buzzing energy.
“My name is Lakas” the boy said. “I don’t know about everyone else, but I am not in the mood to play your idol and your hero. Back off.”
Admani nodded but he still waved to a couple of people causing some of the girls to swoon over him. “What a hearbreaker” Helia whispered to Amora.
“Do you really think so?” Admani asked Helia. Helia turned red while Amora took the question into consideration.
“No” she said finally as their group headed to the front doors, protected by Lakas’s powers.
“Why not?” Admani asked raising an eyebrow.
“I think that they don’t know you to well so if you got into a relationship, they would be less heartbroken and more angry” Amora said. “I don’t think they like you as a person.” She added.
“Hmm.” Was the only answer from Admani that Amora got while Helia pouted at Amora.
“What?” Amora asked softly so not to embarrass Helia.
“I like him” Helia reminded her. “Please stop flirting with him. I know you aren’t doing it intentinionally, but please stop” Flirting? The first thing that came to Amora’s mind was hair twirling and eyelash batting. She’d done neither of those things. So how was the flirting?
Her mind was distracted when she saw the grand front desk. Behind the desk was 14 tubes. It didn’t take Amora long to find out which elemant was missing. No surprise, it was hers. She resisted the urge to cry. They would figure it out. A pretty young girl was stunned by their presence- well all of theirs but Amora probably- and gasped. “Hello ma’am” Admani said as Lakas lowered the energy shield. “Our names are-“
“We’re the 15 Elementals” Kai interrupted. “Doubtless you know our names as you’re the receptionist.”
The girl went from gasping to cold but Kai was even colder so in the end, the girl flinched. “Must you be so mean?” Amora murmured to Kai.
“I have a very low patience for useless things such as an introduction they already know and just want to talk to us.” Kai replied without looking at her.
“It can’t hurt to talk to them.” Amora pointed out.
“It can if they think that we’re stupid for not noticing and think they’re smart in tricking us to talking to them.” Kai responded without a hint of hesitation and Amora felt doubt sliding in. What if Kai was right?
“Fair enough” she said quietly. As she looked up, Admani was beckoning for her to come over.
“I’m so sorry” the girl said in a simpering voice. “We don’t have anyone currently following the Path of Pancakes so I’m afraid we don’t have a teacher for you. You can take a different Path though”
Amora heard Kai muttering to Winter behind her. “I’m hoping she’s not taking the Path of Water.” He muttered.
“Or the Path of Ice” Winter agreed. “She’s horrendous and devious. Entitled and arrogant too.”
Amora felt her face turn red. She was certain that Winter and Kai were talking about her. “I’ll take the Path of Fire. I get it’s a popular path so if necessary, I can take Light too.” She tuned the two boys out and focused on the friends she did have.
“Take Light.” The girl said her smiling never leaving her face.
“Alrig-“ Amora began but then Admani interrupted her.
“She can take Path of Fire.” Admani said. “I’ll help teach her.” As he smiled at her, Amora remembered what Helia said. She should distance herself from Admani.
“It’s fine” Amora said. “Besides, I want to hang out more with Helia anyway” she said trying to make it sound like nothing.
It worked. “Alright” Admani said with a slight grin. “Can I sit with both of you at lunch?” Amora nodded relieved. She hadn’t wanted to be alone.
Quickly, everyone split up into their Paths. Helia had been delighted to hear Amora was learning with her. “Let’s go!” she trilled.

Amora followed her friend into the tube her heart pounding. Without hesitating she buckled herself into the seat and closed the door. Instantly, the seat sank so fast Amora couldn’t even speak. Withing seconds, she’d arrived at the meeting place for the Path of Light. “Welcome” a man with radiant light blonde hair said. “Are you Helia?”
Amora’s face turned red. “No” she said quietly.
“I’m Helia” Helia said. Her hair and skin matched the man’s making his seem dim. “She’s Amora and she’s taking Path of Light with me.”
The man nodded woodenly. Amora could tell he didn’t think much of her and resolved to show him what she could do. During class, while Helia looked bored, Amora took the notes. It paid off afterwards when Amora tried her first practical class. “Light needs a friend.” Helia said. “Just be their friend and eventually you’ll be able to control it.”
Amora didn’t know why but controlling the Light was as easy as Pancakes. “Is it always this easy?” she asked as effortlessly controlled the Light while the intructors and other students stared in awe.
“Not really.” Helia said amazed. “You’re taking just as long as I was and my specialty is the Light. Maybe it’s because you’re an Elemental?”
Amora was just grateful for this. Maybe people would stop being so snide to her now. During lunch, Admani joined them along with most of the Elementals. Most because Kai was sitting by himself with a dome of water surrounding him. “He’s soooo rude.” A girl said sliding up to Amani, Helia and Amora. Her uniform showed she’d taken the Path of Fire.
“Kai?” Helia asked. The girl nodded.
“I brought him food and then he didn’t even take it!” the girl said. “He just shoved it in my face.”
“Because you were being a suck up and trying to introduce yourself subtly. It was neither subtly nor clever and I despise people like you who are self entitled, stupid, and delusional.” Kai said loudly. The girl’s face turned red as people started to snicker. She left.
“Thank heavens” Admani said rubbing his eyes. “I really hate to agree with Kai but seriously, people need to leave us alone. We’re not stupid enough to befriend a random stranger with food. Especially if the force it in our faces like in Kai’s case.”
Amora nodded but she didn’t really know how to feel as she remembered the words Winter and Kai said. Still, she didn’t think Kai was the type of person to say that about her. Kai was nice. Though from what she heard earlier, Kai was mad at her. Maybe that was because she’d scolded him? She was stuck in her thoughts until Admani snapped his fingers in front of her face.
“Yes?” she asked apologetically.
“Helia was telling me how you mastered Light” Admani said. “Can you show me?” Amora nodded and snapped her fingers. Gentle strands of Light appeared and Admani looked in awe. “You should teach me!” he said smiling.
“I’m still learning.” Amora said wanting to perfect the Light first. If she could get it done, people would stop treating her like she was less than anyone else. “Helia can show you though.” Admani turned to playfully pestering Helia to show her how.
Amora sighed softly. Was this why Kai preferred to be alone? So he could have the environment to his liking? She honestly didn’t know why he would say that about her and pondered briefly about asking him but then decided not to. She shouldn’t ask him when he was in a bad mood. Never tickle a sleeping dragon.
Especially if this particular dragon was mad at her. However, to Amora surprise, Kai ended up coming to her. “Amora.” Kai said flatly. “Come on.”
Amora didn’t know what was going on but she also didn’t want to be rude and didn’t know how to say no, so she followed him. “Yeah?” she asked once they were out of earshot of everyone.
“You need to be careful.” Kai said bluntly. “I understand that in you’re nature, you assume the best of others but once people realize you have two abilities, they’ll flock you. You need to be cautious of their real intentions.”
Amora nodded though she didn’t know what they were talking about. “Amora!” Admani shouted. “Get over here before Helia eats all the cupcakes!”
“Noo!” Helia called over him. “Stay there, I will devour the tray!” their yelling turned into inaudible yelling as peals of laughter came from the two of them.
“I’m being serious Amora” Kai said his voice sharper than ever. The hint of gentleness from his voice was gone from his voice. “You need to know their real intentions.”
Amora nodded again, this time understanding what he was saying. “I will.” She said gently. “Promise”
Kai nodded though Amora was sure that they would go back to this topic. Amora ran off to her friends and by the time she’d remembered she needed to ask Kai if he was mad at her but he was gone. Amora left Helia and Admani to their cupcake fight and decided to find Winter. “Hey Winter?” Amora asked softly.
“Yeah?” Winter asked. Winter seemed to know what she wanted to instantly he led her to a nearby clearing where it was empty.
“Why do you think I’m devious, horrendous, entitled and arrogant?” Amora asked the question blurting out of her mouth. She winced. Was that too rude?
“When did I ever say that?” Winter aske clearly confused. Amora knew most people would think that they were faking it but she was ginuenly confused. Had she misheard?
“When we were talking to the recitionist” Amora said wanting the ground to swallow her up.
“Oh that!” Winter said sheepishly and Amora braced herself for his excuse. “We weren’t talking about you. We were talking about the receptionist.”
Oh. Well now Amora felt stupid. “You can’t say that about anyone though” she pointed out trying to distract Winter’s attention from her clearly red face.
“Fair enough” Winter said snickering. Amora turned an even darker shade of red. “It’s fine” he promised. “I’m glad you confronted me about me. Never lose this part of you.” Amora nodded and watched him walk over to his friends.
Amora felt embarrassed that she’ done something so rash and scolded another person. At the same time though, she was relived they weren’t talking about her. She wasn’t given the time to think about more though as General White appeared and guided them back to their house.
“Want to go to the Shooting Range?” Admani asked Helia. Helia nodded eagerly.
“Can I come too?” Winter asked grinning and punching Admani’s arm. “You can’t keep the Shooting Range to yourself.”
Admani pretended to think about it. “Fine..” he said teasingly. “I guess we’ll have to deal with your presence.”
“I’m coming to!” Flora said. “I can’t turn up a chance to beat Winter.”
“When have you ever beat me?”
“Loads, think of our seasonal fight.”
“Nooooo. I won that one.”
Ferrum rolled his eyes. “Break it up you two” he said teasingly. “I’m coming to. “ he added. “I’ve been wanting to try out target practice” he said grinning.
“If Ferrum’s going, I am too.” Masofa added. “I’m going to beat him up so bad.’
Ferrum rolled his eyes. “Only if you cheat” he pointed out.
One by one by one all the Elementals joined in. Chiming, bickering, and arguing, one would have never guessed that they’d just met a day before. Even Kai joined in from a friendly call from Winter, Flora, and Masofa. Then, they all turned their heads towards Amora. “Coming?” Helia asked eagerly, ready to go to the Shooting Range.
Amora didn’t want to. This was around the time where she called her dad. Her mother had died a few months back. She wasn’t close with her father like she was with her mother but it didn’t mean he didn’t love her and she didn’t love him. She wanted to call im or he would be worried. “I can’t.” she said finally wanting to sink into the floor.
After everyone starting leaving, Amora raced to her room. She nearly collapsed before her doorway. Taking a few moments to gather herself, she took a few breaths. She couldn’t face her dad like a mess. He was always slightly over protective so he would panic. When she opened the door, her room was a mess. Someone had been here.

Amora bit back a scream of terror. Shakily, the first thing she did was to call her dad. She gave him the glossed over version knowing that if he found out she clmbed to the roof, talked to a random stranger there, and that someone had gotten into her apartment, he would bring her right back home.
Once she hung up, her hands wouldn’t stop shaking. Someone had been in her room, but how? All of sudden, she felt a sudden calmness. It was fine. There was nothing too wrong about it. She shook her head trying to clear her mind but the calmness was so alluring she found herself gently agreeing with it. Then her door burst open. It was Helia. “Amora!” she said looking around the room. “You’re room’s the same.”
“it’s fine” Amora said as if in a trance. “Nothing’s too wrong about it.”
Helia shook Amora but nothing happened. Sighing, she dragged Amora to elevator and to the bottom floor where everyone was waiting. “Her room is the same.” Helia said. “She’s also gone kinda crazy.”
Amora didn’t hear Helia clearly. “My room is fine” she repeated like a parrot. “There’s nothing wrong with it.”
“I can help.” A boy with shimmery white hair the glistened like it was underwater spoke up. His hair was shimmering with different shades of light transparent colors. “I can calm her emotions” he explained.
As soon he put his hands on her shoulders, Amora felt her mind clear. She shook her head like a wet dog trying to make sure her mind was in control again and then shivered though it wasn’t cold. The feeling of irrational calmness unnerved her and she disliked it. “Thank you.”
“Is she alright Mirka?” Admani asked nervously.
The boy nodded. “She’ll have hints of trauma but otherwise, she’ll be fine.” Mirka checked Amora’s feelings one last time and nodded again. “She’s good. We should go check her room for any
traps that she could have activated in there.”
“I was in there for a while before the weirdness happened.” Amora said as Admani guided her to the couch. “I’m fine now” she insisited. “Ow!” she felt a pain on her shoulder. When she looked behind her, Kai was there. “What was that for?” she asked.
Kai held up a minicule dart. “I’m guessing you got pricked by this earlier and it took a while for it to settle,” he said. He didn’t say anything else but it was clear Kai was thinking about other things.
“Then we need to look for whatever might have sprung that.” Mirka decided. Admani nodded. “Who’s going?” he asked.
As one, everyone either shouted me or I am. Admani sighed. “We can’t all go!” he said to them.
“I’m going.” Kai said with authority. “Helia should stay to look over Amora. Mirka should too monitor her emotions. Winter will need to help treat the prick and Flora can help making the balm to heal it.”
“We don’t know if you’re going” Admani said. “That does clear off a couple people though. “
“We should ask Amora who should go because she might not be comfortable with some people looking through her room.” Kai countered and both boys turned to Amora. Amora started to sweat anxiously.
“She’s feeling nervous.” Mirka said. Amora looked at him and he smirked. “Just monitoring your emotions.” He said. Amora reluctantly grinned back.
“I can go check.” Amora said softly. “I have a lot of personal stuff there I would prefer no one look through.” A question occurred to her. “Why aren’t you guys at the Shooting Range?”
“We heard multiple crashes upstairs” Helia explained. “We weren’t sure what they were so-“
Ferrum picked up the story “We decided to come check. All our rooms are the same but you also-“
“I know” Amora said embarrassed remembering the way she acted. “I know.” She repeated hoping they would drop it which they did. “Thanks Mirka” she repeated.
Mirka grinned. “No problem” he said crashing next to her on the couch. “Still” he said in a more serious voice. “Are you sure you’re alright? No traces?”
Amora offered up her wrist. “You’re the Emotions. You tell me” she said. Amora didn’t really know if she was perfectly fine. She had to be sure the feeling was gone.
Mirka grabbed her wrist and closed his eyes in concentration. “You have a little trace that’ll fade with time like a scab.” He said finally. “That’s it” Amora nodded relieved. A little trace. She could deal with that.
Admani sighed in relief and the others did too. Kai however just looked stonefaced to the point where Amora was afraid that he was angry at her. “Let’s go check your room.” Was all Kai said. Amora, Mirka, Kai, Admani, Helia, Winter and Flora all headed upstairs. When they go to her room though, they couldn’t fin anything. Flora used her power to clean everything up and Kai said in the corner thinking. Amora kept one finger on Mirka’s wrist because of two reasons. One, they needed him to check her feelings and two, she didn’t want to make things weird by holding his hand.
When they got downstairs Mirka finally spoke. “I think I knew who prepared it.” He said finally. Instantly, everyone’s attention was on him. “General White.” He said.
“It does make sense” Ferrum said slowly. “He was here when we weren’t.”
“Why though?” Admani asked. “Amora’s the only one who tolerates him. Why would he hurt her?”
“We can as him ourselves if we catch him” Mirka said. “Unless it was one of the servants.” He added thoughtfully.
“It can’t be the servants” Helia said. “They don’t have the power levels to be allowed in our rooms. Only us and-“
“General White” Winter said slowly.
“What was he looking for?” Flora asked confused. Amora agreed that bit didn’t fit. Why would he only booby trap hers?
“Maybe it was some from school that pricked her?” Admani suggested. “She was around a lot of people though.”
“My shield protected us though.” Lakas argued. “Helia was with Amora all the time.”
“Then who was it?” Amora asked frustrated.
“One thing’s for sure” Kai said slowly. “No one can go in that room. They could hve rigged something else.”
“No!” Amora shouted. She had to get her pillow and her blanket from that room. It was the only things of her mother she’d brought. “No!” she repeated.
Amora made move to go upstairs and get her pillow but Kai stopped her easily. She looked at Helia and Ferrum for help but they just turned away. Flora, Winter, Masofa, Alynthi, Lakas, Damien, even Admani wouldn’t look her in the eye. They all agreed with Kai. In a final move of desperation, she turned to Mirka. He flinched. “Just let her Kai” he said finally. “If anything, I can go get it.” Without waiting for Kai to say anything, Mirka left and came back with her clothes and bathroom related items. On the second trip, he brought the pillow and the blanket.
Amora rushed past Kai to meet Mirka tears of gratitude welling up. “Thank you” she whispered. She clutched the pillow and the blanket hard. Amora would have hugge Mirka, but worried that the two of them didn’t know each other that well.
“You want to stay with me?” Helia asked hugging her gently. Amora nodded. Helia called the Light to carry all her things to Helia’s room.
Amora stumbled after Helia. She didn’t want to burden her anymore than she had to. “Thanks” she whispered to Helia once they were in the elevator.
“Of course” Helia said. “Kai can be such a prick. It’s a good thing Mirka was there” Amora nodded woodenly, a gentle feeling of betrayal settling in her. It was a strange feeling. Hurt, anger, and sadness all at once. She’d never felt it before. Amora assumed it was based off how Kai had acted. Helia was right. It was a good thing Mirka had been there. Otherwise she would have never gotten her things back.
Helia’s room was a gentle white and yellow combo. It wasn’t overwhelmingly bright like she’d expected. Instead there was a gentle soft feeling that came with sunshine. “It’s amazing!” Amora said looking around. While her room hadn’t captured her
element, Helia’s room did. It was increidible.
“Thanks” Helia said. She put Amora’s blanket and pillow of half of the huge bed and then used Light to put everything else in its place. “It’s almost dinner time anyway” she said shrugging. Helia grabbed an outfit and changed into it. Seeing Helia wearing something that suited her and her element made Amora slightly envious. Helia was lucky to have an element like Light.
Amora shook the thought out of her head. She was lucky to have Helia as a friend. Amora changed into an outfit that was completely normal- for human standards. A pair of jeans, a clean white flowing shirt and a brown leather jacket. Helia gave her a thumbs up and then went back in to use the toilet. As Amora waited for Helia, she hugged her pillow. She’d been so close to losing it. Her mother had designed it for her on her birthday. She traced the words on the pillow. I know I can’t be with you for the rest of your life but I can promise to love your for the rest of mine. Amora forced herself not to cry as she always felt the urge when she thought of her mother.
Luckily Helia came up and served the perfect distraction. “Let’s go!” she said. Helia’s head was adorned by a diadem that was woven from sunlight.
Amora nodded. When they got there everyone was sitting down and looking very nervous around General White who was clearly confused. “Hello Helia" he greeted warmly. “Amora you as well.” He said as an afterthought. Amora was just happy he remembered her. “
“Hello!” she said brightly before remembering what he’d done before. Her face never stopped smiling but her feelings wilted a little. Amora sat between Mirka and Alynthi, the former giving her a comforting squeeze while the later ignored her.
“How you doing?” Mirka whispered softly. Amora shrugged. Growing up, she’d never felt anything but positive emotions. She didn’t know why. The closest she’d ever come to a negative emotion was the envy she’d felt from Helia.
“Tired” she said instead of saying all of her thoughts. It was her default answer when she didn’t have a good response. Mirka squeezed her hand and Amora remembered he could sense her feelings. She didn’t have to say them for him to understand.
“Thanks” she whispered softly then both of them turned their attention towards the table.
Everyone was looking at them. Even the servants were openly staring. General White coughed. “Now” he said. Everyone’s attention shifted back to him. Amora silently thanked him. She knew she was suppose to be mad at him but she was grateful that the attention was gone from her. “How was your day at school?” he asked pleasantly.
“Boring” Kai said flatly. “The people there were incompetent. I could do more when I was an infant.”
“They actually weren’t that bad” Admani said. “I know they couldn’t control the Element but they could control their summoning and where they were summoned so that was impressive.”
“Because a group of students our age doing things you guys could do at toddler and worse than me at infant isn’t that bad” Kai said rolling his eyes.
Admani didn’t say anything but Amora could tell there was more Admani wanted to say. She knew from experience though that even though you didn’t like it, Kai custamary bluntness was true.
“Amora took the Path of Light” Helia said brightly. “She’s already mastered it!”
General White made a sound of interest and the other Elementals turned to look at her. “That’s quite impressive Amora” General White said.
“Thank you” Amora said happily. She wasn’t proud of her accomplishment- she never was- but she was happy that she’d manage to pul the feat off. She wasn’t sure how or why it was so easy but if it hadn’t been, it would have been a lot harder to earn respect.
“Are you going to take Metal tomorrow?” Ferrum asked eagerly. The Air girl frowned but he didn’t notice.
“Sure” Amora said brightly.

“I can teach both of you” Ferrum said running a hand through his metallic hair. “It’ll be fine Gale” he said when she pouted. “I promise.”
Gale relented grinning. “Alright then” she said flicking her hand. A gentle wave of wind crashed into Ferrum who only smirked.
“I’ll get you back for that” he promised. Gale only rolled her eyes. Amora smiled happy that the tension from earlier was gone. Everything seemed to have gone back to normal as the familiar chattering continued.
When dinner was finished, Amora walked into the elevator. She almost pushed her old floor button but remembered at the last second and pushed Helia’s and Kai’s floor. Once she got there, it was quiet. Amora had left everyone earlier so for the first time since she’d arrived, she had a small bit of peace. Amora waite for Helia to come up and then both of them headed to bed.
Amora woke up at 1:52. She heard the soft melodic sound of the flute. Amora didn’t know if she should go up there or not since the last time the boy had wanted to be alone. She decided to risk it and slowly headed upstairs. It took her a lot less time this time around and she got to the roof without breaking a sweat. “Hello?” she asked cautiously.
“What are you doing here?” A voice said. It wasn’t cold, instead it was emotionless. The boy was standing right above her. Amora barely managed to conceal her scream.
“Please don’t do that” she said taking in deep breaths to calm herself.
“Do what?” the boy asked seeming genuinely confused.
“Sneak up on me like that” Amora responded, her heart still pounding.
“Yet you come up here when I said I wanted to be alone. In a way you were sneaking up on me.” He pointed out.
Amora smiled sheepishly. “I just wanted to hear the music” she admitted. “Music in general sounds better up close.”
The boy shrugged. “As long as you don’t talk to me.” Amora wanted ask if he was Admani. It would make sense why he was treating her so cold. Plus Admani had literally showed her a flute this morning.
“What’s your name?” Amora asked completely ignoring the fact she wasn’t supposed to be talking.
Admani, at least she thought it was him, grinned. “I’m not saying” he grinned. “Just think of me as Flute Boy. Besides, I told you yesterday, none of your concern”
Amora shrugged. Flute Boy lifted his silver flute to his lips and played. Instead of peaceful, this melody was saddening. Betrayal and anger swirled in the song. Amora shuddered as he played but there was something undeinably sweet in the music that she couldn’t place. “What song is that?” she asked once he was done.
Flute Boy grinned. “Life” he said. Amora shook her head. While it was true life was sad, and had betrayal and anger, the proportions were wrong. There was way more sweet things in the world than this. “You don’t think so?” he asked. Amora shook her head. Flute boy rolled his eyes and sighed.
He snapped his fingers and gentle strands of Light appeared. Amora looked up at him amazed. “How?” she asked. Helia was the Light person. Flute Boy manipulated the light which left Amora in even more awe. “How?” she repeated.
“The same reason you can” he said without any emotion.
“I don’t know why I can” Amora said desperately. “All I can think of is because I’m an Elemental!”
The boy just looked at her. “I don’t want to talk about it then” he said. He lifted his flute to his lips and Amora fell asleep.
Amora woke up in her bed. Technically it was Helia’s bed but Amora didn’t bother with the fact. Her mind was still amazed she managed to sleep 2 days without nightmares. Helia was still asleep so Amora crept downstairs. To her surprise, Mirka, Kai, Alynthi, and Gale were already awake. “Hey” Amora said softly.
Mirka looked up, his face splitting into a smile. “Amora!” he said beckoning her like Admani had yesterday morning. “How are you?” he asked as she sat down and chose an omelet.
“Pretty good” Amora said. “If you don’t believe me you can check” she offered holding out her wrists. Mirka pushed it down gently.
“I trust you” he whispered. “If you say something I’ll believe it.”
“Thanks” Amora said. It’d been a long time since anyone had believed her or in her. Amora wasn’t the smartest or the prettiest or the most talented. She was the kindest but kindness rarely got you anywhere in life. It was nice to hear Mirka say he believed her.
Amora turned her attention back to the table. “Who keeps making a racket during the nightime?” Alynthi was asking Gale. “I can’t focus!”
“It’s not that bad” Gale said soothingly. “I think it’s pretty good. It is distracting though.”
Amora felt like she should speak up for Flute Boy’s sake. “He plays wonderful music” she protested. “It’s very comforting to hear and it’s nice to listen to!”
“Those two reasons mean the exact same thing” Kai pointed out dryly. “I find it tolerant at best. They could at least do it in the music room with the sound proof walls”
“How do you know it’s a he?” Gale asked Amora. “Do you know who he is?”
Amora scolded herself she shouldn’t have been so careless. “I met him” she admitted. “I don’t know who he is though.”
“If you meet him again can you ask him to be quieter?” Alynthi asked.
Amora nodded. “Of course” she said earnestly. She didn’t mention the fact that Flute Boy probably wouldn’t listen to her.
“Better yet” Gale said. “Bring us to meet him” Her phone dinged with a messge. “I have to meet Ferrum outside” she said standing up. Gale was wearing a silky white dress that rippled in noexistince wind and she looked really pretty in it.
“We have school” Kai pointed out. “In like a few minutes.”
“Ferrum and I are skipping” Gale said.
“You like him” Mirka said grinning. Gale’s face flushed pink. “I can tell from your emotions”
“We’re literally dating” Gale said flatly. “I’ve known him since I was 3.”
“Fair enough” Mirka said wiggling his fingers. Gale stuck her tongue out at him and left. As soon as she left, Mirka let out a howl of laughter.
Alynthi cackled. “That was good” she laughed. “She was so red.”
Mirka grinned and even Kai scowl lessened. “Do you guys not like her?” Amora asked cautiously.
“Ew no” Alynthi said. “She’s so rude. She’s also very-“ here Alynthi paused “ Let’s just say we’ve met before and I like Helia more than I like Gale.”
Amora frowned. Out of all the people here, Ferrum was probably in the top two, right after Helia. It seemed strange someone as nice as he was would date someone as bad as Gale. “I think she isn’t that bad” she defended Gale.
“Oh you poor naïve little girl” Alynthi said rolling her eyes. “Just you wait.”
“Wait for what?” everyone else had arrived. The speaker was Helia.
“For Amora to realize what kind of person Gale is” Alynthi said. Helia didn’t say anything but she pursed her lips.
“She’s not that bad” the Weather girl spoke up. “She’s pretty nice honestly.”
“To each their own” Kai said effectively stopping another argument. From Amora’s point of view it was about 75-25 with most of them agreeing with Alynthi. She wondered what Gale could have done to get so many people against her.
However, all thoughts were blown away when General White came stumbling in covered in blood.
